About the author

Homer was probably born around 725BC on the Coast of Asia Minor, now the coast of Turkey, but then really a part of Greece. Homer was the first Greek writer whose work survives.
He was one of a long line of bards, or poets, who worked in the oral tradition. Homer and other bards of the time could recite, or chant, long epic poems. Both works attributed to Homer - The Iliad and The Odyssey - are over ten thousand lines long in the original. Homer must have had an amazing memory but was helped by the formulaic poetry style of the time.
In The Iliad Homer sang of death and glory, of a few days in the struggle between the Greeks and the Trojans. Mortal men played out their fate under the gaze of the gods. The Odyssey is the original collection of tall traveller's tales. Odysseus, on his way home from the Trojan War, encounters all kinds of marvels from one-eyed giants to witches and beautiful temptresses. His adventures are many and memorable before he gets back to Ithaca and his faithful wife Penelope.
We can never be certain that both these stories belonged to Homer. In fact 'Homer' may not be a real name but a kind of nickname meaning perhaps 'the hostage' or 'the blind one'. Whatever the truth of their origin, the two stories, developed around three thousand years ago, may well still be read in three thousand years' time.

- Reviewed in Canada on February 12, 2025Verified PurchaseI bought this for my son and had to hear many grand tales in the Illiad. I was like, k, that's pretty neat. Good to know. Thx, son, I'm really happy to have gifted you such enlightenment after all that LOTR reading you've done. But then he went onto Odyssey, and I guess every chick was after this rippling muscle dude even though he was married and his wife was fending off suitors for years and years. This dude, though, was getting really cozy with a goddess or two. I didn't like his personality so it wasn't his personality that was attracting these other worldly stunning chicks. I think he also complimented one of them, said something to the effect of how stunning she was, even though his poor wife was at home, fending off suitors, clock watching for his return while he was out flexing his pectorals like the golden knight from clash royale. I think she deserved better. Pretty sure he returned and killed the suitors. But don't worry, she gave him permission. And those goddess chicks? Well, all is forgiven as he selflessly offered his muscles up for the freedom of his men.

of the two seminal sources for world literature!
- Reviewed in Canada on March 7, 2025Verified PurchaseIf you are buying the book, you know the stories, so there is no point talking about those. The printing and binding on the book is first rate and it will last for years. The language/translation is classical and if you are expecting a modern read, you will not be happy but it is nice to read a classic story and see the classical turns of phrasing that are used. The extra effort it takes to read it, is worth the effort. I would highly recommend it.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 27, 2023Verified PurchaseI have not had an opportunity to read this book yet. But it looks to be in excellent condition and fresh off the printing press. It arrived fast and I've always wanted to read this. The price was very fair so I purchased it. Once I finish the current series of books I'm reading this will be on my list to read very soon.

- Reviewed in Canada on October 17, 2024Verified PurchaseNot a bad translation thus far (I have not read the whole book) but I am also no expert on the Illiad or Odyssey. One thing I can say is that the book is pretty in some ways, yet flawed in others. For example, see the photos attached. The back of the book has a printed on price sticker! Very disappointing if you are looking for an aesthetically pleasing book. Another problem I have is that the thickness of the pages lends to words from the back of the page you are currently reading to bleed out thus, making the reading experience a little less engaging. All in all, a not too bad of a book but beware of the pics the advertisement shows since there is a literal pricetag printed on it lol

2.0 out of 5 stars 徱çã
