This is one of my favorite historical movies of all time. Cate Blanchett should have gotten the Oscar and the movie too instead of Shakespeare in Love. The follow up, the Golden Years or so, wasn't so good, in fact was totally forgettable, but I am a great fan of Elizabeth I and II and of the movie. Glenda Jackson was great too in the series Elizabeth R, but it was too theatrical and I couldn't stand the actor who played her lover, Robert Dudley. I could watch Cate Blanchett playing anything.

Elizabeth I has been portrayed by a slew of actresses by none with such poignancy as Cate Blanchet. This is my favorite Queen Elizabeth movie. Historically accurate for the most part with a full cast of characters worthy of a GOT nod. The blu-ray has a bunch of cool features and it's crystal clear. A must-watch and own.

This is a great movie of Queen Elizabeth 1. It showed me parts of history that I didn't know how it had happened and made me more interested in the start of Queen Elizabeth's reign. I would recommend this movie for any lover of history or someone who is interested in just the British royal line.

She was very influential in the Reformation period and the movie brings this out. Great story, involving her love affair and the difficulty of ruling when she did. Her rule was a long one. She ruled following Henry VIII and the short rule of women after him. Very well made.

ELIZABETH is and was my introduction to director Shekhar Kapur. Boy, can this guy make a movie. Film is a medium that works via visuals, and Kapur delivers sensational vistas, landscapes, settings, and angles. There's a look and a feel of quality aesthetics in this film, which makes watching it a visually-enhancing experience.

As Kapur in the special features readily admits, this is a speculative account of the early reign of Queen Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett). Her ascension certainly came at a most turbulent time; she succeeded her very Catholic sister, "Bloody Mary," whose persecution of Protestant "heretics" was tearing Britain apart. (In fact, the film opens with a disturbing scene depicting three "heretics" being burned alive at the stake; quite the "hook" to get the viewer to pay attention.) The young queen is in dangerous waters, and turns to two men for help. One of them, Sir William Cecil (played solidly by Sir Richard Attenborough), has consistent advice: Get married, produce an heir. The other advisor, Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush is sensational in this brooding, almost sinister role) is a bit more practical: Do whatever it takes to keep Elizabeth in power.

To top it all off, there is the matter of Elizabeth's lover (although not proven historical fact), Robert Dudley. Played by an almost-dainty Joseph Fiennes, it becomes readily apparent young Robert will not be strong enough to handle a queen growing steadily more powerful and independent. Dudley's outcome is one of the more predictable plot lines of the film.

And as we watch, we see the young Elizabeth become hardened, more cynical; we see her forfeit her own personal life in exchange for a persona--an icon around whom her people can rally. All of this is done through the exquisite professionalism of Cate Blanchett, who much deserved her Academy Award nomination.

Other surprises in this film include a stunning Fanny Ardant, who plays Elizabeth's rival, Mary of Guise; and then there's the new James Bond, Daniel Craig, who plays a somewhat overzealous priest. The special features pale in comparison to the movie, but come on, the movie is where the rubber meets the road. ELIZABETH is a gripping, compelling, artistic period piece--a cinematic feast as rich as it is engrossing. Sign me up as a Shekhar Kapur fan.

This was bought for my husband but the whole family enjoyed this fascinating insight into early Elizabethan times. Cate Blanchet does not disappoint as the Virgin Queen. Her portrayal during both this first film & the sequel impresses this monarch¡¯s determination to take care of her people, showcasing her intelligence & intuition whilst remaining feminine & beguiling when dealing with her advisors alongside their own machinations & ambitions. The sequel is equally fabulous. Both films show the more human & sometimes vulnerable side of Good Queen Bess & her complex & sometimes tempestuous relationships with advisors such as Frances Walsingham. Geoffrey Rush is fabulous as the brilliant spymaster & pioneer of historic politics who is relentless & brutal in his protection of Queen Elizabeth & his country. The films also pinpoint the religious tensions between Spain & Tudor England & the burden of crippling responsibility & power held by this bastion of a monarch. If you love Tudor history & sumptuous costumes & political intrigue, this one¡¯s for you. NB: Try Wolf Hall for even more in depth political intrigue between Elizabeth¡¯s mother Anne Boleyn & her father¡¯s brilliant advisor, Thomas Cromwell - Mark Rylance provides a very intelligent portrayal of Cromwell in this wonderful adaption of Hilary Mantells book & Claire Foy is superb as his ally / nemesis - Anne Boleyn.
