    Hollywood would like to believe that Canada does not exist. They film in Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, even Winnipeg, but then call them New York or Los Angeles, or Boston. And when they take an event from history, are you listening Ben Affleck?, they strip away all references to Canada they can, even if almost everyone involved in the actual event was Canadian.
    They have left one Canadian in "The Great Escape". The escape was organized by Canadians, executed by Canadians, and is a part of Canadian history, not American.
    But this is a great adventure film regardless of Hollywood's appropriating all heroic events and making them American centred. I'm just surprised that they haven't claimed Winston Churchill as an American considering his mother's nationality. And Cleopatra was from Tennessee, wasn't she?
    So,overlooking this theft of Canada's history, "The Great Escape" is hard to beat as a film. There isn't a lull in the action, a weak performance, and only a few plot slips, far less than in most war movies.
    Perhaps best of all, the movie is one that can be replayed more often than can most without wearing out its welcome. And the Blue Ray process adds an enormous amount of impact to this movie, so much so that it looks fresher, newer, sharper than what often is showing at the local movieplex. Several reviewers have criiticed the film for being poorly restored.My version is crystal or better yet, diamonds. They must have bought a very early version as this is faultless and details I missed on the big screen - often in one of the tunnels - are now sharp and crisp.
    If you haven't already, add this one to your collection, do it now. Then you can join me in mumbling about the theft of one's history while enjoying a beautifully crafted film.

    "In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft III, a maximum security prisoner of war camp designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history. Together, under the guidance of the brilliant Bartlett (Richard Attenborough), the resourceful Hendley (James Garner) and the steely, determined Hilts (Steve McQueen), the men plot, scheme and dig their way to freedom... at any cost!"

    First off, if you haven't seen the 1963 classic "The Great Escape", just stop reading this review and order it, even if this product was bare bones (which thankfully isn't the case) it would be a great value on the merits of the film alone. The Great Escape truly is one of the finest WWII films ever made on the subject.

    Now onto the extras, the DVD is loaded with all sorts of documentaries and featurettes as well as a director's commentary (Which is rare on films from this era)

    If you own it on VHS, UPGRADE, if you don't? Go OUT AND ORDER IT! Now I'm just sitting here and waiting for the 50th Anniversary bluray to get released.
