- Reviewed in Canada on November 11, 2024Verified PurchaseI enjoyed this Christmas movie, it was a totally different take on Santa Claus. Has many aspects to it with comedy and action. Good to have in the collection of other Christmas movies. It was filmed in a small town in Canada, that's why the movie feels like a remote location. The acting and storyline was what made this movie stand out.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 7, 2021Verified PurchaseA brilliant, brilliant movie with positively ingenious details. You will not see this coming. Let's be clear, this is definitely not a comedy, and it is not camp like "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians". It is a deadly (extremely deadly) serious action movie about a little kid hiring a hitman to kill Santa. It is twisted and dark. It is violent. Very violent.
Mel Gibson shows why he could do Mad Max and why they wanted him to do a Bond movie. He's dangerous and he means business. He handles a gun like someone born to it.
The details are everywhere. You'll have to see the movie a few times to see them all. [SPOILER, read after you've seen the movie] For example, did you notice that Mel uses an automatic in one hand and six shooter in the other for the climax? And that Mrs. Kringle uses a flintlock? Because, of course, they bought these things new.....
[NO SPOILERS]
The action is outstanding. The sets are terrific. The cast is first rate at every level. The script is demented, but everything in it makes sense. There is an devious interweaving of old fashioned Christmas traditions with contemporary action movie.
There is no other movie quite like this. You don't have to watch it at Christmas, but it certainly brings a different take to that holiday. Do not watch it with your kids.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 26, 2024Verified PurchaseA new classic Christmas movie with Mel Gibson added to our must have list.
Humor, Action with some shoot em up guts and gore. Lol
- Reviewed in Canada on August 10, 2024Verified PurchaseAfter Silent Night, that I did not really like because of the vulgarity and the stupidity of the characters, I gave up on those “bad Santa movies” and did not want to see any other. But, I was still curious about Mel Gibson, what he would be as Santa. So finally, I gave a try, and rent it.
Ok, it’s funny, a bit dark, not at you would wish for a family movie and certainly not for young children, but a lot less vulgar-morons and much better than Silent Night.
It might no ended on the classics of the years or on the shelves of the master pieces, but it worth to be watched. The story is original, the performance of Gibson as an old and tired Santa is good, the fights are not as bloody than Silent Night, but the most important part is that you want to know how it’s gona end. And that’s the reason why I bought it : because I will watch it again.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 19, 2025Verified PurchaseThis is a great movie by Mel Gibson !
- Reviewed in Canada on January 7, 2021Verified PurchaseI have only two complaints about this movie... Okay, 3...
1. I'd like to think that Gary Busey would've been a more ideal casting for Santa Claus, though Mel Gibson comes at an EXTREMELY CLOSE second for the portrayal of Santa Claus in works for mature audiences
2. I still don't know who composed the version of Jingle Bells used in the trailer
3. Yeah, i don't know how to explain why this movie is so great without having to spoil it.
I will say this though: it's pretty clear to me that Mel Gibson and Walton Goggins REALLY had a lot of fun portraying their respective roles, and the directors probably had just about as much fun writing up a hitman who is a little TOO obsessed with Santa. And considering the world we live in, I'm sure there's a lot of reason for ol' Saint Nick to be old and hateful for the early parts of the film. All in all, it's an amazingly dumb and stupidly amazing Christmas film that definitely needs to start airing on cable every winter holiday season.
In closing, have fumos.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 21, 2020Verified PurchaseIf you're looking for something a little (okay, a LOT) different in a Christmas movie, and you're not afraid of things getting somewhat dark and violent, then this little gem from the Nelms brothers should fit the bill. For, despite a significant amount of violence and swearing, there is some genuine Christmas heart to this film, and a gruff and (spoiler alert) gun-toting Santa still comes off pretty sympathetic, as played by Hollywood icon Mel Gibson. Walton Goggins' relentless hitman character is an awesome foil to Gibson's Old St Nick, and he's clearly having a blast (no pun intended) with his single-minded ambition to settle an old score with the man in the red suit. Keep an open mind, and don't give up on this one as you watch it. The story wraps up (pun intended) in a very satisfying way, when all is said and done, and you just might add it to your "must watch each season" list of Christmas movies, as I have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, intense, awesome
Verified PurchaseThis is the best “unconventional” Christmas movie I’ve seen in a while. Briefly reading the description (spoiled child gets coal for Christmas and hires a hitman to kill Santa), it sounds ridiculous I admit, but this movie is so well acted and executed it demands to be taken seriously. The overall tone of the film is dark, brooding, and edgy, with occasional tongue in cheek comments here and there to lighten it up just enough. The Christmas theme is still there, (be kind, Christmas spirit, Santa trying to spread cheer), however it’s woven into a story that pits it against modern circumstances, selfish people, and government bureaucracy. This is not a “feel good” movie by any stretch, but it is still an excellent and enjoyable watch, especially if you like to mix things up a bit and are tired of the “typical” stuff.
