I bought this device thinking I would never use it. During a trek in Sardinia, we got lost in the mountains. Night was coming and there was no way we could make it to the next village. We couldn't find a path anymore and we had already walked for over 8 hours. For those interested, there is an old NATO base in Mount Limbara that jams GPS waves, which is why we got lost. We pressed the SOS button and we had a really quick answer from Garmin. They contacted the local emergency services who sent an helicopter to pick us up. Garmin made sure we were safe before stopping communicating with us. Garmin also communicated with my emergency contact several times to keep him informed of the situation with an interpreter. The local emergency services also communicated with us through the garmin messenger app. If I could, I would give Garmin and this device 6 stars. I would also give 6 stars to the emergency team in Italy.

Works mostly as advertised. App experience okay although you need to read carefully to understand the subscription and various limits. Under sparse canopy and open city environments, sending messages are fairly fast sometimes even under seconds. Perfectly usable for most conditions.
Problem: some country/region/sms operators will reject the messages sent out by this device. I’ve tested two different operators in Canada and UK and they work, but there’s one country where no message got through. I’m not gonna name that place but people are encouraged to research their own needs before purchase. Email seems to always work, for now. Not the most convenient to respond to but it works.
Battery will run down very quickly if you keep the device in places where satellite connection is difficult or impossible to establish such as indoors. The device will keep hunting for connection and drain the bat. Outdoors it seems to be doing fine. Most people will do fine just to turn it on occasionally.

The only issue with this device is that it’s not programmed to stop trying to find a signal, draining the battery in the process. You will need to turn it off every time you go indoors or in a no signal area to avoid losing the charge.

I've been using this for 2 months now and it's been reliable all the time. I bought it to bring camping and hiking with my little dude when there's no cell service. It's just to keep my partner up-to-date and to use in case of emergency.

I've also found it's also helpful to text folks who might be meeting up with us. I just used yesterday at a local lake that has no cell service to drop my location and they were able to find me thanks to the pin.

The battery life has been great. It can easily last the 2-3 day trips I take with location updates enabled. I don't intent to ever try and make it last much longer.

The plan is pricy. I ended up opting for the annual plan. I realized I'd otherwise either forget to activate it or think my activity wasn't "worth it" and then that'll of course be the time I need it.

I used this for the first time in the backcountry and it worked perfectly. Weather updates were accurate, tracking was excellent, messaging on the device and phone app worked every time.

My only gripe is the cost of the plans. Apple now offers free SOS messaging on all phones 14 and above. Samsung and Google have started rolling out free satellite messaging too. Third party devices like these Garmin units are now becoming obsolete. To remain competitive Garmin absolutely must lower the cost of these unrealistically expensive subscription plans before they destroy what dwindling market share they have left before cellphone companies eat their lunch.

This would have been a 5 star review otherwise. Overall a very good product from a hardware and software standpoint. That being said I would recommend upgrading your cellphone instead of buying this product in 2025 and beyond. The amount of money you will save in subscription costs can buy you a new flagship smartphone every 5 years. Better to keep that money in your pocket.

I've decided to return this item and buy an Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max instead.

Esto quiere decir que si lo apagas cada noche, casi una semana sin tener que recargar...
Y funciona con una app nueva que es muy facil de usar y mandar mensajes y reccibir.
Otra cosa importante es que puedes enviar mensajes y en el caso que tenga Red Celular, se manda por ese medio sin gastar tus mensajes Satelitales. Automaticamente busca cualquier señal y se manda rapido.

I have had an Insight Messenger for almost two years. I used this in a remote part of Madagascar. It functioned perfectly for what it’s designed to do. It’s not for unlimited texting, but it allows essential communication. A smart phone is necessary to send texts through the Garmin InTouch, and makes it lots easier to read texts that are received. If you exceed allotted number of texts for your plan, the cost is reasonable. I did not require emergency assistance, but knowing it was available was reassuring. I use it regularly for an emergency locator when hiking in the US. The ability to directly communicate with emergency response personnel is an extremely attractive feature. Battery life is great, light weight and small. It doesn’t necessarily require a smart phone for emergencies, but the smart phone makes it much easier to use, more comforting, and generally better.
