I was hesitant to purchase this item because of other reviews, but as a techie I decided to go ahead anyway. The product did not disappoint, it supported the full 18W USB-C PD (Power Delivery) charging speed claimed on the product listing. This was observed by testing the item with a voltmeter (cables and voltmeter not included).

To achieve the 18W charging speed full sun was needed; and the smartphone also has to negotiate the faster charging speed, which often occurs when a smartphone is between 30-50% charged. Keep in mind smartphones will purposely negotiate slower charging speeds at different stages of the charging process as a way of preserving battery health.

I angled the panels towards the sun and connected the phone being charged (android Pixel 5), time of day was around 9AM, when the sun moved behind the clouds charging speed dropped to around 4.5V 0.8A which is to be expected with the sun’s rays being blocked by the clouds, either way the phone continued charging.

I purchased this to take camping, to charge some pocket sized power banks during the day, which would allow for charging the smartphones at night. Consider keeping the item you are charging in a shady location with airflow to assist with heat dissipation. The solar panels need sun, but your device would prefer to stay cool to avoid overheating. Depending on your setup, placing your device behind a tilted solar panel could be an opportune spot, however; consider using the included carabiners to anchor the solar panels; should the wind hook the panels, it could topple your device along with it, as well as no longer be facing the sun for charging.

Update to the review below: Flex Solar contacted me and offer to replace the product. Kudos to that. moving from one star to four.

The panel has great construction however the junction box may have issues. I mostly use USD c and A, however I have also tested the DC. For the first two weeks after purchase I saw the type c USB reaching peaks of 38 watts chagrin my INIU 60W input power bank. In full sun the output varied from 24 to 28 watts. However after 40 minutes it would drop to 18W and would stay there.

After another two weeks, the type c PD would only output 17 watts under full sun conditions, and never saw anything above that.

Two weeks later USB type C port ceased to work at all! Type A and DC still work but this is garbage. It stop working the same day my product return window closed. I now have to deal with FlexSolar department, and by the likes of the reviews, I might have a hard time getting this fixed.

This product, its construction, portability and power, its great, only if it worked.

I had Anker 21W panel before and get this one as an upgrade since it has twice wattage. My main reason for upgrade was that I mostly don't have direct soon in the bush, so 40W panel theoretically should give me more power than 20W one when in shadow. I use it for camping trips, and it charges phones and power banks. I didn't run all detailed tests, just measured it with cheap USB meter - but in full sun it gives me 2A for USB A port. I measured USB-C with my phone and I got over 2A. When this panel is in shadow it still produce electricity, at least power banks are charging but I guess not as fast. The only improvement it need in my opinion is a pocket to keep cables and protect controller, so I glued piece of plastic at the back of the panel to keep controller off the ground and store usb cables.
