The New York Times bestseller—part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series Halo!

The twenty-sixth century. Once considered clandestine, the Spartan-II program has now gone public. Tales of armored super-soldiers fending off thousands of Covenant attacks have become the stuff of legend. While the Master Chief defends a besieged Earth, and the myriad factions of the Covenant continue their crusade to eliminate humanity, an ultra-secret cell of the Office of Naval Intelligence known as “Section Three” devises a plan to buy the UNSC vital time. It will need hundreds of willing soldiers, though—and one more Spartan—to get the job done.

The planet Onyx is virtually abandoned and the perfect place to set this new plan in motion. But when the Master Chief destroys Halo, something is triggered deep within Onyx: Ancient Forerunner technology stirs, and fleets of UNSC and Covenant vessels race to claim it and change the course of the Human-Covenant War. But this reawakened and ancient force may have plans of its own…

First and foremost, I will not spoil the contents of this book, other than that noting it's a really good read if you already enjoy Halo, Master Chief and his fellow Spartans.

The Halo game franchise has a great character driven story set in a massive backdrop, but only so much of that backstory can be told and explored through the game series. There is so much more to the Halo Universe worth exploring, and through books is the best medium to do it by.

The great thing about these series of books is:
1.) If you enjoy reading well crafted sci-fi genres, Halo's well worth the read on it's own, no gaming required
2.) Your not a gamer, or maybe a casual gamer where fast paced shooter style games isn't your forte
3.) Your a gamer, played through all the games main stories and want more Halo stories in the Halo universe
4.) The books have the advantage of covering the story in the game without needing to play the game
5.) Books are able to explore and expand further into the Halo universe beyond the games
6.) There's more to Halo than just the Master Chief alone, there's a diverse cast of characters and their stories, including other Spartans
7.) You get to experience the Halo universe through other characters and perspectives other than solely Master Chief's

Simply put: If you want more of the Halo story, these books are where to turn to. Give this book a read, you won't be disappointed.

I really enjoyed the story of the spartan-IIIs and how kurt rejoins the original spartan blue team toward the end. If you've read the other books, I would highly recommend this one as well

I gave this book four stars because the story itself is pretty good and is fairly engaging; more so in some places than others. However, I found this book to have atrocious editing . In places it was virtually incoherent, whole sentences needing to be reworked, as they were awkward and often did not use the most suitable words/tenses for the situation. There were also spelling errors. At times it ran clearly and smoothly, then seemed to sort of hit the skids, becoming laboured, and again, poorly written/edited. I do generally like Eric Nylund as an author, but whoever his editor is, needs to be fired. So, again, I DID generally like the overall story, but it was very annoying to read along, and then hit places filled with really stupid errors. Tor publishing should look closer at it's products, before letting them ship out.

Great book, can be read as a standalone for those familiar with Halo backstory. For those new to the expanded Halo universe I would recommend reading Fall of Reach first, though Ghosts of Onyx is easily the best in the series.

A fantastic Halo novel that focuses on the next generation of Spartans, the Spartan-IIIs. Great action and characterization of guys like Kurt and the Spartan-IIIs of Beta and Gamma Company.

I really enjoyed this book. I was wondering how I would like it since I knew it wasn't following Master Chief. I was pretty sceptical at the beginning but it turned out to be a really great book.

I would recommend it to anyone following the series, it's definitely a must if you're reading the Halo books to deepen your knowledge of this universe.

    Great book!

This story follows the history and creation of the Spartans, the genetically-enhanced super-soldiers of the Halo wars. The story follows their training to a planet, Black Onyx. There, the Covenant, Humanity, and the Forerunners clash in a battle royal that tests the mettle of the best and bravest that humanity has to offer.

This book isn't incredibly deep in terms of plot or morals, but the characters are decent (other than the Dr.), and the plot moves along at a good pace. The action is good, and the tactics and techno-geek is enough to keep you interested throughout the book.

So if you're looking for deep sci-fi to engage you, this isn't the right book. Try Starship Troopers instead. If you're looking for a quick, fun read about man versus aliens with really cool gear, this is the book for you.

This book had several different stories in it from Dr Halsey and Kelly to Kurt and the Spartan-III's that connect together at the end. This book has a lot of action and drama; also a lot of heart. It is hard to read about the soldiers who die fighting the Covenant, as the reader grows up with these characters and sees their struggles and their will to fight for the human race. The author does a great job with the new technologies that are revealed.
