She knew. That's why Mom hadn't opened the door. She knew he was dead.

Twenty years as an army brat, and Ember Howard knew, too. The soldiers at the door meant her dad was never coming home. What she didn't know was how she would find the strength to singlehandedly care for her crumbling family when her mom falls apart. Then Josh Walker enters her life. Hockey star, her new next door neighbor, and not to mention he has the most delicious hands that insist on saving her over and over again.

He has a way of erasing the pain with a single look, a single touch. As much as she wants to turn off her feelings and endure the heartache on her own, she can't deny their intense attraction. Until Josh's secret shatters their world. And Ember must decide if he's worth the risk that comes with loving a man who could strip her bare.

Actually 4.5 but we can't do halvies

Oh my, what a beautiful and emotional book this is. I will be honest and confess though I’ve heard a lot of raves lately for NA books, I haven’t really paid them much attention thinking that at my advanced age I didn’t have much in common with the characters in the story. Well call me So Wrong Kristie!! (we must include both exclamation points.) This book has it all!
It starts out heartbreaking and stays that way throughout. December (or Ember as most people call her) has just had her world ruined. She, her mother, sister and younger brother have just found out that their father/husband, a doctor in the army, was killed in Afghanistan. Ember has to take over the family, her mother is too devastated to function and her younger sister, April, is acting out in not so good ways. August or Gus, her younger brother isn’t old enough to help her. The only one stepping is to help is Josh Taylor, Gus’s hockey coach and one time crush of Ember’s. She has known him since high school though was never part of his crowd. He was a top athlete, a bad boy and a chick magnet bar none. Plus April had a boyfriend. But that didn’t stop her from watching him with lust in her heart.

He is everything that her boyfriend isn’t during this difficult time. And as if things aren’t difficult enough for Ember, she discovers something devastating about her boyfriend of 3 years, something that makes her evaluate her entire life. She had been planning on going back to school some distance away, but between the shock of what she learns of her boyfriend and the fact her mother isn’t showing much signs of coming out of her deep, deep mourning, Amber can’t go back and transfers to the local college, though she does move out of the house and several miles away and moves in with a friend.
And Josh, who is attending the same college, lets her know that he feels a lot more for her than just friendship. But there are so many issues to overcome before she can make him any kind of commitment. She is discovering what a truly wonderful man he is. Besides being patient, understanding, knowing when to give her space and when to be there, he s drop dead gorgeous, but because of all that Amber is going through, she’s very gun shy about offering him hope. Her boyfriend really did a number on her, she’s overwhelmed by responsibility and there is Josh’s well deserved reputation as a player. She sends him mixed signals. She will let the relationship go so far, then she pulls back and then she does it again and again.

What makes this book such a gut wrenching read is how well the author tells the story. This is a first person book, written entirely from Amber’s POV so what she feels, the author makes us feel. Because we are in her head we get to really know and admire her for doing what she needs to do without any self pity. We understand how complicated her feelings toward Josh are. She is still a very young person, only 20 and she has a great deal of responsibility thrust upon her in the middle of her own loss of her beloved father.
She finally does let Josh into her life when she finds out something about him that could completely derail the relationship. As you can tell, I really like Amber.
And Josh, of my goodness I want to be 20 again and have a Josh of my own. The patience, the humor, the understanding he shows Amber is amazing. The author does a marvelous job of letting us see Josh’s emotions, his love and longing for Amber, his pain towards the end of the book where he sees something and misunderstands and things are in danger of falling apart for the two of them and then his strength when it seems they have reached an impasse in their relationship even though it’s clear that they truly need and love each other to be happy. Though normally I would have troubles believing a relationship between two such young people would be lasting, but I have not a shadow of a doubt that these two will love each other forever. This is a very emotional and poignant book and a few times the back of my throat started to hurt like it does in the sad part of a movie.

The only thing keeping this from being a 5 out of 5 book is it’s told entirely from Ember’s POV. Many of the books I read these days written in first person or third person will have parts of the book from the hero’s POV. I would have liked actually read Josh’s thoughts. In the grand scheme of things though and how much I thought of this book, it’s a small thing. But I was looking at the other books in this series and it looks as though the last book, Hallowed Ground is a continuation of their story and it’s told from both POV. I have two others to get through before that one and I’ve already purchased Eyes Turned Skywise.

Full Measure has been read and received very high grades from quite a few readers. Well add me to that list now too.

The book starts off with a tragedy for the family, December's dad dies over in war and her family needs her as their mom just shuts down. December has to put her life on hold, then she is meet with another heartbreaking incident.
Josh, her crush from high school starts spending time with her and she realizes he's not such a jerk after all.
I have to say I loved both December and Josh right from the beginning and I loved reading about them become friends and more. They have their ups and downs and I won't say how it ends but I loved the book.
Can't wait for the next book in this series.

December is an original character and she behaves in a refreshing way, she doesn’t want the knight in shining armor to save her and it’s clear from her actions, not only her words.

The writing is good though, and the different situations are nicely described and you really feel in the middle of the scene..I spent the last 80 pages with tears in my eyes..

However, I lost interest somewhere between page 70 and 200..there didn’t seem to be a proper plot holding the book together, with different events and revelations quite unrelated to each other, were the only purpose was to see how the protagonists react and move around the events. Clearly the basic plot is meant to be the journey of December and Josh getting together while she goes through her grief, but I got bored during the middle section of the book.

