- Reviewed in Canada on April 20, 2025Verified PurchaseThis book is really interesting. It has many old gospels that I never knew about. The stories are strange but cool. I like reading about the different ideas early Christians had. The collection is big and good for people who want to learn. I think it’s good for students and teachers. I enjoyed exploring this part of history I didn’t know much about before. Good book.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 25, 2025Verified PurchaseThe book is good, I think it's great that they include all the books that aren't mainstream and books that have been forgotten. It helps give you a complete picture, and it makes you wonder if they were excluded due to political reasons or inaccuracies. either way if you like learning about god stuff, this offers a good perspective

5.0 out of 5 stars A Vital Resource for Understanding Early Christian Thought ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Verified PurchaseThis comprehensive collection of Gnostic texts represents a significant contribution to the study of early Christianity. As someone who has spent decades examining religious historical documents, I find this compilation particularly valuable for its breadth and scholarly approach.
The translation work strikes an effective balance between accessibility and academic rigor, allowing readers to engage meaningfully with these complex theological texts while maintaining their historical authenticity. The inclusion of lesser-known works alongside more familiar texts like the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Mary Magdalene provides crucial context for understanding the diverse spiritual landscape of the first three centuries CE.
What particularly impresses me is the careful attention to historical context throughout the volume. The annotations and introductory materials offer essential background information without overwhelming the primary texts themselves. This approach allows readers to grasp the complex theological and philosophical frameworks that shaped these writings while maintaining their focus on the original material.
While these texts sit outside the canonical tradition, their importance for understanding the development of early Christian thought cannot be overstated. They reveal a rich tapestry of theological debate and spiritual exploration that characterized the formative period of Christian history. For serious students of religious history, theological development, or ancient Mediterranean spirituality, this collection serves as an indispensable resource.
The only minor critique I would offer concerns the occasional inconsistency in formatting and punctuation, though these small issues do not significantly detract from the work's overall scholarly value. This volume stands as an essential addition to any serious religious studies library.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent literary addition
Verified PurchaseI've only recently read the canonical bible; not as a Christian, but as an admirer of perhaps the most fundamental literary text ever written. Far more enjoyable than I'd anticipated, so I was down to dig into some of the more esoteric or obscure gospels. And while I care little for how well they fit theologically or canonically, I loved them for their literary and emotional power. Anyone would benefit from reading these. If you're even remotely into e.g. greek philosophy, you'll love these insights and gospels. Really anyone living today could do with a bit of the gospels of thomas or truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Journey to the roots of Christianity
Verified PurchaseAn excellent read for those who wish to explore the vast amount of ideas and texts that circulated among the early Christian communities, the book brings together a series of reflections and anecdotes that show how the early Christians interpreted or reworked the figure of Jesus, very interesting for fans of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling glimpse into the texts left out of the Bible.
Verified PurchaseA compelling glimpse into the texts left out of the Bible.
Even as someone who's not religious, I found this book eye-opening. It adds a whole new layer of depth to familiar stories and challenges traditional perspectives. Some of the quotes felt a bit abrupt and could’ve benefited from more context, but overall, it’s a thought-provoking and worthwhile read.
