Castell 9000 # Pencils - It's the standard for pencils.
It was launched by Count Alexander Faber Castell in 1905 and has been loved by many artists and illustrators since then.
The wood shank and core are fully bonded to the SV method, so it is very difficult to break.

    This review is coming from having finished the last of these pencils and am now currently ordering my next set. These were a treat to use. They're not the best pencil I've used (that goes to the Uni Mitsubishi pencils) but the best pencil I've ever used was only darker and smoother than these pencils by just a little margin. I consider this, like most artistic-grade graphite to be very comparable. It's just that the Uni Mitsubishi pencils come out on top just barely. These pencils lay down graphite as well as a lot of the other artistic-grade pencils. It's also very smooth, almost wax-like. I never feel like the pencils scratch some of the more delicate papers I use.

    However, this is set apart from other pencils because of its break resistance. I don't know why, but if I apply a lot of pressure (which you shouldn't because you can always just use a darker pencil to lay down darker tones), it doesn't break nearly as much as other pencils.

    I actually sharpen my pencils with a retractable knife and a sanding pad. It can be easy to accidentally cut into the graphite if you carve too hard. However, I've never once accidentally cut into the graphite because of how soft the wood is to cut. It makes sure that I don't use too much pressure when I'm lobbing off some of the wood.

    Overall, this is a very affordable set that's perfect for sketching and shading.

    pretty good. Similar to Staedler (sp?). I could overlay multiple layers of pencil shadings using different pencil to create dark and light tones. I used it on medium bristle board. It smudges rather easily though. 8B is dark but not as dark as carbon pencils though.
