Having just upgraded my home network, I wanted to take advantage of the new available speeds on some of my devices that either don’t have a built-in ethernet port, or which only have a gigabit port. This adapter looked good, so I picked it up to try.

Out of the package, I was very pleased with the build quality of the adapter. The metal enclosure feels solid and will surely act as a good heat-sink for the adapter when in use. The attached USB-C cable feels durable as well, but it’s hard to say with these short cables if you end up bending it around a lot.

I tried attaching this adapter to a bunch of my devices, including a Windows desktop, a MacBook, and an iPad. On all of these devices, this adapter was instantly recognized and the maximum available speed was available; I didn’t have to install any device drivers myself (including on the Mac, despite what the instructions say) to get this maximum performance. In-use, all of these devices were able to take advantage of the speeds and the connection provided was completely stable. I had no issues whatsoever, so I am extremely pleased!

Overall, this is a great USB-C 5Gbps ethernet adapter which is great for most uses. The price ($60 CAD at time of review, with an extra 20% coupon available) is pretty good given what internal PCI-e cards can go for, and considering that this is an external adapter that you can easily use on different devices. I would highly recommend this adapter!

WAVLINK 5G USB-C to Ethernet Adapter.
(WL-NWU341G)

This Wavlink 5Gb/s network adapter was recognized right away under Windows 11 with no driver download needed. However there is a driver *website if required, according to the manual Mac OS only runs at 1Gb/s until the driver is manually updated. My system shows RTL8157 ver: 11.15.327.2024

*Currently the website (including the QR code) shows a 404 error for the drivers and only has NWU340G (also uses RTL8157) drivers.

It connects to a 10Gb USB-C port but should be good with a 5Gb port, but due to overhead you won't get 100% of the 5Gbs network bandwidth, the manual estimated a speed of 3.3Gbs if on a 5Gb USB-C port.

The adapter is also backwards compatible with 10Mb, 100Mb, 1Gb, & 2.5Gb, along with automatic cross over (MDIX).

I currently only have the equipment to run at 2.5Gb over ethernet, and I could acheve a solid 280MB/s file transfer from PC to PC. Which is faster than most mechanical hard drives and even some SATA SSDs and takes full advantage of the 2.5Gbs bandwidth. I'm sure that 5Gbps would be very close to twice the speed.

The adapter has a short but well made cable and the body of it is mostly aluminum. It ran cool (at least at 2.5Gbs) and I had no data transfer issues.

The quick start guide (manual) has very small print, but looks to be rather useful and has 5 different languages.

System requirements are listed as Win 10/11 or Mac OS 10.8 on the box, but on the Wavlink store are listed as:

Boy oh boy, was this ever an adventure to install. First off, this adapter will automatically install in Windows 11, but it will not do 5gig. It will only do 2.5gig with the default windows driver. I've seen this with other adapters, so I went looking on the website Wavlink provided on the included driver card. That drive page, however, had no drivers for this adapter. I went to the main product page for this adapter, but no driver there either. The included manual has a different URL for a driver, so I went to that page which did have a link on it for this adapter, but the link did not work.

What DOES work is if you google "RTL8157 driver windows" and download the driver from Realtek's page. You will eventually end up at a page where you can download "Win11 Auto Installer Program (NetAdapterCx). The date (as of this review) on it is 2025/03/19. Once you extract and install that, you can plug in the adapter, connect a good ethernet cable and get 5gig speeds.

So, with all that out of the way, this Wavlink 5gig adapter works really well. I was able to transfer from my NAS (10gig network) at steady 5gig speed. The adapter did get warm but not hot in the process. Happy with that.

I'm taking off 1 star for the hoops that Wavlink made me jump through in order to get this adapter to perform properly at 5gig speeds. The adapter itself is excellent and I have no trouble recommending it.

Ho acquistato questo adattatore WAVLINK da USB-C a Ethernet 5G per migliorare la connessione di rete sul mio MacBook, soprattutto durante videoconferenze e trasferimenti di file pesanti. Devo dire che fa esattamente il suo lavoro. La configurazione è stata immediata: collegato e subito riconosciuto, senza bisogno di driver aggiuntivi. La velocità è stabile e davvero veloce, purché si abbia una porta USB 3.1 Gen 2 (come indicato). Ottimo anche su iPad Pro e altri dispositivi USB-C compatibili. La costruzione è solida, con un cavo corto ma robusto, e il corpo in metallo dà una buona sensazione di qualità. Unica accortezza: assicuratevi che il vostro dispositivo supporti davvero la velocità 5G, altrimenti non ne sfruttate appieno il potenziale. This worked for me with every USB-C capable machine I tried it on (several Macs, My desktop PC, several mini PCs and my SteamDeck). I didn't have any compatibility issues, and I didn't need to install any special drivers. One note: the copy claims that it won’t work with a Mac that has less than an M3 processor, but it worked without issue on my M1 Mac.

