What can I say about the talented KST that has not already been said? Once again she turns in a perfect performance, as the mysterious sister returned from many years "travelling". But little by little we learn the shocking truth, and we still admire her and want her to succeed in her new life. KST is ably supported by her co-stars. A lovely film.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 22, 2014Verified PurchaseKeeps you guessing right till the end, when all is revealed. Not really my kind of story. Nonetheless, an interesting subject matter treated in a mature, thoughtful manner. Worth watching.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 19, 2017I like this film rather more than when I first saw it. It was a 2009 César Nominee for Meilleur Film (Best Feature Film). It won Meilleur Premier Film (Best First Feature Film), and Kristin Scott Thomas was nominated for Meilleure Actrice (Best Actress).
- Reviewed in Canada on April 1, 2012This French-subtitled feature just aired on TVOntario. The Toronto Starweek tv guide promoted the story as "a world-weary woman tries to reconnect with her estranged sister" starring British (and impressively bilingual) Kristin Scott Thomas, proving herself to be a world class actress. This film should have been recognized and nominated for at least a Golden Globe by the Hollywood Foreign Press, just recently made in 2008. Am glad I didn't miss this one. Was shot in Quebec.

5.0 out of 5 stars Une tuerie !
Verified PurchaseUne tueuse d'enfant...

5.0 out of 5 stars "Ich bin da."

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost Flawless
Verified PurchaseI'm a little embarrassed to review this movie because some other 鶹 reviewers have already done such a good job. Yet in the end I'll add my ten cents worth because it bears repeating that this is definitely a movie to be seen by anyone who cares about quality film-making. Kristen Scott Thomas turns in the performance of a lifetime (how good it is to see her break free of those Repressed English Wife roles she tends to get stuck with) and the rest of the cast turn in performances that are almost on a par. The plot of the movie is less important than the subtlety with which the portrait of Scott Thomas' character is drawn. Shakespeare's plots, for example, are often a bit thin but it is his characterization and wonderful lines that we resonate with. Likewise with Il y a Longtemps Que Je T'Aime the plot device is merely the vehicle upon which to hang the central themes of love and suffering and forgiveness.
Some reviewers appear to be unable to come to terms with the notion of mercy killing, and thus their reviews all descend into a monotonic rant of "it's impossible to believe she'd kill her own son." Perhaps a quick glance over the Atlantic would help, because euthanasia is actually an important topic that receives a wide range of consideration in many countries outside the USA. More important than whether one "believes" it would be possible for a loving mother to want to spare her child unbearable suffering, the point of the movie is that no action is without consequences and we must learn somehow to live with them afterwards. American movies are too often full of violence and at the end the protagonist rides off into the sunset untroubled by the slaughter. Real life is much more complex than this, thank goodness, and this movie is really the antithesis of such pablum. This movie is about the "what happened afterwards" and although the denouement does feel just a trifle contrived it does so not because of its psychological veracity but because of the "surprise ending" cinematic convention. This movie didn't need such an artifice - it stands firmly on its main themes and superb execution in all areas. Really there is nothing weak at all in this film. Other reviewers have accurately commented on the superb performances, the superior camera work, the direction and editing. Everything works as it should, quietly and discretely, contributing to this beautiful little masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un buena pelicula y una interpretación maravillosa de Kristen Scott-Thomas
Fascinante Kristin Scott Thomas. Un película que hay que ver.

5.0 out of 5 stars "A La Claire Fontaine"
Verified PurchaseIt's a rarity nowadays, but films like these really make you think about life, and how we perceive things, like whether this blu-ray is a classic, well I think it is, because after renting it, I ordered it, and that's a rarity for me. This film touched me, the sincerity, the fact it's not all coloured to suit the cinema, and the fact it's not glamorised or dressed up, and covered in make up make this a real treasure - and finding it has really opened my eyes to the way we perceive life, our bond with family, and the way we see criminality.
Kristin Scott-Thomas is amazing as Juliette - a red-eyed timid woman who has come back to the family after being away for so long, and coming back to Léa's home, and we see how Juliette rebuilds her life, and how she feels in life - all beautifully told without special effects, which makes this such an important piece of cinema for me. The realness, tenderness, and almost classical way of direction, photography and script really put this above anything else - this is surely in my top ten.
This Blu-Ray really does the film justice too, the beautiful colours flow nicely on-screen, and the picture is sharp - and the sound is excellent, though I found the PCM track too quiet on my system, so I used the surround sound 5.1 - which is ample in my opinion. The subtitles (which I didn't use) were clear and well set out on the picture, and the framing is perfect.
The extras - though not many are just superb, an interview with Philippe Claudel, writer and director is quite compelling, and lasts over an hour. There are something like 5 deleted scenes, and to me they were really not needed - so good call by Claudel.
This really is a masterpiece - the whole crew have done such a superb job. Don't rent this, buy it, you'll never regret it. Wish I could tell you more about the movie, but that would spoil it and I feel that would be criminal to do so.
