- Reviewed in Canada on February 18, 2018Verified PurchaseThe Expanse is clearly the best new science fiction story to hit movies and television combined in a decade. Despite this, I found the series a little difficult to engage with at first.... Call the genre astropunk if you like. The protagonists who are introduced at the start of the story are hard-edged individuals living on the margins of society, and the narrative depicts a future in which asteroid miners are the outcasts of an interplanetary society dominated by two hostile powers --- Earth and Mars. I don't think that’s a particularly likely future for a number of reasons --- including that by the time we’re mining the asteroids, the process will certainly be almost entirely automated. So let’s set questions of technological vision aside for now.
Pretty well everything else about The Expanse rings more than true. In fact, the truths relating to human nature become clearer and more compelling as the story unfolds. Every character is compromised in some way --- most in many ways, and that is a pretty accurate portrayal of reality! I found that I was soon drawn into, intrigued and in some cases charmed by the development of the characters’ multi-layered complexities. More than that, this has become a story to which I'm now fully committed.
Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of The Expanse is that this is very original storytelling... there is no rulebook for this kind of narrative, and you can feel the freshness and freedom in the script, the settings, the story lines and in the work of the actors themselves, who have definitely been cut loose to convey a new kind of science fiction narrative from a unique perspective. Certainly, watch more than a couple of episodes, and allow the story to percolate.
If you care about science fiction, as I do (the future is coming, and we’ll do well to be ready when it arrives), then I think you'll find The Expanse to be packed with more than enough fresh ideas to satisfy you fully. Perhaps I can state it more clearly. Despite the limitations I've noted, they are secondary to the places this story takes you. There is nothing currently out there to equal this series in television drama or in film. The Expanse breaks exciting new ground in the science fiction genre.

- Reviewed in Canada on August 5, 2017Verified PurchaseSome might find it a little underwhelming after the realism and perfection of the first season. But it is actually quite good and a deign successor. I was amazed at how much happens during these 13 episode while still letting all the character breathe. (Except maybe the Martian Marines until the end.)
It was touching, it was suspenseful, it was very humane.
But darn I wished they had showed more of the Ganymede and Mars lower gravity Vs 0g or 1g.
Now... The long wait for season 3 begins. And as long as their will be physical copies available, I'll pre-order the Expanse.
If you're a sci-fi fan and want something solid, this is definitely IT!
- Reviewed in Canada on August 13, 2022Verified PurchaseThis is a very accurate sci fi space show. No artificial gravity or space lasers. A very enjoyable series.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 24, 2020Verified PurchaseA great adaption of the book by James S. A. Corey. This season continues on from where the first left off and we get to learn more about the characters and the world they live in. It is so nice to see a movie that doesn't completely rewrite the book because some director thinks they know better. Why can't they all be like this?

- Reviewed in Canada on September 4, 2017Verified PurchaseThis show is quite a bit different from anything I've ever seen. It's all about the human experience out there with the same limited thought patterns we have here on Earth. Which proves once again that we are not spiritually mature enough to deal with alien life, which so far on this show there are none. It's very dangerous out there, we see a lot of deaths because of those same limited thought patterns which make this show very unpredictable. Script and acting are excellent very entertaining.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 8, 2020Verified PurchaseI watched this on 鶹 Prime, and liked enough to buy Season 1 to 3. As Season four is not yet out on Blue-ray. Very interesting story line, dealing with several story lines but interwoven together so it makes sense. Some of the actors are good rest are marginal.... Filmed in Toronto with many recognizable buildings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Season One was very good but Season Two is a step up
Verified PurchaseThere was a time when I had all but given up on the SyFy Channel because... well because it was producing and airing a lot of schlock.
That's changed - a lot - in the past few years and one of the reasons for my renewed interest in SyFy's programming is the consistently great series "The Expanse." Season One was very good... Season Two is a step up from that.
I know there are purists out there who do not like this series because it does not adhere closely to the books upon which it is based. I've said this before but it does bear repeating: Books, movies, and television programs are all separate art forms. No movie can capture all the nuances contained within the pages of a beautifully written book; no television series can faithfully reproduce the depth of characterization in a novel.
Does that mean film and television programs are pale imitations of novels?
No.
Of course not.
In fact, they are sometimes - at least in my opinion - better than the books and stories they are based upon.
For example: "To Have and Have Not" is a great movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. It is rightfully considered a classic and - gasp - it is based on a fairly ordinary Ernest Hemingway short story. In truth, the movie bears little or no resemblance to the story and that's to its credit.
Does that mean that I think SyFy's version of "The Expanse" is better than the books?
No.
Of course not.
It is simply different and that's okay.
Season Two is most notable because it contains some really good writing and some excellent character portrayals by its ensemble case. The addition of Frankie Adams as a Martian Marine Gunnery Sergeant was an inspired choice. She is not a classic beauty, though she is a very pretty woman. Looks aside, she portrays her character with the kind of toughness and strength that a career soldier needs to actually get to be a career soldier. The fact that in real life she is also an amateur boxer probably contributes to her ability to play this role effectively.
The entire cast is, in fact, terrific. Shoreh Aghdashloo, Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, and the other series regulars are all outstanding.
Their portrayals aside, the writers deserve enormous credit because it is their well-honed plots and their ability to develop believable - often flawed - characters that makes this a terrific series. The characters make mistakes that sometimes get people killed and, sadly, that's a dose of reality that's often missing in television dramas regardless of genre. The writers have also managed to make the political scenarios not only tense but believable. That's important because, although we humans like to think we're a pretty sophisticated species, the truth is that when the chips are down we're prone to make hasty decisions based upon incomplete information. Often, that can lead to catastrophe.
(If you don't believe that I suggest you read the headlines on any given day... the world seems almost daily to be standing on the brink of the abyss.}
The sets and the CGI are used effectively in the series, a plus, but the producers and directors do not rely upon them to tell the story at the expense of the plots and characters. Rather, they are used to supplement the writing and that is, indeed, a major plus. The direction in every one of the 13 episodes was on point, which is a little remarkable given the fact there were several people helming episodes during the season.
One last note: This series is remarkable because it contains a lot of very strong female characters. That is long overdue in television programming and I, for one, am glad to see the writers have not shied away from writing strong female characters into their scripts.
It comes down to this: Season Two is excellent television and worth every bit of 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein Hoch auf den Plan B
