5.0 out of 5 stars great charger for exclusionary fencing
I have a racoon problem and have tried various things to take care of it. Had a trapper come out and trap 4 of them, which left 3, that is now 5.... Tried paintballs, pepperballs, cayenne in the areas they get under the fence or into the garage. Have tried bird spikes (which actually do work to keep them off the roof and out of the trees), bricks and pound in edging. Stopped feeding the cats at night, so the racoons are now no longer primarily nocturnal. Even tried motion activated sprinklers, which they love.
They get into engine compartments and rip up wiring, so i tried the pepper infused wire wrap. I'm pretty sure they just view that as spicy wiring and leave it as a digestif.
Basically, short of non-humane means, i have tried almost everything. So when these popped up on my feed, grabbed one. Grabbed some fence wire and did some runs around and under two of the vehicles, plugged it in and waited. After two days, no more racoons near those vehicles. It's a small win, but a win nonetheless. I think my next project is going to be hooking the ground to the chain link fence and using insulated standoffs to run a top and bottom line near the fence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly powerful
I got this fence charger so that I could put an electric fence around my garden because I have a Groundhog I have named Wilbur that continuously eats everything. I have done a lot of electrical work and I have installed true electric fence systems on farms before. I will tell you right now the ground that comes with this is a joke. All of the reviews that say this fence doesn't work good are probably using the ground rod that came with it. It's not even a foot long and not much bigger then the metal part of a screwdriver. Anybody who has ever dealt with electric fence will tell you the ground rod needs to be several feet in the ground. I took a 6 foot length of galvanized pipe and used an angle grinder to cut a point on one end. I then drove this in the ground and connected a ground clamp to it. I then connected the other end to the fence chargers ground Terminal. I then clipped the positive wire onto the electric fence and connected the other end to the fence charger, then plugged it in. Of course I had to test it. Let me just say that as an industrial maintenance person I have dealt with high voltage a lot over the years. I don't pay much attention to 110 anymore. I work on outlets and light fixtures without even turning off a breaker a lot of times. I get a little zap and just say Ouch and keep on going. I touched this fence and I felt like somebody grabbed my arm and tried to jank it out of socket at the shoulder. It literally hurt for a good 20 minutes, meaning my whole arm. This thing is way worse than touching a 110 wire in a power outlet. Anybody who says this thing is not strong enough, they must be using the ground that came with it. Install a good quality ground rod and make sure you have it clipped to your electric fence firmly and you will not be disappointed with this unit. This unit is absolutely perfect, I am just taking off one star because of the crappy ground rod they send with it. Like I said, get a cheap 6 foot long piece of galvanized pipe and drive it all the way in the ground and this thing will knock your socks off

5.0 out of 5 stars Well designed; our hogs respect it
We have small hogs, which can be tough on fences. We use electric fencing to keep them from rooting under our "real" fences, and to power electric netting for pasture management.
This small charger is sufficient to keep them contained, even with temptation on the other side of the fence line. The included charger cover is a nice upgrade, making it appropriate for use in the pasture with a battery vs. near buildings where there's access to 110 and weather protection.
Right now we have an electronet around our boar powered by this charger and it has kept him where he belongs despite the attempts of our sows to call him over for a visit.
Note: the paperwork included in the box implied there was a ground rod included but there was not. We just grounded to a 1/2 inch copper rod driven in 3' deep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good unit, can run off of a 12 V battery. Good for off grid.
I ordered this as a backup to my solar charged fence that keeps our farm’s livestock secure and the deer, raccoons, skunks and possums out of the garden. Trust me. It delivers quite a shock!! It appears to be well made. Temporary installation to see how well it performed was easy. The unit is compact and highly functional. Mine did not come with a ground rod either. Because it was just a trial and temporary use, I used the existing grounds with the regular fence. This is a good unit that is reasonable priced. I’m glad I have it as my other fence is getting old.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent fence charger with inadequate ground rod.
This is a very good fence charger, but don't even think about using the included 8-1/2-inch-long ground rod! - (pictured). I tested the system using the included "ground rod", and while the charger puts out over 10,000 volts (10KV) measured at its terminals, the inadequate ground's high impedance had it reading at the fence only 3.12 KW. Switching the grounding system to two 4' long rods (in damp soil near a pond), had the fence test reading over 10 KW (the upper limit of my tester). From the internet:
"Installing a minimum of 3 - 6 foot long ground rods, 10 feet apart will insure maximum efficiency in the operation of your electric fence system. Inadequate grounding is the most common failure in electric fence operation."
The fence charger is well-constructed, with adequate sealing from the weather and comes with an additional cover for better protection from the elements. There's a plug-in adapter for use with 100 - 240 VAC power as well as an adapter with battery clips to allow powering this from a 12-volt battery. This fence charger is efficient, with a maximum current draw of 1.16 amps only during its very brief output pulses. Between the output pulses there is no power consumption, thus average battery current draw is quite low at only 0.053 amps (53 milliamps). This low power consumption makes it practical to use this at remote installations, where no AC power is available, using only a moderate size 12 -volt battery (say 12-volt 7 AH or so) along with a small solar panel.
Additional info: Output pulse rep-rate is 57 per minute, so call it once a second - good! Overall, this fencer deserves a 5-star rating but for the inadequate ground rod and instructions suggesting this might be workable. It would also get a 5-star rating if the listing simply said, "ground rods not included".