On devices with only a USB 3.0 port (i.e. 5 Gbps USB), I was only able to get about 2-3 GBps, but that is to be expected, as with overhead, getting 5 Gbps out of a 5Gbps USB port is basically impossible; I was just happy to see that it still functioned, and did so at faster than 1Gbps speeds.

For all of the other devices with faster ports (I tried it with USB 3.2 gen2, USB 3.2 gen2x2, USB4, as well as Thunderbolt 3, 4, and 5), I was able to get the expected 5 Gbps connection to my 10 Gbps switch without issue.

This adapter is:
- Far more capable than 1GbE and 2.5GbE adapters
- Far less expensive than 10GbE adapters.
- Far more convenient and compatible than PCIe-based networking cards

This makes a significant upgrade to just about any machine that doesn't already have 10GbE, and I've already picked up several more for my mini PCs.

I’ve had good experience with Wavlink adapters and hubs in the past, and this is no different.

Update: I thought it important to add that this does not work with the Nintendo Switch 2 (they never claimed it did, so that doesn't dock any points in my view, but it's important to know)

J'ai acquis cet adaptateur Ethernet vers USB-C dans le but de le brancher sur un MacBook Pro... mais je l'ai testé avec un iPhone 15 Pro Max pour voir... et je n'ai pas été déçu !

Dans la notice, ils laissaient entendre qu'il fallait installer un driver pour macOS (et Windows)... mais on a besoin absolument de rien pour un iPhone avec une prise UBS-C (et ça doit être la même chose pour iPadOS). J'ai désactivé le WiFi, le Bluetooth et le réseau cellulaire et, après avoir branché l'adaptateur, une ligne Ethernet est apparue comme par magie dans les réglages (voir photo) !

Même si sur le test on voit écrit 870 Mbps (voir photo encore), il faut savoir que j'ai même atteint une crête à plus de 940 Mbps sur un réseau Ethernet à 1 Gbps. Bluffant ! Je n'ai pas pu tester au-delà mais je n'ai aucun mal à croire que l'adaptateur puisse atteindre les 5 Gbps comme annoncé dans ses spécifications. À noter que, lorsque j'ai fait les tests, je n'avais pas plus de 60 Mbps via le réseau cellulaire et 380 Mbps via le WiFi. Voilà donc mon iPhone qui télécharge 3 fois plus rapidement que le WiFi avec une latence de moins de 12 ms. Vraiment bluffant !

Sans compter, qu'au delà des aspects pratiques, le boîtier est de toute beauté avec sa coque design en métal. Cette dernière mesure 8 cm de longueur, pour 3 cm de largeur et 1,8 cm de hauteur. Le cordon lui fait autour de 13 cm de longueur. L'ensemble pèse seulement 46 grammes.

Une réussite absolue ! Franchement, ça vaudrait même 6 étoiles ! Foncez !

Même si sur le test on voit écrit 870 Mbps (voir photo encore), il faut savoir que j'ai même atteint une crête à plus de 940 Mbps sur un réseau Ethernet à 1 Gbps. Bluffant ! Je n'ai pas pu tester au-delà mais je n'ai aucun mal à croire que l'adaptateur puisse atteindre les 5 Gbps comme annoncé dans ses spécifications. À noter que, lorsque j'ai fait les tests, je n'avais pas plus de 60 Mbps via le réseau cellulaire et 380 Mbps via le WiFi. Voilà donc mon iPhone qui télécharge 3 fois plus rapidement que le WiFi avec une latence de moins de 12 ms. Vraiment bluffant !

Sans compter, qu'au delà des aspects pratiques, le boîtier est de toute beauté avec sa coque design en métal. Cette dernière mesure 8 cm de longueur, pour 3 cm de largeur et 1,8 cm de hauteur. Le cordon lui fait autour de 13 cm de longueur. L'ensemble pèse seulement 46 grammes.

Une réussite absolue ! Franchement, ça vaudrait même 6 étoiles ! Foncez !
