- Reviewed in Canada on December 14, 2017Verified PurchaseThis game supersedes battlefront 1 by light years. The campaign is not very lenghuy approx 4.5 hours of playtime but the story is intriging, cinematic are great! For those people complaining about micro transactions on multiplayer they’ve been removed. For those complaining that getting upgrades takes too much time ... well it’s the goal of the game to have you grind it out and buy better skills. Overall superb game some people just complain about everything and anything, personally I love the game and look forward to the future DLCs
- Reviewed in Canada on February 18, 2019Verified PurchaseThis is a review for just the single player part. It’s pretty good but kinda short. The story honestly isn’t the best I’ve come across but better than what most reviews say. At least that’s what I think. The game however had a few errors where I had to start over from the last saved checkpoint.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 10, 2019Verified PurchaseSo was I. Until I started playing this game. I'm not a fan of first person shooters either so the first thing I did was change the settings so I could view 3rd person - after I did that this game became the first multiplayer game I've ever been into as well. So it's great on many levels - solo play, multi play, split screen play, 1st person, 3rd person, action - super fun. I recommend this game to everyone.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 28, 2018Verified PurchaseWill be trading this game in.
From someone who played over 500 hours of the first Battlefront, this game is extremely disappointing. EA screwed up big time.
-- 2020 Edit --
This is one of my favourite games of all time. The devs listened to the community and continued to update this game into an amazing epic. Highly recommended this game for both the campaign and online multiplayer.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 22, 2017Verified PurchaseI honestly like the campaign in this game and have had fun with the online multiplayer, yes there is a lot of hate out there but if it wasn’t for those micro transactions it would be mostly positive. Who knows how these micro transactions will end up but for now I’m having a lot of fun
- Reviewed in Canada on November 16, 2018Verified PurchaseNow this is a story all about how Luke's life got flipped turned upside down.
And I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there
I'll tell you how he became the prince of the Jedi in the galaxy there.
In West Polis Massa born and raised
On the sands of Tattoine is where he spent most of his days
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool
And all shooting some Stormtroopers outside of the school
When a couple of Siths who were up to no good
Started making trouble in his neighborhood
He got in one little fight and Obiwan got scared
And said "I have the high ground Anakin" while standing above his hair.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 5, 2017Verified PurchaseBattlefront II is an unfortunate case of one step forward, two steps back.
Firstly, credit where credit is due - The game looks and sounds phenomenal, and the "Star Wars Feel" that was present in the first game makes a return here with the welcome addition of both the Prequel and Force Awakens eras. As well, a single player campaign has been added and this time around there are over 4 maps available at launch, with more promised down the road without having to purchase a hefty Season Pass.
However, the core mechanics of the game are fundamentally flawed, and a heavy-handed microtransaction system ruin a game with so much potential.
Battlefront (2015) had a leveling system dependent on in-game progression, where scoring kills, blowing up starfighters and capturing objectives translated to in-game credits and XP. These were dolled out at a reasonable rate, and the better you did in a match, the more rewards you received. Earn enough, and you could spend it on cosmetic items - new skins & emotes - or new guns and Star Cards. The balancing on the weapons and Star Cards weren't perfect, but the differences between them weren't game-breaking. Someone who had played the game religiously for weeks was not at a decisive advantage over someone who played it casually. Sure, they would have a cool looking helmet and a 2% faster recharge time on their shields, but matches were (largely) determined on player skill.
None of that is the case in Battlefront II. In keeping with the current trend in gaming, and to warrant their removal of a Season Pass, DICE/EA implemented microtransactions in the form of loot crates (Read: Gambling) that are directly tied to character progression. Playing the game still earns you in-game currency - albeit at a slow trickle - but the real kicker, and what EA is banking on, is the ability to speed up your leveling by spending real cash. The tragic misstep here is that these loot crates don't just unlock cosmetic items, but abilities which detrimentally impact gameplay. Grenades with a larger blast radius, faster health recharging, faster weapon cooldown - when you're beaten by another player only to see that their loadout provided an unfair edge, it removes all sense of parity to a multiplayer game. Balance is key to maintaining an enjoyable multiplayer experience, and that's simply absent here. The online is absolutely "pay-to-win" in its current state.
In addition, the sheer randomness of the loot crate unlocks is absurd. It doesn't matter what character class (E.g. Officer or Assault) or starship (E.g. Fighter or Bomber) or hero (E.g. Kylo Ren or Luke Skywalker) you prefer playing as, or even spend the most time with, because the primary way to unlock anything is to purchase a random crate and hope that whatever is inside is actually beneficial to you. The secondary method is crafting these specific unlocks through yet another in-game currency, but that method is intentionally slow to steer people toward the microtransactions.
As for the campaign, it doesn't warrant a purchase on its own. It's relatively short (roughly 5 hours) and I found the story to be predictable and poorly delivered. The missions didn't feel remarkable at all, and it's disjointed structure feels like they shoehorned it in.
The Arcade Mode, which includes the only split-screen option is pathetic. Small, infantry-only skirmishes on tiny maps is a laughable excuse for any kind of co-op, and a far cry from the Instant Action and Galactic Conquest fans had wished for. Again, don't purchase the game for this alone.
Finally, it's worth mentioning the abysmal approach DICE/EA have taken with regards to the development of this game. While I can appreciate that the video game industry is a business, its obvious their sole focus was on what the consumer will pay, not what they'll play. As a lifelong Star Wars fan, and someone who plays far too many video games, there are a multitude of other issues I had with this game that I haven't even mentioned here (shooting mechanics, squad-play, weapon customization, etc.) and it just sours a game that had so much potential.
Quite simply, Battlefront II had the opportunity to redeem the mistakes of the first game and create a wonderful piece of fan service.
They didn't, and that's damn disappointing.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 7, 2018Verified PurchaseBought as a Christmas present for my son, all the negative attention for this game is for online play only which we do not do anyways... My son is able to battle with all the characters offline no issues at no extra cost! Game looks amazing and my son loves it.
