I personally enjoyed this book a lot. The first five chapters were an amazing introduction. The highlights were the intense combat, John-117’s inner thoughts, and the overall gritty atmosphere. It also showcased that despite John and the other Spartans of Blue team having the best training, the best equipment, and being supersoldiers 500 years into the future, his lack of combat experience limited his ability to turn the tide in that first battle.
The rest of the book after the initial battle was filled with back and forths between Blue team traversing through a hostile environment to complete their next big objective and the Covenant Sangheili’s perspective on trying to hunt down the Spartans. I was thoroughly entertained throughout the entire journey.
Troy Denning’s strongest ability is his attention to detail. The way he describes the MJOLNIR armour the Spartans wear gave off Iron Man vibes, which I thought were a very nice touch. There was also a reference made to planet Gao, the setting of Halo: Last Light, which I think fans of that book would appreciate.

A Master Chief story and original full-length novel set in the Halo universe—based on the New York Times bestselling video game series!
2526. It has been more than a year since humanity first encountered the hostile military alliance of alien races known as the Covenant, and several weeks after the United Nations Space Command’s devastating counterattack of Operation: SILENT STORM was deemed an overwhelming success. The UNSC has put its faith in the hands of the Spartans, led by the legendary Master Chief, John-117: enhanced super-soldiers raised and trained from childhood via a clandestine black ops project to be living weapons. But the Covenant—enraged and fearful of their enemy’s unexpected strategies and prowess—is not taking its recent defeat lightly, and is now fully determined to eradicate humanity from existence, brutally overrunning the ill-fated planets of the Outer Colonies faster than retreats can be ordered.
If the UNSC has any chance of stemming the tide of the war, the Master Chief and Blue Team must drop onto an empty, hellish world in order to capture a disabled Covenant frigate filled with valuable technology. It has all the makings of a trap, but the bait is far too tempting to ignore—and this tantalizing prize is being offered by a disgraced and vengeful Covenant fleetmaster, whose sole opportunity for redemption lies in extinguishing humanity’s only hope of survival…

- Reviewed in Canada on September 1, 2020Verified PurchaseI'm a sucker when it comes to anything regarding Blue Team. That being said reading this novel allows you in-depth understanding as to how John, Fred, Linda and Kelly work in such cohesion among one another and I absolutely love it.
These later novels in the Halo franchise really provide insight that Spartan II's arent just emotionless machines. They all have personalities that make them so unique.
I do suggest reading Silent Storm first. Some say that that pacing is better in Silent Strom than in Oblivion but I found each to have their own strengths in plot and character development.
If you are a Halo fan then definitely give this novel a read!
- Reviewed in Canada on October 13, 2019Verified PurchaseThis book is very well written, Blue team and Master Chief are in character, all other characters introduced are very interesting and great additions to the Halo lore. The setting is arid, tense, and a hotbed of action, I could not put down this book! This is an amazing addition to the Halo series.. Troy Denning is a fantastic author, with a very creative mind. And if I dare say on par with Eric Nylund! And, while not necessary, I would personally recommend reading Silent Storm before this book.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 13, 2021Verified PurchaseGood book for those eating to see more of how chief became the person he is.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 27, 2019Verified PurchaseEasy to visualize and follow the story as it was written, what happens to the orbs though I'm super curious
- Reviewed in Canada on April 3, 2020Verified PurchaseThis book got off to a good start, but kinda dragged its feet for 2/3's of the book. Compared to Silent Storm, which felt like a high intensity battle from beginning to end, Oblivion seems starts strong but then sorta slogs its way to the end. There are a few battles here and there that snag your interest but for roughly half the book(it felt like it at least), characters will just be basically walking around or dwelling on disagreements earlier in the book.
Honestly, this book felt like it dragged on and on and on to the point that I wanted it to end so I could stop reading it. Its really shocking how this book is such a stark contrast from Silent Storm. Between the characters semi-constant inner monologues/thoughts and the walking/running/driving to the objective, this book really never ends up going anywhere meaningful. The few battles in the book are good, but they are few and far between(you'll have to slog through alot of the previously mentioned to get to them). This book adds basically nothing significant to the Halo universe from a lore perspective, so if your a halo lore fan, this book is a solid pass. Extra star for the cover art though, it looks really awesome.
I suspect I'll probably not read this again for a very long time. Overall I would recommend Halo: Oblivion as this will likely end up being a trilogy along with Silent Storm.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 5, 2020Verified PurchaseThis book was so difficult to get through, and I've been a die hard fan since the day Halo:CE was released, so it's hard to believe that I found a Master chief story so unbelievably boring. The writer peppered in small moments of of battlefield action in between large chunks of monotonous exposition that went into so much useless detail that I found myself wanting to skip pages just to get to the next chapter. Please don't put yourself through the torture of trying to finish this story as the author clearly has intentions of writing multiple books in this series and each one looks to be getting worse than the one before.
