How to Use a Fingertip Pulse Oximeter Correctly

Preparing Your Finger Before Measurement

Keep Your Finger Warm: Ensure your finger is warm. If it feels cold, rub your hands together or soak them in warm water, then dry thoroughly. Cold fingers with poor peripheral circulation may result in lower readings, failure to detect a signal, or delayed response.

Remove Obstructions: Completely remove nail polish (especially dark colors like black, blue, or purple), gel manicures, and artificial nails. These block light and can cause significantly lower or inaccurate readings.

Ensure the device has sufficient battery power and that you are in a calm, relaxed state. Place your hand on a table or your knee, keeping it roughly level with your heart. Fully relax your arm and hand muscles. Remain still during measurement—do not talk, shake your arm, or move your fingers.

Note: Do not use the oximeter during physical exercise, as readings will be unstable. Wait 10-20 minutes after exercise until your body has rested before measuring.
