Healing After Loss: Daily Meditations for Working Through Grief
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
鶹
After the loss of a loved one, once the services are over and the relatives and friends have gone home, we are left to enter a strange new land, where someone who has given meaning to our life is gone. Drawing on her own experience as well as that of others, author Martha Whitmore Hickman presents a year's worth of meditations for people dealing with this profound loss, offering solace and illuminating a way forward. From January 1 to December 31, each day's meditation considers a meaningful quotation or passage on grief or suffering, with sources ranging Shakespeare to Emily Dickinson, from the Christian Bible to Hindu proverbs. A thoughtful, sensitive collection, Healing After Loss will comfort and inspire listeners on their journeys through grief toward recovery.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 9, 2025Verified PurchaseI bought this book before I needed it, knowing that when I needed it, I probably wouldn’t be able to figure out how to help myself.
My mom passed a few weeks ago. I didn’t pick up the book till a few weeks after but it really has made a difference. It’s not preachy at all. The meditations are gentle and helpful, and reflective of one’s everyday thoughts. The pages are marked with a date for everyday of the year, but I just started reading from the beginning, whatever I could get through on a day by day basis. Highly recommended for anyone having trouble dealing with the overwhelming grief from the loss of a loved one.

- Reviewed in Canada on February 25, 2025Verified PurchaseI recently lost my husband and was being consumed by my grief. I did not know if this was normal and I did not want to take any medication for grief and depression. This book has been a God send. It is helping me cope and accept grief and leading me to deeper understanding and healing.

- Reviewed in Canada on March 14, 2024Verified PurchaseI lost my wife just over a month ago… this was recommended by the bereavement counsellor. I started reading a week after she passed… from day 1 I found this book very helpful. Each passage presented each day seamed to fit the progress or day I was having. This daily read has helped me in the early days of my grief and I have bought an other copy for our daughter. I would strongly recommend this book. The short daily entries are easy to get through and just enough to ease my mind. Thank you.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 1, 2024Verified PurchaseI bought this book when my mom died. These are daily meditations to help you remember and embrace grief. I have actually given this gift in lieu of flowers to a family member as well.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 10, 2015Verified PurchaseAn amazing daily read on grief - I found this very comforting and helpful for me, in a time when maybe not everyone is able to relate to the subject, this book makes you feel understood, and helps you work through some of your more complex thoughts about immortality, life, death, loss and grief to name a few. It is very thought provoking and is very inclusive of all religions and beliefs, in the sense that it doesn't compartmentalize any one view of how things are. I find this book helpful to read when I am feeling waves of grief, or when I wake up, or before I go to sleep - it is nice to connect with these thoughts without having to read a whole book which might sometimes feel burdensome. The one-a-day entries are like a little advent calendar for the grieving soul. I got copies for my whole family and they are loving it too. Would highly recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars Irresponsible book binding by the printers
Verified PurchaseThis is a classic book, that provides some solace and words express the loss over 365 days, and we can repeat as the healing is unending...but the printer, William Morrow (an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers) shows no appreciation of reading a book - for every page one has to prise the book at the binder to read the words at the inner edges (do see the image). The printer has reduced a 5-Star content-book to a 2-star reading experience - a disgrace to the dignity of reading!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend, love it !
Verified PurchaseExcellent book. Beautifully written and thought out with compassion and understanding of the pain and grief that
comes with loss. It seems that almost every entry causes you to say, yes, yes that's how I feel, and although I'm suffering, I'm not alone and all of my feelings are normal. Highly recommend for anyone who has lost a loved one including a pet.
