Product description
A salute to writers and expatriates, Wes Anderson’s tenth feature takes the form of the final edition of The French Dispatch, a weekly magazine chronicling life in the city of Ennui-sur-Blasé, France (for American readers). Made up of three featured stories—a profile of a tortured artist, a report on student revolutionaries, and a recounting of a tabloid kidnapping with a gourmet twist—plus an obituary and a travelogue, this dazzlingly constructed anthology mixes everything from theatrical interludes to tableaux vivants to comic-book animation. The superb ensemble cast includes Adrien Brody, Timothée Chalamet, Benicio Del Toro, Frances McDormand, Léa Seydoux, Owen Wilson, and Jeffrey Wright. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 4K digital master supervised and approved by director Wes Anderson, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack • One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features • Audio commentary featuring Anderson and collaborators Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman • Selected-scene storyboard animatic • Behind the Scenes of “The French Dispatch” • Visual essay featuring the writing of film scholar David Bordwell, read by Rupert Friend • Episode of The New Yorker Radio Hour featuring Anderson, New Yorker editor David Remnick, and actor Jeffrey Wright • Interview with artist Sandro Kopp, who created Moses Rosenthaler’s paintings in the film • Music video for “Aline” by Jarvis Cocker, directed by Anderson and illustrated by Javi Aznarez • “The French Dispatch” Reads the “New Yorker” (and Other Magazines), featuring Wright and actors Bill Murray, Stephen Park, Elisabeth Moss, Owen Wilson, Frances McDormand, and Tilda Swinton reading excerpts from classic magazine pieces • “The French Dispatch”: Miniature Unit Berlin and Accidentally Angoulême, shorts about the making of the film • Trailer • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing • PLUS: An essay by critic Richard Brody; excerpts from the limited-edition magazine issue of The French Dispatch, published to promote the film, including historical and production dispatches by writer Alex Pasternack and further-reading recommendations from Anderson; and a poster by Aznarez featuring the French Dispatch magazine covers created for the film

- Reviewed in Canada on January 25, 2022Verified PurchaseIt has all the usual ingredients. I like these films but for some reason I found the student section in the middle long, drawn out and boring. The final sequence pulls it back up. Lots to look at with many Easter eggs in sets. Unlike other Wes flicks I doubt I will watch this twice. Maybe to give the student storyline a second try. If you’re a fan it’s worth the watch.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 20, 2022Verified PurchaseI I am a Wes Anderson fan, and you need to be to enjoy this movie. It is visually so rich and dense that I could watch it several times and not see everything that is happening in some of the complex scenes where the trolley moves the camera across several adjacent rooms. Same applies to the dialogue which is fast and constant. I loved the references to Jacque Tatie, Godard, and other French film makers and to the various New Yorker writers who are the inspiration of the reporters here. My problem is that I am only moderately proficient at the French language so at times I was not able to keep up. This was made more difficult because when I ordered it and it started it was all in French. I did not order it in French and did not realize until others told me after that the original is in French and English and I could have changed the language setting and seen it this way. Live and learn I suppose. Still, I understood most of it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It will help to read about the basis of the movie in advance. It won't give it away but will help set
up what is happening ☺️.
Certainly not a standard movie but deeply interesting to those tired of standard characters.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 15, 2022Verified PurchaseI am feeling robbed of a few hours of my life I will never get back.....one of the most boring ,disjointed pieces of crap it's ever been my misfortune to watch. I can't believe they got so many big name actors to participate in this trash. If there's such a thing as a BOX OFFICE these days ,this movie would have tanked in the first week. I found it literally PAINFUL to watch to the end. I was hoping for some revelation in the ending to have it all make sense....sadly there was none. In closing if my commentary has saved some poor soul from wasting his hard earned cash renting this flic I feel I have done mankind in general a service...Pura Vida
- Reviewed in Canada on September 15, 2022Verified PurchaseReally great movie but all of the French subtitles, which look great and add a lot to the movie were completely missing. So there was a lot of plot we couldn't understand. Waste of money to rent.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 27, 2022Verified PurchaseWhat a cast! Stories are well-written around this little town of "Ennui" (boredom). I will see it again! It brought me back to life from "pandemic-thinking" ... what a breath of fresh air! We all need to see this. Some scene are not for small children but ok for teens and adults. Enjoy life again!

5.0 out of 5 stars I got ennui mixed up with je ne sais quoi, blast those french
Verified PurchaseThe music and visuals on the start menu are excellent and i’ve been listening to exclusively that while doing my last couple reviews. The movie itself is one of Anderson’s best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hübsch und skurril
