Since 1921

Hario was established in 1921 in Tokyo, Japan as a manufacturer of laboratory glassware. By the late 1940s, after many years of research, the company introduced its heatproof "HARIO glass", which allowed the company to introduce its first coffee product - the Hario coffee syphon. After years of expansion in a number of different categories, in 2005, Hario released its iconic V60 Dripper, which has since become the most widely used dripper for manual pour over coffee. Hario's current catalog now spans kitchenware, laboratory glassware, automotive headlights, aromatherapy, pets products and jewelry, with a particular focus on specialty coffee and tea accessories. In addition to its dedication to product quality, Hario has an unwavering commitment to social responsibility, operating its pollution-free glass factory which utilizes 100% natural ingredients.

Perfect to travel

Perfect to travel
I use this grinder for espresso at home but wanted manual while camping. The burr gives a perfect coffee but still takes 2-3 minutes to ground one espresso dose...here comes my cordless drill to make this morning task much faster ;-) Update after using it for 3 weeks: it seems the burr setting is getting loose over time and I have to re tight it every week to have the espresso powder like grind.

This is my third Hario grinder and the second slim I have purchased.

I like the slim better than other grinders because it is slim and easier to hold while cranking. I am able to wrap my entire hand around this grinder as opposed to certain other grinders that are as thick as a mug and my hand tires on those grinders keeping the grinder from moving while cranking. The grinder cranks smoothly and makes relatively easy work of the beans. Everything that is ground is exceptionally consistent. For burr grinders the cost is reasonable. It is also cheaper than typical electrical burr grinders. Since I generally am not grinding a significant amount of grinds each time, I don't mind using a hand crank grinder over an electric burr grinder.

The slim is easy to use and adjust and can grind beans for espresso or coarser grains for other types of coffee. Though made of plastic it is very durable. I never clean the grinder with water, but it would be safe to do so (I brush it out with a dry paper towel only). The hand crank detaches when you load beans into the reservoir and for storage purposes. This grinder is also excellent for travel and camping.

The top reservoir can contain about 3-5 cups worth of grinds. If set on one of the finest settings, it'll probably take around a minute or two to grind enough for 1-2 cups of coffee. If set on a coarser setting, it takes around 15-30 seconds to grind. Unscrewing the bottom and pouring into my cup/aeropress etc. is clean as the hole is far more narrow than other burr grinder post grind containers. There is very little static unlike electric burr grinders which I seem to often end up getting grinds onto the counter top when it inevitably clumps to other grinds or statics to the edge and comes out weirdly from the container.

If I ever need another grinder, I'd consider grabbing another one of these, even considering it over electric burr grinder since I don't make exceptionally large batches anyways.

Burr and overall shape seems about the same as the previous model, but the hex nut at the top is bigger (fixing a complaint about the old one) and the top fits more snugly. Feels overall like a solid improvement.

The new mill is grinding coffee a bit faster than the old model. It certainly grinds quickly enough at fine grind for a cup of coffee well before the kettle boils. It's easy to tip the grinds into an Aeropress with no mess. The ceramic burr is nicely done, it appears to be good quality and nicely engineered.

Its predecessor ground a pound of coffee (at least) every week for 5 years (before being dropped one time too many).

I'm pleased to say I'm very satisfied with the quality and performance of the updated model.

need a compact size burr grinder for espresso. This fits the purpose. Excellent japanese workmanship. At the finest setting, NO water could go through porterfilter which means it's so fine that it could be used for Turkish coffee. Once dialed back a few click, it's perfect for espresso.
The only downside, granted, given the compact size and manual operations, it takes some grip to hold it and a few minutes to grind 20 grams beans as it could get tiresome with a few cranks. If space permits, I would still go for a more expense and much bigger(not ideal) electronic burr grinder.

It took the first 3 uses to get the proper grinding for my espresso machine. Since I only drink decaf, there isn't a big choice of espresso ground decaf coffee. I actually got this in order to be able to grind regular percolator ground coffee into a finer grind to use it for espresso. This grinder works very well with whole coffee beans as well as with ground coffee. Since the design is tall, it's easier to use when holding with both hands rather than on a top counter. The handle seems to have been improved since the previous model as both parts are made of sturdy metal with an hexagonal pattern. The only inconvenient for me is that since the cover and the bottom container are made of dark transparent plastic, it makes it hard to see the coffee through it and evaluate how much coffee there is in them.

The grinder seems very good. The only problem is that the adjustment knob does not stay fixed. So if you set it on fine, it will loosen up over time and you end up with coarse ground coffee after a few days.

Works great. I have been using it twice a day for two months now. The handle is very solid and firmly attaches. No wear on the metal visible so far.
The top plastic cover also fits very tightly and keeps the beans inside the mill.
The bottom part is plastic, at first I was afraid of static and that the coffee would stick to the plastic but it's not a big issue and the coffee gets out very easy. Now I even think it's an advantage because a glass bottom could break if dropped.
The mill's mechanism is very stable and it's easy to turn and adjust.
At coarse grind, french press, it will take around 1min to grind to the one cup mark. Two cups takes twice the time ;-)

I like the fact that it is high quality plastic. It’s light and travel worthy. Most importantly, it can grind really fine in between espresso and Turkish grind size. The finest grind is so fine that some of it drops through the holes of the portafilter basket. At the third click my grind was so fine that water could not go through the coffee grind in the filter, so I had to adjust it back to the fourth (4) click courser from zero. I swear that this can grind Turkish at fine grinds if I want it to. Don’t believe any reviewer online until you personally experience it. I am very pleased with it. I don’t see myself upgrading to something more expensive for a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars É bom e eficaz, mas é bom ver o manual ou vídeo no YT

5.0 out of 5 stars So far so good
Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2019

Ticked off a lot of the marks I was looking for:

    1. Good materials (the plastic bits feel quite sturdy, not your standard cheap plastic)
    2. Easy to take apart and maintain/clean
    3. Gives relatively consistent grinds to brew a decent cup of coffee
    4. Grinds 25g in a manageable amount of time (a few minutes)
    5. Won't wake up the whole house.

The bonus is that it's slim and easy to travel with, although that wasn't one of my original intentions for purchasing this product. The grinds are more consistent that what you'd get from a blade grinder (even accounting for tricks like shaking the blade grinder periodically to re-distribute the bean chunks), although it takes a little bit of elbow grease. I work an office job and definitely don't mind a little bit of a workout. In terms of doing a set of burpees or something of similar intensity, grinding some coffee beans with this is not nearly as bad. It won't be able to get you all of the notes labeled on your specialty coffee, but the taste of the coffee is better than your average blade-ground brew (all other variables like beans and brew method held constant). Some tricks I've learned:

    1) To help stabilize the outer ceramic burr, I put some rubber bands around it to keep it in place. It helped the grind consistency a lot, although you will still get some fines and some bigger chunks. It's not going to be on par with a good electric burr grinder that costs over $100.
    2) If you have shrimpy arms like me and can't hold the mill steady while grinding with just your hands alone, sit down and place it between your legs to hold it still while grinding. The work becomes a lot easier and the grinds will be more consistent without that extra motion from trying to keep it still with just your hands.
    3) Keep in mind that lighter roasts will be a bit harder to grind.

Overall, considering the price of burr grinders in general, this is a good value, and even if I decide to upgrade to an electric burr grinder at some point in the future, I'll still have this around for the days when a manual grinder is necessary.
