Gr. 4-7. Because this is a "Harry Potterless" year, kids in need of a fix may find it in these two volumes. The conceit is that these are Harry's schoolbooks (Fantastic Beasts, by Newt Scamander; Quidditch, by Kennilworthy Whisp), with margin notes by Harry and pal Ron Weasley. The concept breaks down in the introductions: Professor Dumbledore explains that the books are being offered to muggles (because the proceeds of the books are going to British charity Comic Relief, a disclosure that will raise the eyebrows of any reader who undestands the importance of secrecy in the wizard world. Nevertheless, a lot of effort has gone into making these seem like real textbooks. The jackets look torn and faded, the print is (annoyingly) small, and the information is well detailed. Illustrations are in short supply, and not every fan will want to know this much about Quidditch and imaginary beasts, especially when the text is so hard to read. Buy several copies (the money really does go to charity), but expect a few disappointed readers. REVWR

About the authors
J.K. Rowling is the author of the enduringly popular, era-defining Harry Potter book series, as well as several stand-alone novels for adults and children, and a bestselling crime fiction series written under the pen name Robert Galbraith.
The Harry Potter books have now sold over 600 million copies worldwide, been translated into 85 languages and made into eight blockbuster films. They continue to be discovered and loved by new generations of readers.
Alongside the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling also wrote three short companion volumes for charity: Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in aid of Comic Relief, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard, in aid of her international children¡¯s charity, Lumos. The companion books and original series are all available as audiobooks.
In 2016, J.K. Rowling collaborated with playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany to continue Harry¡¯s story in a stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which opened in London, and is now thrilling audiences on four continents. The script book was published to mark the plays opening in 2016 and instantly topped the bestseller lists.
In the same year, she made her debut as a screenwriter with the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Inspired by the original companion volume, it was the first in a series of new adventures featuring wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander. The second, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, was released in 2018 and the third, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore was released in 2022.
The screenplays were published to coincide with each film¡¯s release: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - The Original Screenplay (2016), Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay (2018) and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore - The Complete Screenplay (2022).

J.K. Rowling¡¯s fairy tale for younger children, The Ickabog, was serialised for free online for children during the Covid-19 pandemic in the summer of 2020 and is now published as a book illustrated by children, with her royalties going to her charitable trust, Volant, to benefit charities helping alleviate social deprivation and assist vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.
Her latest children¡¯s novel The Christmas Pig, published in 2021, is a standalone adventure story about a boy¡¯s love for his most treasured thing and how far he will go to find it.
J.K. Rowling also writes novels for adults. The Casual Vacancy was published in 2012 and adapted for television in 2015. Under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, she is the author of the highly acclaimed ¡®Strike¡¯ crime series, featuring private detective Cormoran Strike and his partner Robin Ellacott. The first of these, The Cuckoo¡¯s Calling, was published to critical acclaim in 2013, at first without its author¡¯s true identity being known. The Silkworm followed in 2014, Career of Evil in 2015, Lethal White in 2018, Troubled Blood in 2020 and The Ink Black Heart in 2022. The series has also been adapted for television by the BBC and HBO.
J.K. Rowling¡¯s 2008 Harvard Commencement speech was published in 2015 as an illustrated book, Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination, sold in aid of Lumos and university-wide financial aid at Harvard.
As well as receiving an OBE and Companion of Honour for services to children¡¯s literature, J.K. Rowling has received many other awards and honours, including France¡¯s Legion d¡¯Honneur, Spain¡¯s Prince of Asturias Award and Denmark¡¯s Hans Christian Andersen Award.
J.K. Rowling supports a number of causes through her charitable trust, Volant. She is also the founder and president of Lumos, an international children¡¯s charity fighting for every child¡¯s right to a family by transforming care systems around the world.

Newton Artemis Fido "Newt" Scamander is the fictional author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, born in 1897. According to the "About the Author" section of the book, Scamander became a magizoologist because of his own interest in fabulous beasts and the encouragement of his mother, an enthusiastic Hippogriff breeder. In Hogwarts, he was sorted to Hufflepuff house.
After graduating from Hogwarts, Scamander joined the Ministry of Magic in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. His career included a brief stint in the Office of House-elf Relocation, a transfer to the Beast Division, the creation of the Werewolf Register in 1947, the 1965 passage of the Ban on Experimental Breeding, and many research trips for the Dragon Research and Restraint Bureau. His contributions to Magizoology earned him an Order of Merlin, Second Class in 1979.
Now retired, he lives in Dorset with his wife Porpentina and their pet "Kneazles": Hoppy, Milly and Mauler. He has a grandson named Rolf, who married Luna Lovegood some time after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Lovely artwork and interesting new beasts. Great for Harry Potter fans, though I can¡¯t recommend this book to non-Potter fans for it¡¯s little more than a textbook. 9/10 :)

Obviously not a novel just a fantasy ¡°educational¡± book from the Harry Potter series. Love all the side notes. Can¡¯t wait to add it to my Harry Potter collection! Very happy for the price I paid in comparison to they newer edition that is too cartoony looking in my opinion (as the new edition was more expensive).

- Reviewed in Canada on October 10, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseAs a proper muggle born fanboy, I was required to purchase a copy of this book as Professor Dumbledore declared in the foreword that ¡°no wizarding household is complete without a copy of this book.¡± While I usually get all my wizarding books from Flourish and Botts, tickets to Diagon Alley were sold out, so I figured Â鶹Çø would do. A snowy delivery owl dawning the Â鶹Çø logo was quick to swoosh in and drop off a copy at my door. I guess they must still be working out the kinks of drone delivery.
I enjoyed this book a lot, it can't hold a candle to the original chronicle, but it's a fantasy complement to the fantasy world. You need only read a part of the foreword to be convinced to read the book. Also a great complement to the fun first Fantastic Beats film. Felt a bit short and pictures of each beast would've been awesome, but still worth a quick read.

- Reviewed in Canada on October 9, 2014Verified PurchaseI've been wanting to get all of this extra Harry Potter universe related books for a while. I used to own Beetle the Barb but who knows where that went. Those books are an amazing treat for any Harry Potter fan who wishes to go back to that universe again and maybe feel like you've just purchased your first school book.
In the book, you will find great art and scattered notes from Ron (I guess that's his copy, oups!) It was a great surprise and it warms the heart.
Great buy.

Only minor issue really, is that it's too thin. Would've been great to have more pages of this.
Also the cover isn't as bright red as the image on this website. It's actually a tad bit darker. Not a deal breaker for me though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good brief encyclopedia
Verified PurchaseI bought this book because I wanted to practice my English and also learn something more about the Hogwarts universe. It's very important to say this is not the movie book but the compendium of all animals that appear in the movie.
