- Reviewed in Canada on December 17, 2020Verified PurchaseThe book itself deserves a decent approval rating, and that is why I am giving it 4 stars. The material itself is great. All of the information within the book itself is accurate and helpful. I could not get into it for some time because of a very hectic and draining work schedule this summer. I just couldn't find the time. That said, when I finally did have time to immerse myself in it I discovered that the exercise map was not even included with the book! That made this product, basically, useless to me. I started reading this book and taking notes, and I was so excited to be delving into it...only to discover I can't do a single exercise that required the map because that map was simply not included with this book. I am EXTREMELY disappointed. I had hoped to locate seller information but it led me here instead, I hope the seller gets notifications from these reviews, because I do not know how else to contact the seller and I feel like I just bought about 200 pieces of paper to light fires with. I did not require this book - I am competent with a map and compass. I simply bought it because of who the author's are, and I thought it would be an interesting read. I just found out it was a complete let down as a result of incomplete material. Great book, but I am pissed about the lack of QC and the fact I paid for something I can not fully appreciate and enjoy. The reading material is fine, the delivery was fine. The exercise map was not included. Why would/did I even buy this?? I sincerely hope that this is not a common fault with this book/order for other customers.

- Reviewed in Canada on October 17, 2018Verified PurchaseOnce my son got hold of it, I never saw it again. He actually read and understood it.
Proof to me that this book is outstanding.
Downside is I'll have to order another for myself.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 6, 2018Verified PurchaseThis classic volume arrived as described, and was a great gift for a good friend who was contemplating orienteering. It is good value for its price.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 27, 2021Verified PurchaseThis entire book uses miles and other deprecated units of measurement. It's written by Europeans for Americans only, not for the rest of the world. Get another book if you want useful, real-world units and not that American nonsense.
Also worth noting is this is written by the owner of the Silva brand of compasses and edited by his daughter, so it's not exactly objective.

3.0 out of 5 stars Missing a training map that is used for several exercises
Verified PurchaseI do not have the first and second edition, but I have the impression that the third edition contains a lot of redundant information. Informat that was added to justify a 3rd edition.
And why did you make that major error: the table of contents mentions a training map that is missing. That map is used in several exercises!! Sloppy, if you ask me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning how to read a map
Verified PurchaseBought this book on line, as i am starting to hike in our forest areas, thought this might put some structure into the correct procedures for map and compass use.
Found this book very informative and a good learning platform, one problem with buying on line was the fact that a lot of the training exercises in the book needed the training map in the back of the book, you do not have this with on line downloads..
Would recomend this book to readers looking to improve the skills needed for safe passage when going off track.
