- Reviewed in Canada on May 8, 2014Verified PurchaseOf all Elton John's albums, none defined his career quite like Yellow Brick Road (somewhat surprising because double albums were not very popular then). There were the hits, of course, including the album title "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Candle in the Wind", "Bennie and the Jets", and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting". There were also quite a few songs that should have been hits but didn't make it either because of lack of release as a 45 single (remember those?) of lack of radio play, and, to be fair, there were a small number of forgettable tracks, but of all the albums Elton released in the early days, this was the one that launched him to stardom and sell-out stadium gigs. I bought this on LP (what else?) on release, later I bought the yellow vinyl release (well, you had to, didn't you...) which suffered from degraded sonics, and as soon as CDs started to make a splash in the very early 80s, I bought CDs of all these albums (at the time we thought LPs would disappear!). So, I think this is actually the fourth or fifth release of Goodbye I've paid for.
This box is a bit different than the other releases, though. To begin with, there's the remastered tracks from the double album now on one CDs The engineers went back to the original analog tapes and reengineered the sound using oversampling bit rates, resulting in a sound that is much better than the earlier CD reissues. For that alone, this box is worth the money. There's also a CD of other stars performing songs from the LPs, and these vary between good and great )(and the stylistic differences are interesting to note). I happily went through both CDs, both bringing back memories of been much, much younger the first time I heard those songs, and also being impressed with how good the remastering is, especially through a decent high-end system. But then there's the extras which round out this anniversary release. The two-CD release of their Christmas 1973 performance live on the BBC shows how Elton could rock in a live environment, and while the recording isn't up to par with the studio tracks, it's not bad at all. There's also a DVD of a documentary produced back in the same era about Elton and Taupin and the hits they were generating. Again, the quality is not great, but as a historical video it is worth watching. Having seen Elton on his tour this year, it's amusing to see how some things have changed, and some haven't!
The box contains four CDs, one DVD, and a nice book that covers the star and the era in his musical life. The hard-cover digest-size book is quite interesting, and contained some information I wasn't aware of despite reading most of the content released over the years about Elton. In truth, I found the CD and DVD slip covers in the box to be a bit tacky in appearance, but this is a minor quibble.
In the end, what do we have? A superbly engineered remastering of probably the most important album Elton put out in the early years (and perhaps even his entire career). The remastered CDs are worth the box price themselves; they are that good! The accompanying two live performance CDs and DVDs are nice filler, something most people will listen to or watch once, but for collectors they provide previously hard-to-get content. There's a lovely book with lots of information and photos. And there's the feeling that when you work through this box, you're celebrating the anniversary of one of rock's masterpieces, done by a man who defined rock music at the time (and for years to come), and who has had a remarkable career through the decades. A worthy investment all the way around.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 25, 2014Verified PurchaseIn the classic rock era, there are perhaps only a handful of especially iconic, form-shifting rock/pop performances.
The few superlative songs that the first time you hear them, you must ask, "What was THAT?"
Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Bob Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone, and surely Elton John's Funeral For A Friend are among the candidates for mention in the above category of history and genre making music.
So, if you are recalling the first time, probably late in 1973, that you heard the wind howl and the bell toll and Funeral For kick off John's double LP, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and perhaps would like to relive that moment, here's your best chance.
Because the music-17, very good to great songs including the mega-hit Candle In The Wind-has been given an excellent 2014 remaster and now probably sounds as good as your memory recalls it being 40 years ago. Maybe/probably even better.
The box set packaging is first rate, with a 100 page hard cover bound book, with lyrics, a history of the music and times, and dozens of sumptuous colour photographs that surely have rarely, or even never been seen before.
Springing for the Super Deluxe also gets you an essential two CD Christmas Eve '73 live, rollicking BBC performance of many of the tracks from the album as well as a very dated yet absolutely fascinating 45 minute DVD documentary of Elton and the gang done in the 70s at the height of EJ's fame. A covers CD, some B sides, X-Mas tunes, and a few unreleased demos round out the package.
Yet perhaps one of the most amazing things about Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was that despite having to abandoned original plans to record it in Kingston Jamaica due to studio issues, the complete double album was recorded, mixed and mastered in 17(!) days. Let any artist try duplicating that feat any time soon.
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, John's biggest seller and perhaps his greatest work can not be experienced better than with this new package.
UPDATE: For some reason, 鶹.ca is not separating the box set from the Pure Audio Blu-Ray of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road for review purposes.
So, I will.
And contrary to some reviews here, the box set reviewed above DOES NOT contain the 5.1 Blu-Ray mix of the album. It must be bought separately.
As well, some, here, have disparaged the 2003 surround mix done by Greg Penny at Flower Sound.
In my opinion, Mr. Penny should be getting, or hopefully has got a big cheuqe for his 11 year old endeavor, because it sounds like it was done last week, such is its stunning sound and production.
Some 5.1 mixers produce a dog's breakfast of swirling effects and gimmicks and by the time they are through, an album you have listened to for 40 years becomes, well, something else. It may sometimes have that "wow" factor, yet does not really sound like the original.
But Penny produced a surround mix that not only envelops the listener in many heretofore diminished or even hidden sounds, he also manages to makes it "sound" like the original.
Especially noticeable is the isolation of Elton's vocals, which many found to be understated in previous versions of this masterwork, including the original vinyl.
Even if you have a very modest 5.1 system, for the $20 asked for this disc, one can never go wrong.

- Reviewed in Canada on February 28, 2021Verified PurchaseI love this CD and have missed hearing for years. So, saw it at a good price, and grabbed it. LOVE IT! Sir Elton is in his glory as he sings his way to legendary status.
Sadly, the CD jewel case was crushed and mangled. Disgruntled couriers? All that was missing was the foot print on the package. The good news, is that the CD survived the poor shipping. The case, did not.
However, I bought the CD for the glorious music (not disappointed at all) and not the case.
Treat yourself, and buy this today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ottimo acquisto

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPER !!!!!!!!
