I originally bought the 25th anniversary blu ray. After comparing the two you immediately notice the lack of noise/grain in the 4k release. First photo is 4k release Second is 25th Anniversary bluray

The 4k disc's Dolby Atmos audio mix vs the standard Bluray's DTS-HD mix is a notable improvement as well. 4.5 stars.

When anime enthusiasts talk about classics of late 20th-century anime, Akira and Ghost In The Shell usually come up as critical cyberpunk hits. The creativity of Masamune Shirow’s cyberpunk manga got a dose of existential angst when it was turned into a 1995 animated feature film, and while it checks off most of the boxes for home video collectors, hardcore purists may want to still consider importing the Japanese 4K version instead of the Western release.

But first, let’s get the good stuff out of the way. The actual 4K/HDR image here is fantastic. There is a sharpness and level of detail here that is a noticeable step up from the HD Blu-Ray version, and thankfully, this 4K restoration is the original Ghost In The Shell, not the 2008 Ghost In The Shell 2.0 revision that did some color regrading and went in and tried to modernize some sequences with early 00s era computer-generated animation, which, in 2024, really DOES NOT hold up. Fortunately, this is the ’95 version with all that careful hand-drawn animation, and it looks fantastic in 4K. Another nice visual bump is the HDR giving more life to the abundance of neon and other signage and lighting that appears throughout the film. It also boosts the colors in general, looking more vibrant and saturated than its BD counterpart. Those brighter intensities really add more detail and dimension to some of the shots. This is about as good as Ghost In The Shell is likely to ever look.

The audio side is where things take a tumble, though again, this will only be a dealbreaker for purists. First and foremost, the best thing about this is it provides a pretty serviceable Dolby Atmos audio mix in both English and the original Japanese. Earlier BDs of this movie had 5.1 surround for English and only 2.0 for Japanese, but this has now been corrected, and while this isn’t the most explosive movie, the subwoofer still gets in some action, and the height channels kick in from time to time. But there are a few areas where things stumble for Japanese audio fans. One line one dialog has somehow been missed for the Japanese audio but is present in the English version. Perhaps more disagreeably for some, the final song in both the English and Japanese versions during the credits is the song “One Minute Warning” by The Passengers, but in the original Japanese version, it was “Chant III,” a variation on the haunting opening theme by the film’s composer, Kenji Kawai. For a lot of people, these omissions are probably not too terrible, but for the hardcore, these may be dealbreakers, especially since these errors don’t exist in the official Japanese 4K home video release.

There’s a smattering of extras here, two of them new for this 4K version, which is an improvement over the 25th anniversary BD that got nothing. The two new extras are some short features about the influence of the movie and its art design. There’s also a commentary with Westerners, not a commentary from the Japanese creators. Finally, a few extras culled from the DVD release are also included here. So, while this isn’t jam-packed extras compared to something like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, it still has something for fans.

All in all, this is generally a pretty good 4K upgrade for most people and fans. However, the absolute hardcore audio purists may want to skip this if they can’t stand the idea of one missing line in the Japanese track or incorrect song placement in the Japanese audio track end credits. All of this can be corrected by importing the much more expensive Japanese 4K disc.

Packaging quality and disk quality could be better. I was worried that the disk would shatter in my ps5, luckily it didn’t.

Video quality seems to be okay, I’m not an expert on Ghost in the Shell rereleases and after all it is an old movie.

Content wise - movie is great and I really like the interview with creators.

Great movie, especially if you love anime. The 4k hd dvd looks and sounds great. Comes in a cheap plastic no thrills case, but with a 4k hd dvd and blueray discs, along with a digital download voucher
