5.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Heart Stopping Mystery
Verified PurchaseThis series is different than most of Ryan's thriller/mysteries, many of which I've read over the past decade. Ryan draws us into a deeper look at people, the good, the bad, and all sorts of grey in between. The plot is gripping, and the characters, though not the usual over-the-top, almost superhero types we've come to love, are more realistic, although still not quite 🤔 normal. Cassie, with the support of both her old and new families, learns to appreciate her talents and is now ready to use her powers with less fear. With her old partner gone, she has met all sorts of new helpers and partnered up with two totally opposite but equally strong new accomplices. The tale begins with Cassie meeting up with the guy at work she's been romantically interested in for years, coincidentally finding themselves in the same restaurant in another town and state. They come togrther to solve a mystrious death complicated by a ghost, a woman driven mad by loss and love, and facilitated by mundane greed that is part of institutional upper management types, who under the guise of protecting the company or organization, in this case oromote a particularly evil set of leaders. Nothing is who or what it seemed to be at first glance. This is a most enjoyable and thought-provoking story, giving the reader more than just the formulaic mystery/love story wrapped in a bit of the occult style that so many of today's writers, who, crank out a book every few months. This tale isn't about werewolves, vampires, or even witches, but there is something more that captures the imagination.
The characters, the plot, and a new locale provide a background that lends itself to a shift from the super humans to more ancient, mysterious magical time with characters,, the kind told around a campfire, in nursery rhymes and by wandering storytellers in a world gone long long ago.
So, find a comfy spot and lose yourself in some great entertainment, seen through some pretty strange eyes. Ryan leaves us a bit exhausted, yet still seeking more. It is a well written story that invites us to look into deeper mysteries than just solving the immediate murders
