We have a new Macbook Air and were a little apprehensive about pairing it with an HP Printer only because its not a brand we've ever used before. There are even directions for unpacking which is kind of cool. Plug it in and used the QR code to get to the online set up and the rest was easy. Connected to the WiFi right away everything works like it should. I like that for copying you don't feed it in you place the document on the scanning bed and indicate how many copies and print. Start up takes a bit long but thats fine as long as it does a good job

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Printing and Photocopying Black and White and Color Documents
Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2025
鶹 Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
This printer is one of five that I have connected to my local area network (LAN) and is one of two HP printers. Since this printer replaced another one that was connected to my network via an Ethernet cable, I used that connection to set-up this printer. This printer also supports a WiFi connection and a direct USB connection to a computer, but it "wants" an Internet connection for setup, monitoring and firmware updates. You can see from the attached message how HP uses their connection. Another feature called "HP+" is an optional installation that allows sending documents to this printer from any authorized Internet connected computer, which I declined and did not evaluate. The paper tray holds about a half-ream of paper.

My installation went without a hitch but, surprisingly, did not include any drivers for the scanner, which I had to download separately from HP's Website and install. The installation provides the option of not having this printer "monitored" by HP, but usually requires declining it at least twice during each step of the printer setup.

The quality of color documents produced by this printer is excellent. Paper feed is smooth and jam free even when using the duplexing (automatically printing both sides) feature. Photocopies made with this printer/scanner are very good and are difficult to distinguish from the original, so I highly rate the photocopy feature.

HP insists that you use their ink cartridges, not third-party ink sources, and will shut down the printer if it detects the installation of cheaper clone cartridges. This printer also insists on specifying HP brand glossy or matte paper for printing photos. Since I use other brands of photo paper, the results that I get for photos from this printer and my other HP printer are not the best, so I use another printer on my LAN to print my photos.

For printing or copying black and white and color documents I believe you would have a tough time beating the quality of this printer with another brand. Perhaps if I used HP brand coated photo paper I would have better results, but I have subtracted a star from my review because this printer does not produce the best results with my other brands of photo paper.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT a simple printer for your computer

    What happened to HP?
Old HP printer chugged along for over a decade.
The new HP printer won't connect to my computer. It want's to connect to my phone and (I guess, by what it's asking) to monitor my phone usage? What the 4311?
I don't want the printer on my phone, I want it on my computer and I want it to be a printer, not a third party in my bedroom.

Printer installed without a hitch. Has all features you could ever need --- can print from any computer or phone in my house. Color is clear and print is sharp. Firmware can be updated as it is released to keep your printer current. I have used the "instant ink" feature before. Just be aware that, if you cancel that service, you can no longer use the provided ink cartridges (HP will disable those mailed cartridges) and will have to purchase replacements. Works great for me and I am very happy with the product.

This all in one printer and scanner was fairly easy to set up. The color touchscreen makes selecting and inputting information a breeze. The instruction manual was helpful and very needed. One thing the manual doesn't mention is that there is a white plastic "placeholder" piece where the color cartridges will be installed and you can discard that piece. I was trying for several minutes to fit my cartridges into that white piece before I figured out it's not actually part of the printer. The test page printed out great right away and it prints faster than my old printer for sure. Now, setting it up to work via the app was the tricky part. The company really, really wants to get you signed up for one of their two ongoing monitoring services and it's a bit tricky to avoid signing up for either of them. The HP Smart app is the one that you can use to print things from your phone, so you'll want to download that and run the setup, making sure your phone's wifi is connected to the same network as your printer. It actually took a few times to get the app to recognize the printer and connect, but I eventually succeeded. But unfortunately when it comes to printing items wirelessly, I have about a 50% success rate on the first shot every time I go to print because my printer keeps going offline. I have to go wake it up by tapping on the screen and then it connects and is ready to receive data. That's not very convenient for when I'm not in the same room as my printer. Nevertheless the print and scan quality is great. If there's a satisfactory fix for the connectivity issues, then this printer will be top notch in my book.
