First of all, watch the prices as they vacillate [for both black and white trim] between 99 and 150. My only negative about this machine is the absence of information about the processes it goes through. Hamilton Beach provides all of that for a similar newer model -- I had to work it out myself to know when to remove the paddle to avoid that big hole. I purchased it in black for a young friend, tested it, ordered her the one in white and am keeping the black for myself. It's been used four times - it has never travelled on the counter. Yesterday when she visited I showed her how to guarantee a good loaf -- it is mandatory to watch the kneading process [for all bread machines] because different flours absorb different amounts of water and the only way to know if the dough is right is to watch its behaviour. Because you are watching the dough, you can make additions like seeds. Don't use the 2# setting unless you are just making dough, and do remove the paddle at 1:40. That gives time for the dough to have its final rise and be baked. Choose the light crust.
One of the things this machine does is to divide the kneading into two periods -- it permits a preliminary rise after the first kneading, during which water gets absorbed, and after that goes through a second kneading. I can compare this only to a Black and Decker and my Cuisinart Convection, which have only one kneading segment -- Hamilton Beach has a superior programme.
If you are prepared to watch the kneading [look for film clips at saladinajar.com] you will have 100% success with this machine. However, if you just put the ingredients in and leave, or set the timer, you are likely to be disappointed because if the dough needed more water [add 1 tbsp at a time] or more flour [add 1 tbsp at a time] you will not have known.
I am copying this review for the black trim.
Hamilton Beach: please, make a chart of the steps and times available online. I called you and spoke to two clueless reps and no one ever got back to me. I had to stay near the machine and note each step and the time in order to know when to remove the paddle [doing so leaves a small hole only].

�鶹�� had this "Artisan" bread machine (model 29985F) on special recently, and considering my older Hamilton Beach machine (Homebaker Breadmaker, model 29882C) was wearing out, and it was no longer made or parts were no longer available, I got one of them. It was a disaster.

This pan in this Artisan model is smaller than the Homebaker (138x138x158mm compared to 138x180x158mm), but recipes in the manuals for these two machines seems the same. I wanted to make a loaf to test the new one, so I chose a 2 lb. Whole Grain Bread.

There were already problems with this recipe, but I decided to do it anyway: 4½ cups of flour (Huh? I read in some FAQ that you should never exceed 4 cups of flour); 2 TBSP of vital wheat gluten (not necessary, this stuff should only be used for certain heavy breads which will not rise easily, i.e., rye flour-based) and 2 TBSP of bread machine yeast (again, too much).

I have rarely used the recipes for the Homebaker in its manual, I have had much more luck (at least 90% successes) with an older Black and Decker manual with its recipes, or even recipes from the Internet. The recent Hamilton Beach manuals don't have many recipes, and they have weird ingredients like xanthan gum which you will rarely use.

Anyway ... this 2 lb. whole wheat loaf made with the Artisan machine was a bomb. The time for this was 3:42 compared to 3:00 for the Homebaker. (There is NO CHART for times in the recipe book for the Artisan machine, only summaries of total times, which I found to be really annoying.) With over an hour of time left on the Artisan machine, the bread was already hitting the viewing window, even after I punched it down gently 3 times. I finally gave up and with some difficulty dumped all the dough out and made whole wheat buns and cooked them in my stove's oven, which turned out OK.

The next day I decided to make another whole grain bread 1½ pound loaf (smaller than the 2 lb. disaster from the day before) similar to my "kitchen sink bread," using the seven-grain bread recipe from the Black & Decker book. I have made this recipe many times before, never had a problem. Again, this recipe bombed, hitting the viewing window. I let this thing cook all the way to the end, and it made a huge mess (see photos). The majority of this loaf below the exploding top was OK.

I can't believe this Artisan machine has got a lot of favorable reviews on �鶹��. I returned it.

Points to Hamilton-Beach, though, I e-mailed them and despite my comments being pretty nasty (like the above), they recommended that I should get another model that they make -- 29981 or 29982.

Short review: Recommended for anyone in need of a compact, light weight, relatively low-cost bread machine that has plenty of features and functions and makes tasty loaves.

Long review:
The Hamilton Beach Artisan Bread Machine is a handy replacement for an old Sunbeam bread maker that reached end of life recently. The new unit is light and takes up much less counter space than the previous unit. The 1 lb loaves are perfect for 2 people to use while the bread is still fresh.

I considered several other models including the HB basic (12 function) bread machine that was recently listed as a best budget buy by America's Test Kitchen. Since I do like to make artisan loaves in occasion and based on some other comparisons between the basic and artisan machines, I decided to spend the few extra dollars for the artisan machine. The basic model may fit your needs and save some money if you don't need the artisan model's features). I'm happy with the choice of the artisan machine - it makes great bread, looks nice, and has plenty of features for experimenting with different bread and dough types.

Once unboxed and cleaned, I started with the basic white sandwich recipe in the owners manual and it made some of the best sandwich bread I've had in recent memory. I followed that up with a sun dried tomato & cheddar cheese loaf that's also very tasty.

