Product description
Seven friends, recent college graduates, are searching for a place in the real world, as they face issues of career and commitment. Leslie and Alec (Ally Sheedy and Judd Nelson) try to save a crumbling romance. Wendy (Mare Winningham), a shy virgin, hides a love for Billy (Rob Lowe), a reluctant father/husband still searching for goals. Kevin (Andrew McCarthy) is a cynical writer who scorns love until he realizes he's in love with his best friend's girl. Kirbo (Emilio Estevez), a law student, obsessively pursues an older woman. The beautiful, neurotic Jules (Demi Moore) paints a poignant picture of life in the fast lane. Against the backdrop of St. Elmo's, their local hang-out, they save, betray and love one another as only the closest of friends can.

- Reviewed in Canada on September 11, 2014Verified PurchaseThis 80s flick starring 7 of the so-called Brat Pack actors is still fun to watch almost 30 years later, albeit for different reasons. It's amusing to see the characters take themselves so very seriously. Great supporting cast, especially a very young, already ethereally beautiful Andie McDowell as Emilio Estevez's fantasy girl. Rob Lowe's portrayal of Billy Hixx will strike a chord with many viewers; didn't we all have that one messed up friend we couldn't give up on even though we probably should have? Ally Sheedy gives her usual flawless performance as a stuffy yuppie chick, and Mare Winningham is sweet and vulnerable as the "fat" girl of the group. (She was pregnant at the time and they padded her up, but she still looks delicate and fragile rather than chubby.). Best line is delivered by Andrew McCarthy as embittered single guy Kevin: "Love is an illusion created by lawyer types like yourself, to perpetuate another illusion called marriage, to create the reality of divorce and the illusionary need for divorce lawyers."
The best thing about the movie is the music. The excellent score was one of multiple Grammy-winner David Foster's first film soundtracks. The movie's pretty instrumental love theme became a minor radio hit. The title song "St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)" was a collaboration between Foster and singer John Paar, and became a #1 hit around the world. Though it's mostly associated with the movie, the song is actually a tribute to Canadian wheelchair athlete Rick Hansen. Foster had been asked to compose a song for Hansen's Man in Motion world tour which raised awareness about spinal cord injuries. Foster admired Hansen greatly and wanted very much to do the project, but he was facing a deadline for the film; he and Paar worked together to write a dynamic tune that worked for both the film and for Hansen's tour. Several other good pop songs are included on the very listenable soundtrack.
All in all, a nostalgic treat that's worth re-watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absoluter Kultfilm der 80er!
Dabei mu? man wissen,da?

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the 'Brat Pack' Movies
Verified Purchase"St. Elmo's Fire" is my favorite 'Brat Pack' movie. With an all-star cast, how can you go wrong? First you have Rob Lowe who is simply gorgeous as Billy, a guy who can't decide what he's going to do after graduating college. He plays the sax (quite well I might add) for fun and sometimes for money.
Then you have Julie (Demi Moore in a wonderful performance), who is very high-strung after learning about her father's marriage to another woman. Her life is basically like kettle with hot water that is about to boil. She's happy then she's sad, then she's manic...She's everything! But she does a wonderful job.
I loved seeing Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy together. After seeing "The Breakfast Club," I never thought I'd see them as a couple. They are cute together and the scenes they share are fun to watch.
Emilio Estevez's performance was just as wonderful as the others. He falls in love with a doctor (Andie McDowell) who is already involved with someone else, but he's determined to make things go his way. It doesn't work, but watching him try to make it work is just as much fun.
Andrew McCarthy is a lot of fun to watch. Everyone thinks he's gay because he doesn't have a girlfriend and doesn't date very much. It's a typical stereotype, but I got over that. The end of the movie proves that he is not gay. Mare Winningham gives a stunning performance as a girl who comes from a very wealthy family. She loves Billy but her father wants her to marry a successful businessman. Since she is 'daddy's girl,' she doesn't want to disappoint him.
Overall, this movie is just fun to watch and listening to the director's commentary is great. You get to learn about all these things that went on behind the scenes and what roles the actors were originally up for.