Lovely pace, lovely well rounded characters and a beautiful writing style make this an easy favourite in the realm of romance. It was also a journey into families and love and one that worked really well as the author has a way with words when it comes to emotional situations. Throw in some spice and you have some really good reading.

One of the first things about this book that grabbed my attention when I began reading were the names for the children, December 'Ember', April, and August 'Gus'. I thought this was quirky, cute, and definitly makes the characters memorable.
Within the first few pages it feels like your heart has been torn from your body, stamped all over, and then put back again. It is so heartbreakingly sad and I sobbed my heart out with big ugly crying. While I was wiping away the tears I loved getting to see how Ember is with Gus, how caring and thoughtful she is to her younger brother, and those who have younger siblings can probably agree with me that they can be very annoying at times, and after they receive the devastating news, how strong she is to keep her family going while trying not to break down herself.

Riley is a complete and utter hypocritical ass, from the moment he is mentioned, added with his lack of support for Ember, I knew I wasn't going to be impressed with him. Kayla, Ember's so called friend, what a friend you don't need or want around, and if she is a friend I would love to see what enemies do to Ember. Kayla is just as bad as Riley and I was happy to see Ember close the door on their friendship no matter how much it hurt her to do it.
Josh *sigh* I think we all need a Josh in our lives. His secret wasn't what I was expecting, and I do feel sorry for how Ember discovers it, but in all honesty although I can see her side of the story it could have been a lot worse than it was. Yes he made a HUGE mistake in keeping this from her, but he did it to protect her, and I think this is his only failing. He is sweet, romantic, polite, and generally an all round nice HOT character.
Sam is a great antidote for Ember, and she helps Ember see some facts that she really needed to see. She is there as a friend when Ember needed one, a shoulder to cry on, a person to have fun with on girly nights, and a supportive person that doesn't let Ember wallow too much.

I loved every page of Full Measures and read it in one sitting, I even gave up a caffeine fix so I could concentrate entirely on the book, considering I could quite happily live with a caffeine drip then you know how addicted I am to it, and how much I must have loved Full Measures to give up on my caffeine.

The emotions are real and hard hitting and make Full Measures that much more powerful. They draw you in fast and hard into the pages and you don't want to stop reading, no matter how much your heart feels like its been stomped all over, or how hard it is to read through the tears pouring like Niagara Falls from your eyes, or how much you want to throw the book away either from anger or from the sexual tension.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Full Measures" gave full measure...

"Full Measures" by Rebecca Yarros has been on my TBR list for months and when I was approved on NetGalley to read and review the author's second novel, I wondered if the two books were related. For those who don't know me, I have this habit of reading books in order in a series, even if they can be read as standalones. While the two books may not be officially be part of a series, I decided to go ahead and buy this one and pre-ordered the other one when they went on sale on 鶹 during Black Friday and I am SO glad I did! I'll reiterate this when I wrap up this review but it needs to be said right now: I loved, loved, LOVED this book! ♥

Twenty-year-old December "Ember" Howard has known what life in a military family is like but nothing prepares her for the three knocks on their front door, signaling the arrival of two men in uniform who have brought the most devastating news imaginable to a family like theirs. Life as they know it comes to a complete stop and she's left to hold everyone together when she sees that her mother has been swallowed up by grief and is barely able to function. The one person she thought she could lean on, her longtime boyfriend, is distracted and doesn't provide the support she needs. Then she unexpectedly crosses paths with her high school crush and being with him just feels right.

Twenty-three-year-old Joshua "Josh" Walker has always been known for his prowess on the ice and most people remember him for being a star hockey player. Nowadays, he plays for his college team and coaches a group of young kids that includes August "Gus" Howard, the youngest of the Howard siblings. When he witnesses Ember Howard's meltdown at the local grocery, his simple act of kindness belies the true nature of his affection for her, especially since he first noticed her when they were both in high school. He offers to be whatever it is Ember needs and while the attraction between them is palpable, he wants to make sure that anything more will be about them and he's willing to wait.

Ember can't seem to help herself whenever Josh is around but she doesn't want to drag him into what she feels is the current miserable state of her life. Josh never pressures her and merely makes sure that he's there whenever she may need him. When their feelings evolve into love, things appear to be going in the right direction and Ember finally feels as if everything in her life is working out. Then, a secret Josh has been keeping comes to light and Ember is taken aback by what exactly it is he's been keeping from her. While Josh feels their love will see them through, Ember isn't prepared to deal with the implications of Josh's secret. To quote a popular love song from the early nineties, "Sometimes love just ain't enough."

This book had me tearing up within the first two chapters and then again when Ember read the letter her father left for her. I loved reading about Ember's family and how they were trying to deal with the unimaginable loss of the head of their household in different ways. Then there's the love story aspect and that was just...goodness, I'm actually smiling like a loon while typing this, remembering what happened between Josh and Ember. What they had just felt like it was meant to be but even after the episode in the cabin, nothing was rushed or forced and that's what gave their relationship this realness. These two were just perfect for each other but they did have their struggles, helping to solidify what they had.

I can now fully understand and appreciate why "Full Measures" received the high ratings and glowing reviews it did earlier this year. Even though it's a new adult (NA) novel, I feel that it can be appreciated by almost any age group that reads it. This was about love for family and truly falling in love with someone for the first time. It was about self and sacrifice, putting the needs of others before your own but also being able to prioritize yourself in order to live the life that you want. It was about recognizing when something, or rather, someone is worth fighting for and setting your own fears aside to go after what or who you want. I'm giving this latest addition to my favorites list five-plus stars and highly recommend it. ♥
