A great portrait lens gets even better
The FE 85 mm F1.4 GM II follows the acclaimed FE 85 mm F1.4 GM with equally superb bokeh plus higher resolution at all apertures thanks to the latest lens technology. It also supports full AF speed and precision with α-series bodies. The lens is remarkably compact and lightweight, adding agility to extraordinary image quality. A great G Master portrait lens for maximum creative control.
Features
Ultimate freedom for creative portraiture
The FE 85 mm F1.4 GM II features Sony’s latest lens technology, following the acclaimed FE 85 mm F1.4 GM with equally stunning bokeh and higher resolution even at F1.4. It offers full AF performance with α-series bodies and is remarkably compact and lightweight. The perfect G Master portrait lens for maximum agility and creative control.
Even sharper with gorgeous bokeh
Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements achieve eye-opening resolution right out to the image edges, while two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements minimize chromatic aberration. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II suppresses flare and ghosting for outstanding resolution and clarity. Minimum focus distance is 2.79ft (0.85 m) (AF)/2.63ft (0.8 m) (MF).
Smoother bokeh transitions
The acclaimed performance of the previous model is enhanced by new optics that control chromatic aberration for more natural bokeh. An 11-blade circular aperture helps too, while precisely controlled spherical aberration and XA (extreme aspherical) elements reduce onion-ring bokeh for smooth transitions from sharp focus to deep F1.4 bokeh.
Features
Top AF performance with α-series bodies
2 XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and high-speed control give the FE 85 mm F1.4 GM II up to 3x faster5 AF speed. Moving subject tracking is improved by as much as 7x6, for reliable capture even when using narrow depth of field at F1.4. The 120fps capability of the α9 III with its global shutter is fully supported.
20%8 less mass, stunning images
First-class bokeh and resolution in a compact lens. XA (extreme aspherical) elements, refined optics, XD (extreme dynamic) motors and a circular aperture unit achieve superb large-aperture performance in an 3-3/8 in (84.7 mm) x 4-1/4 in (107.3 mm) lens that weighs only 22.7 oz (642 g). 13%8 less volume and 20% less mass for agile shooting.
An ideal 85 mm F1.4 lens for filmmaking
The FE 85 mm F1.4 GM II is ideal for filming people. It works with Real-time Recognition AF in α-series bodies, for fast, precise, quiet subject tracking that maintains sharp focus even at F1.4. Focus breathing is minimal and body breathing compensation is supported. Clickless aperture ring operation and Linear Response MF allow smooth, intuitive control.
Features
Rugged reliability
A dust- and moisture-resistant design ensures reliability in challenging outdoor conditions. The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels fingerprints, dust, water, oil and other contaminants.
Professional control
Two customizable focus hold buttons and an AF/MF switch offer flexible operability, while an independent aperture ring and Linear Response MF focus control provide the kind of intuitive control that creative shooting demands. The FE 85 mm F1.4 GM II accepts 77 mm threaded filters.
Road to Zero

5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive lens but G-master quality justifies the price tag
Verified PurchaseExpensive lens but in my opinion the quality justifies the price tag. I used it with a Sony A7rC and you can really see how sharp this lens is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast sharp light and pricey
Verified PurchaseWhile I wish Sony would have put an 85 1.2 out there, there's probably not a better 85 1.4 out there. This was a good iteration of Sony's 85. Compared to the 85 1.4 GM1, it is everything they've marketed it to be. Believe the hype. However, if you don't need to max out on all of these - sharpness, weight, AF speed, then there are decent options out there. You have to decide. For my use case (sports), I wanted an 85 that could match the speed of 30 or 60fps on the a9III whilst as wide an aperture as possible for typically not so well lit gyms. If you're just shooting portraits though, and don't require that speed, you can certainly find other options that are nicer to your wallet. I owned the Sigma 85 1.4 art before this, and rented the Sony 85 1.4 GM 1. In order of (subjective) quality - I'd say the GMII is top, next would be the Sigma 85 1.4 Art (which can be had for far cheaper), then the Sony 85 1.4 GMI.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly sharp lens and a huge upgrade over the previous version!
Verified PurchaseThis lens is incredible and was a huge upgrade over version 1 of this lens. The biggest upgrade was the focus speed and consistency. Typically with the v.1 lens I would have 10%+ of images out-of-focus, but with this lens it is very rare to have an image not tack-sharp. I can't recommend this lens enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar IQ
Verified PurchaseI’ve been shooting with the 85 1.8 for 6 years and hesitated upgrading to the 1.4, feeling the extra speed was not worth the price/weight. So glad I pulled the trigger on the new 1.4 85.
Super fast focus, and superlative image quality. The 1.8 was close, but noticeably below the performance of the new 1.4. The 85 will be a great compliment to my 50 1.4.
After heavy testing of the new lens, I have 2 commercial shoots and 2 weddings in the next 3 weeks. Looking forward to putting it thru it’s paces
