- Reviewed in Canada on November 27, 2017Verified PurchaseFaber-Castell Polychromos is a beautiful artist quality coloured pencil set. The down-side, they are a expensive, and the 12 pack set is limited in its colour selection so I had no choice but to purchase additional colours open stock. With that said, all the main colours are included, and these pencils are delightful to work with.
I am currently in the search for the perfect coloured pencils and I have purchased the main brands and their water soluble counter-parts- Prismacolor Premier (****), Derwent Color-soft (*** 1/2), Derwent Inktense (), Staedtler Mars Triangular (*** 1/2), Staedtler Ergosoft (**** 1/2), Staedtler Karat Aquarell (), Stabilo ALL (*** 1/2), and I will even include the sub-par Crayola brand (*) here. All have their pros and cons; as expected, the pricier ones - usually artist grade pencils, are the better products with some exceptions, and the Polychromos are becoming my favourite. Although I still like the Prismacolor due to the range of colours available, its smooth application, and much lower price point (in Canada), the Polychromos are just as soft, velvety, with beautiful, vibrant pigments. Another plus and this sets it apart from the Prismacolors: these are durable due to a slightly thicker pencil. Their rich pigments blend and layer well, mixes well with other brands, leaves no wax bloom, and you are able to get a sharp edge with very minimal breakage. If you are not on a budget and can afford these sets (I recommend the larger sets), these are highly recommended for artists of all ages and skillsets- although they may be a bit pricey for the students/artists on a budget.
The only colour where other brands gave the Polychromos a run for their money is the black. This is where I found the Prismacolor edged out the Polychromos slightly (although all take a back seat to the exquisitely black Stabilo ALL). Still the Faber-Castell Polychromos is a high quality pencil set; creamy smooth laydown/application, vibrant, professional output, great durability, and dynamic colour selection (their largest set is 120 colours). These will enhance all of your coloured pencil art pieces. Love them.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 15, 2025Verified PurchaseGreat pencils! Definitely worth the cost.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 16, 2020Verified PurchaseExcellent pencils. I bought the 12 set first at about $26 and was suprised just how sharp and clean they coloured. I had used Prismacolor up until that time and they are a very soft pencil and definitely not as clean to work with as these. Eventually saw a good price online for the full set from an art store in Edmonton, with tax and shipping they were less expensive than I saw elsewhere. They are overwhelming to use.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 20, 2018Verified PurchaseVery nice coloured pencils. Work well, easy to blend.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 6, 2024Verified PurchaseI guess the cores of polychromos don’t break as easily as that of the prismacolor premier pencils, but on paper, I see absolutely no difference.* (see further comment below) I have a large set of prismacolor pencils, and bought this small set of polychromos to see if it were worthwhile changing, and I conclude, no, it’s not worthwhile changing. The only problem is prismacolor is no longer open stock in Canada. If you find some open stock it’s just because they haven’t sold them all yet from their warehouse. Once it’s depleted, there’ll be no more open stock. So, that’s a downside to prismacolor over these Faber-castell pencils. I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. Also, with the 12 set, you can get 144 colours, as you see in the chart I did. The butterfly was done with this 12-pack. I don’t claim to be an artist because I don’t do professional work, and I don’t do art on commission either. I work at it for my own relaxation (or frustration 😑) !
* Maybe I shouldn’t say “no difference”, because the FC pencils are a little harder, so you can get a fine line without those minuscule pieces you can get from PC pencils—example, the antennas in the butterfly here.

- Reviewed in Canada on September 7, 2022Verified PurchaseThe only downside is the high price
- Reviewed in Canada on November 10, 2023Verified PurchaseAlthough these are more expensive, they are well worth it. They have a harder lead that holds a point nicely. They do take a bit of learning as they are a more professional quality. Got this set as a trial & will be slowly adding more colors. The open stock makes it easier to do.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 9, 2017Verified PurchaseThese must be some of the best coloured pencils out there. They are creamy smooth and soft. The colours are bright and they sharpen well. The only down side is the price but I guess you get what you pay for.

5.0 out of 5 stars bom custo benefício

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Verified PurchaseHad always wanted to own the these and got the set of 12. The pleasure received from using these were not less than that anticipated. Loved up to it. I had a Derwent colorsoft set of 72 prior to buying this.
What I liked the most was the even spread of color and pressure.
