Product description
The Exo Terra Sub Stratum is collected from the mineral-rich foothills of the Aso Volcano in Japan. The natural volcanic soil, formed from andesitic and rhyolitic tephra, is very nutrient rich, ideal for lush plant growth in bioactive planted terrariums. The porous surface allows for excellent drainage and aeration, supporting strong root growth. The Sub Stratum’s friable, low density structure promotes a flourishing population of beneficial, nitrifying bacteria, creating a self-sustaining, living terrarium ecosystem. The active beneficial bacteria of the soil will decompose biological waste, keeping the terrarium clean and healthy.
From the manufacturer

The word paludarium originates from the Latin word “palus” which stands for swamp. Paludariums are semi-aquatic terrarium habitats that replicate a rainforest, swamp or stream and can harbor aquatic as well as terrestrial animal and plant species. A paludarium combines the best of two worlds: an extra deep bottom allows you to incorporate a substantial water part or aquarium section adjacent to the land or terrarium section. A fully equipped and functioning paludarium is basically a small, closed ecosystem.
The Exo Terra Landscaping Substrates mimic the natural soil found in arid regions, like deserts or savannahs. Most desert soils are not purely sand-based but rather a combination of sand, decomposed granite and clay resulting in interesting and sometimes colorful rock formations. Exo Terra’s Landscaping Substrates allow you to create your own desert or savannah landscape, including cool-humid burrows as well as warmer elevated basking areas.
Reptiles are ectotherm, and use heat from an external source to thermoregulate their optimal body temperature. Most reptiles use direct radiant heat from the sun in combination with conductive heat from sun-heated surfaces such as branches, rocks or other heat accumulating structures. Providing such an appropriate, species related, temperature gradient in the terrarium is an important factor in successful reptile keeping. With the Exo Terra Thermostats you can create a well-controlled heating system that allows you to maintain the required temperature conditions similar to those found in a desert or tropical environment.
The Exo Terra Misters are misting systems suitable for all types of terrariums and greenhouses. They help maintain optimal humidity by generating a fine mist which can be easily adjusted depending on the type of animal or plant housed. Frequent misting helps stimulate breeding behaviour, and is a necessity when housing live tropical plants such as Bromeliads, orchids, mosses, etc.

The Exo Terra Reptile UVB NANO bulb emits optimal levels of UVA & UVB and is an excellent UV source for Nano Terrarium setups. The small dimension of this Reptile UVB NANO is perfect for use with the Exo Terra Reptile Deep Dome NANO; a fixture specifically designed for use on NANO and MINI terrariums. The bulb’s optimal Vitamin D3 yield index ensures vitamin D3 photosynthesis to aid calcium absorption and prevent metabolic diseases while the UVA rays will contribute to the animal’s overall wellbeing.
The Exo Terra Incubation Devices make incubating reptile eggs safer, less complicated, and improve hatching rates. No matter if you prefer the Suspended Incubation Method or the more traditional Incubation Substrate method, with the Exo Terra Incubation Devices your reptile eggs are easy to incubate. The Exo Terra Incubation Devices are the only incubating devices on the market that control both temperature and humidity with high accuracy.
The Exo Terra Dart Frog Terrarium is the ideal amphibian habitat designed by European herpetologists, perfect for bioactive planted setups. The single front opening door allows maximum viewing pleasure and provides easy access for maintenance and feeding. A push-button lock keeps the terrarium secure and can even be outfitted with an optional lock to prevent unwanted opening.
Care Guides
At Exo Terra, we understand that owning a reptile or amphibian is a unique and rewarding experience. However, it also comes with its own set of responsibilities. That’s why we’ve created this comprehensive resource to help you navigate the intricate world of herpetoculture and provide the best possible care for your animals.
Whether you’re a beginner enthusiast or an experienced herpetologist, our academy offers a wealth of information, tips, and insights to enhance your understanding and skills in reptile and amphibian care. We cover everything from choosing the right habitat and selecting suitable species to creating optimal environments and maintaining proper nutrition.
Academy
Reptile keeping is a rewarding and fulfilling hobby requiring some basic knowledge and dedication. It is essential to understand the needs of the reptile species you are interested in keeping, as each species has unique requirements for temperature, lighting, diet, and enclosure size. In this section, you will find detailed information on the various species of reptiles commonly kept as pets, including their natural history, care requirements, and potential health issues.
Expeditions
In contrast to other animal groups, reptiles and amphibians are neglected subjects for expedition studies. Very few reptile communities have been adequately documented concerning their behaviour. A carefully conducted study lasting just a few weeks can significantly contribute to the pool of scientific knowledge for most species of lizards, snakes and amphibians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always excellent
Verified PurchaseI’ve used this product several times in bioactive vivariums for my reptiles but this was my first time buying from 鶹.
It arrives bang on time, and was amazing quality - the same as if bought direct from the supplier. I used this also in my house plants in a potting mix for them too and it seems to keep my houseplants thriving as well!
But pricey but definitely worth it I think

5.0 out of 5 stars Plants dig it
Verified PurchaseAnything I plant in this stratum Thrives!! I’ve done a couple moss terrariums with different substrates (spaghnum, clay, and stratum) trying to decide which one I liked most, and the answer is sub stratum! Everything greens up immediately, and it just becomes a healthier looking plant. Quick growth, I had a couple newly rooted cuttings that got knocked out of their planter and were very stressed and sad. I popped them in a cup with this stratum and a day later you’d never even know something happened to them! I was really worried about doing the moss bc I didn't know what to expect, moss can’t tolerate fertilizers and I know very little about ‘proper’ substrate for it. But it’s so so happy, could be due to the container as all 3 are potted a little different but I think the micronutrients or beneficial bacteria are doing their jobs, making my job much easier!!
When I'm done with these other few terrariums and small guys I’m gonna start bottom and top dressing all my plants with sub stratum, or using only this sub stratum for smaller pots. It’s a very good price, compared to the name brand that’s twice as much for the same amount. There’s also a listing for 4.4lbs for $2 more than this 8.8lb bag. I just came back to buy 3 more bags, not too much more expensive than.soil nowadays, and it’s far superior in almost every way.
