Product description

GU Original Sports Nutrition Energy Gel is the energy gel that started it all. In 1993, Dr. Bill Vaughn developed the world’s first energy gel to help his daughter perform better during ultra-marathons, and GU has been helping to propel the world’s most successful extreme athletes to success ever since. GU Energy Gel sustains all forms of athletic activity with a highly compact, portable, and calorie-dense packet that is loaded with carbohydrates that can be rapidly absorbed. Branched-chain amino acids limit muscle fiber damage and increase speed of recovery, and extra electrolytes help maintain water balance. Some flavors feature caffeine to increase concentration. While the original formula has been tweaked and evolved over the years, the end result is still the same: GU Energy Gels fuel the best endurance athletes in the world. GU Original Energy Gel comes in a wide variety of good tasting flavors. Each packet contains 450mg of Amino acids, 100 calories, and at least 21g total carbs.

The taste is consistent and having different flavour options and caffeinated and non-caffeinated. I also like that some gels have more sodium for warmer races and training. For the price and quality I think Gu can’t be beat, especially compared to other options like Maurten. I’ve tried a ton of different flavours and Gu’s have helped me train for all race distances.

    Great size of these; purchased these to help me when I'm on longer rides 50km+. Gave them a try as directed (5 minutes before starting) for a quick 25km ride to boost my energy. Before the ride, I was pretty tired; the gel got me going the entire trip without feeling tired. As others mentioned, it goes down with water... it is a gel texture, if you take it in small pieces it goes down easer and better that way for your stomach to take it.

    Used 2 and a half packs on ascent of Manaslu - 8163m in Nepal. I was afraid to use more as I did not know how my body will react to just eating sugar for more than 10h. Not sure they helped much but I did not get sick. Did not want to eat more as I was afraid I may get sick.
    At least I know few packs is safe for me per day. Even in the death zone. You need to know that over 7000m almost all digestion stops and over 8000m you cannot eat anything. Here basic sugars are important as they do not require digestion or such needs are almost zero.