I'm looking forward to experimenting with the other modes and having fresh bread from my own kitchen.

Great little bread machine - perfect for small loaves

Short review: Recommended for anyone in need of a compact, light weight, relatively low-cost bread machine that has plenty of features and functions and makes tasty loaves.

Long review:
The Hamilton Beach Artisan Bread Machine is a handy replacement for an old Sunbeam bread maker that reached end of life recently. The new unit is light and takes up much less counter space than the previous unit. The 1 lb loaves are perfect for 2 people to use while the bread is still fresh.

I considered several other models including the HB basic (12 function) bread machine that was recently listed as a best budget buy by America's Test Kitchen. Since I do like to make artisan loaves in occasion and based on some other comparisons between the basic and artisan machines, I decided to spend the few extra dollars for the artisan machine. The basic model may fit your needs and save some money if you don't need the artisan model's features). I'm happy with the choice of the artisan machine - it makes great bread, looks nice, and has plenty of features for experimenting with different bread and dough types.

My first bread maker ever! So far I've made four loaves over two weeks time. I'm very happy with my HB bread maker model 29985. It took me several weeks researching different brands, sizes, and prices. I carefully read through 100's and 100's reviews under each brand and model I chose to look at. The reviews heavily influenced me to buy American made appliance for first time owning one. Mainly bc the appliance manuals were difficult to read, understand and had errors and steep learning curves. I have some knowledge about bread making and know the process must be followed if I wanted a successful product. I learned a lot from reviews and mistakes people made so I felt I was a few steps ahead of the game when my HB bread maker arrived. Everyone suggested to do the initial 15 minute cook off at least 3 times. Which I did. I did not notice any smoking or heavy obnoxious odor even the manual warns. The manual warns the unit may walk during the various cycles and in fact mine did, however I wedged it between my microwave and a heavy toaster oven. I put it on a foam placemats with sticky tape under the matt and no matter how many times I checked on the appliance during the various cycles I never had a problem with unit walking to the front of my counter. It just worked out perfect. The cord is in a strange place, kinda awkward when plugging it in. The biggest complaint was no backlight on the readout. I totally agree. We had to use a flashlight to see where the little indicator was moving as we cycled through the menu, bread size, crust color, etc... I wanted to return for a bread maker with easy to see and read menu. Hubby said he would figure it all out and show me. He has been excited about fresh homemade bread without any preservatives or added chemical ingredients. That's the plus side of this item. You get to control what you put in your body. We have thoroughly enjoyed this Hamilton Beach bread maker. Now I need to find a bread maker cookbook for beginners hopefully with step by step instructions with full color photos. I used recipes on Hamilton Beach website. I also found all kinds of helpful information on HB Website. We have decided to buy an appropriate extension cord so we can move unit to opposite counter that does not have an outlet. The manual says it's ok to use correct extension cord. I'll try to update my review as time passes to help other beginners in their search for a great decent priced bread maker. For the money I'm happy. I plan on making bread twice per week. It works as it should I think. Its just not worth having another appliance in my opinion. I made one loaf, and it was tough to tell what part of the process it was in so I could add nuts. It would be helpful to have some sort of display that shows progress. I also made carrot cake and it just would not cook the center. I ended up taking it out and putting it in the oven. Again, this appliance is okay, but it definitely did not inspire me to keep making bread as I intended.

The loaf is about 4-1/4” high. I just LOVE the small size and light weight of this machine! I’ve had 2 other bread machines in the past, one being a fancy Zojirushi, and I like this better. The only thing this can’t do that the Z could is program in your own settings. And I never found a place to store the Z in the kitchen as it was so big and heavy and my kitchen is small. I love, love this Hamilton Beach. Simple, easy, small. The paddle did not come out inside the bread and it took some soaking and a little work to get the paddle out of the pan. The bread slid right out. The control panel is a little hard to read because it’s not back-lit and you need a light on to read it, hence the 4 stars for ease of use. I placed it on a soft rubber mat to keep it from moving while it kneads, because all bread makers do that. I learned from past experience that having a bread machine, any bread machine, on a Formica counter top can mar the surface because, as it kneads, the feet move around a little in the same spot. So, protect your counter with something and get one of these.

I just got this delivered and tried it out immediately. The bread (flour rye/wheat mix) came out pretty good.
I have to agree with some of the reviews that the display is really hard to read (used flashlight to read) and Hamilton should really look into it. Also the power cord is in a weird place, on the side instead of the back. That's just my preference.

Because of the display I am giving 4 stars but overall it worked pretty well for my first attempt (besides mistake below 🥴)

Just a reminder for all newbies:
please read the instructions. Me thinking I know appliances, I washed it but didn't do the step of an empty bake lol! And don't forget the little kneading part 🤣, I was so excited that I forgot to add it and saw it next to the machine when it already started. After couple minutes in I realized it and made a messy attempt to put it in. Now it's stuck in my bread 🤦🏻‍♀️.
