The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm (1786–1859), were scholars best known for their lifelong dedication to collecting and publishing ancient German folk tales. Their groundbreaking Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children’s and Household Tales) was published in seven different editions between 1812 and 1857 and brought to the world’s attention such unforgettable characters as Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, and Snow White.

    My university used this book for a "German Fairy Tales" class, and it is a very good collection. I would call the potential reader's attention to a few points, though:

    1 - There is no introductory or explanatory text at all, anywhere in the book — well, that is, except for one very silly warning at the beginning, which advises adults to pre-screen these fairy tales before reading them to children, which is an absurdly insulting nod to spineless modern sensibilities and political correctness.

    Anyway, the lack of introductory text isn't necessarily important, except that it would have been nice to at least mention somewhere (*anywhere*) that the particular versions of the stories included here were taken from the final, 1857 edition of the Grimms' Kinder- und Hausmärchen. (I was able to figure this out on my own, by comparing various editions, but I shouldn't have needed to.) As any serious student of German literature should know, the Grimms edited and revised the stories with each edition, and there are often significant differences between one edition and another.

    So IF it matters to you, please be aware that these stories are from the 1857 edition.

    2 - It should be obvious, but this slim volume holds only a *selection* of the Grimms' fairy tales, not all of them. Even the original 1812/1815 edition contained 156 stories, and the final edition of 1857 contained over 200 of them — while this book contains only 46. Most of the better-known stories are included here, as one would expect, but no partial selection will ever satisfy everyone: it is always possible that some tale you like may have been omitted.

    3 - There are no illustrations at all. Of course that doesn't necessarily matter, but IF you were hoping for some, you'll want to find another edition.
