Purchase options and add-ons
Don’t just see the sights—get to know the people.
The people of this land of white summer nights and pristine lakes are famous for their sisu, a form of enterprising stoicism. They are survivors: if you were stranded on a desert island, your ideal companion would be a Finn. Before you knew it, the sauna would be ready, fishhooks positioned, a fire burning, and any edible berries picked and prepared for eating. Shaped by the harsh physical beauty around them, the Finns can be melancholy, yet have a great sense of humor. Their music is often in the minor key, but they love to dance, sing, and perform. They cherish their traditions, from name days to near-pagan rituals, yet they are great innovators.
Culture Smart! Finland describes the historical, geographical, and cultural influences that have shaped the Finnish psyche, and guides you through the working and social lives of the Finns today, offering you a deeper, more rewarding experience of this beautiful land.
Have a richer and more meaningful experience abroad through a better understanding of the local culture. Chapters on history, values, attitudes, and traditions will help you to better understand your hosts, while tips on etiquette and communicating will help you to navigate unfamiliar situations and avoid faux pas.

Culture Smart! guides are written for people who want more than just the nuts and bolts of where to stay, what to see, and how to travel. Short, sharp and humorous, they deal with the richly rewarding human dimension of foreign travel by telling you about the beliefs and attitudes of the people you will meet and about situations you may encounter. They help you to understand what makes people tick, the values they live by, and the kind of behavior that will be reciprocated with goodwill and hospitality.
Each guide includes concise chapters on the local customs, traditions and values of the country's inhabitants, and crucially, the key historical and cultural events that have shaped them. There are sections on social and business etiquette, tips on communication, both verbal and non-verbal, and advice on how to be a good guest.
Our aim is to arm readers with a level of cultural fluency, so that whatever your reason for travelling, each situation may be approached with both confidence and sensitivity.
Brief and thorough, our guides are designed so that they can be dipped into for quick reference as and when needed, or comfortably completed in a few sittings, affording you a comprehensive overview of what you're getting yourself into before you have even taken off!
Written by long-term expats, journalists, professors and diplomats, Culture Smart! guides have been helping travelers be more than just tourists for over 20 years. With over 100 country guides to date, there are new titles and editions published every year.
Marcel Proust once said, The true voyage of discovery lies not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. We hope that Culture Smart! will help you arrive at your destination with your eyes open.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great deal of information about Finland
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThere’s not a lot out there about Finland, and as a granddaughter of a woman who came here in 1904, I wanted to learn more. This is one of the few books I found online.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and interesting.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseStarter books for overview in learning about the Nordic countries. Netherlands is next. Not sure if I’ll get to Iceland but Culture Smart Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark were all informative & interesting.
Also enjoyed “The Year of Living Danishly” by Helen Russell (great sense of humor) & Why The Dutch are Different by Ben Coates.
Look forward to reading Culture Smart The Netherlands, but it arrived after I had started reading “The Nordic Theory of Everything” In Search of a Better Life by Anu Partanen. Only 100 pages in and I’ve had so many ah ha moments. My armchair travel through the Nordic countries has been a wonderful experience. Short of traveling there, which is not within my budget, these books have satisfied my curiosity. I think they really are on to something special as a society pulling together for the greater good. Moving on to armchair travel to Japan soon.
