- Reviewed in Canada on May 24, 2013Verified PurchaseIts not surprising that I love this game, as a Fire Emblem fan, I'm always tickled pink when a title comes to North America. But I think this title has a little of everything for everyone, as long as they're willing to try a strategy RPG (SRPG). But for those who are not convinced, here is some information on the game.
Gameplay: First you can choose the difficulty setting, normal, hard, lunatic. While FE is famous for perma death, in this game you may opt out of it by picking casual mode, instead of classic. Battle are turned based and happen on a grid, with your units pitted against the enemies, in standard FE fare, but in this game, there is an infinite possiblity for grinding between chapters (ie main game battles). In this installement, you may not rescue your units, but you can be pairing up for statistical bonuses, you can place your units on contiguous positions on the grids for the chance of an assist, either in the form of an extra attack or in helping a unit dodge the incoming attack. These may also happen with higher probability during a pairing, especially with high support rank. The Streetpass lets you also pit your best team against friends or strangers.
Story: The story is alright, it's not a great departure from the classic plots of RPG, but it is adequate to pull the player through the different stages of the game. It is the characters that lend the story the appeal it has.
Cast of characters: This is one of the strong points of the series, interactions, better than usual because support conversations are not a fixed number by character. This game does not disappoint, as the assortument of oddball characters is there, but you have a good main in the person of earnest Chrom, and it is interesting to join the group as the character you design. The cast is fun, and the number of interactions is higher than ever, especially considering you will want to have your units woo one another. Most of the support conversations are interesting at least, and it is great that they're not as difficult to pursue as in previous installments. Which lets you enjoy them all the more, because they're not limited as in Sacred Stones and a few others, if memory serves.
Graphics and visuals: Not only do the fighting character models appear in 3D during battles as in RD and PoR, but the story scenes use 3D models, rendered in the 3DS 3D, and it is rather well done. The game is still very beautiful to watch without 3D, and because that mode is clearer, it is easier to play in places where the light might not otherwise allow you to see the darker 3D display. The sprites for the overhead view of the maps are small, and the zoom only has three modes, so for me they're only easily distinguishable from one another on the biggest zoom, but that view is useless during your turn. So that's a point they could improve on. Also the critical hits are no longer animated, they are replaced with a static close-up image of the character who then proceeds to hit the opposing unit. The art is different than previous FE installments, it's still anime style, but a little more modern, with considerable details.
Chapters and Maps: With the more than 15 paralogues and the DLC xenologues, and the main quest 25 or so chapters the game is probably the longest FE campaign to come to be localised to North America. The game lets you pit your forces There are already a good dozen of DLC Xenologues ranging from easy to very difficult
Classes, promotions, and Class change: Units come with a type of job, it is called their class. But as soon as that unit reaches level 10 it can be promoted to a higher class, or it can change its class to learn another skill set. The skills are back too, and they are gained once a unit reaches level 10 of a base class or level 5 and 15 of a promoted class. This system, though rather simple, is a lot of fun especially when your offspring units gain skills inherited from their parents' skillset, which you can influence by marrying this or that unit together, and assigning which skills get passed on to the offspring.
All in all, this is an excellent FE title, as it tweaks the formula, takes advantage of the 3DS capabilities in the esthetic department but also in terms of connectivity, by adding the possiblity for quite a bit of extra content (for an additional fee, but each map comes at 2,50$ or 3$ at time of writing, and they're all completely optional,). Mostly, I think this game introduces modifications that are meant to appeal to a wider fan base, and some that change the mechanic to challenge the old fans, which is not unwelcome.
An excellent game.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 26, 2014Verified PurchaseFire Emblem is probably my favourite gaming franchise and definitely the one I buy each installment of most loyally (it was in fact a major reason why I wanted a 3DS in the first place and the first game that I bought when I got one), but even I can admit that the quality throughout the series has varied heavily from game to game. I know a lot of other people who've been playing Fire Emblem for as long as I have were disappointed in this game, but honestly it slots easily into my top three in the franchise. The characters are instantly likeable, the plot while predictable is engaging, the second generation mechanic is tons of fun, and all the throwbacks to previous games are awesome. Fire Emblem's basic game play never changes a heck of a lot between generations or between consoles so these elements absolutely make the game.
I also know the game has got a lot of flack for things like "casual mode" (i.e. you can choose for deaths to no longer be permanent) and the return of the map system (thus allowing grinding between chapters), but these elements are entirely optional and there's nothing stopping you from playing without using them (although if Lunatic+ mode isn't difficult enough for you even with these crutches around, I don't know what to say). And considering that they make the game more accessible to first timers and this could very well have been where Fire Emblem ended, I can't bring myself to complain.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 13, 2014Verified PurchaseI went into this game expecting the gameplay and quality levels of the Fire Emblem game on the original DS that I played for a weekend trip to Boston a couple years ago on my sister's DS. What I ended up getting was a much deeper, rich, and engaging experience. The story is okay, it's enough to keep you going, but the gameplay and combat is brilliant. The support feature that is now a staple of Fire Emblem games is present, but it goes beyond what previous titles did. Not only do you gain stat boosts from managing relationships with your units, but this leads to the creation of new units once certain pairs reach S rank.
I found myself trying to combine characters not only for the best combination but also that fit best with the story. The interactions between characters had me laughing at times as well as cringing from cheesy moments. All in all, a great game that I definitely recommend to any fan of the series or anyone who loves turn based tactical combat games.
I'm definitely purchasing DLC as I was sad to see the game end.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 4, 2015Verified PurchaseAmazing game, I loved it. Always been a fire emblem fan so my opinion may be biased, but this game is definitely a must try, difficulty can even be set so it fine for new comers as well. Gave it a 4* because there's this bug for the voice settings, its no problem if you want them in English but I prefer them in Japanese. Anyways the bug is that once you set it to Japanese, you play for a while and its fine, however once you reset the game the voices are reset back to English even if the voice settings is Japanese and to fix it you need to set it back to English then back to Japanese but this gets really annoying after having to do this multiple times. But aside from that the game is amazing.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 4, 2023Verified PurchaseI bought the game used because I feared getting the UAE version. It is authentic and includes everything that was supposed to be in the box. Box is a bit torn but I have noticed that happens with ease to 3DS Boxes so I do forgive it. Nice game!
- Reviewed in Canada on March 23, 2023Verified PurchaseJust like the headline. Total rip off in price and compatibility. Pictures in listing do not depict this as the UAE/Saudi/Malaysian version. I was expecting (and paid the price of) a NA version. DO NOT BUY.
The bad reviews are getting filitered out, make sure to check the review pics while you still can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente juego!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Answer for the question posted above, and feedback for the game.
Verified PurchaseIn response to the question above, the cartridge I received was marked for the regions of U.A.E, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Singapore and it worked for my North American (NTSC) 3DS system, so it may not be compatible with PAL. It also did not contain any Club Nintendo codes, perhaps because of the regions it is marked for.
As far as the review is concerned, Fire Emblem: Awakening has great gameplay with an interesting storyline and characters, which will keep you occupied for hours on end without making it boring, and it is definitely worth a purchase. Looking forward to future games in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome game!
Verified PurchaseI was quite surprised when I played the game. I thought it would be an easy tactics game.
No. It isn't.
The difficulty settings is fantastic! Lunatic mode is impossible for me. The classic mode was brutal. But this game is fantastic for people who are looking for a challenge. It's like a game of chess!
Once I finished this game, I woukd love to buy more of this series.
