- Reviewed in Canada on November 22, 2021Verified PurchaseAfter years of searching for a Canadian guide to edible/medicinal forest/field trees and plants, I've finally found my definitive compendium: Edible and Medicinal Plants of Canada
This book is encyclopedic, with herbal/medicinal lore, great photos, detailed uses of plants and their parts, including necessary disclaimers and warnings in cases where using certain herbs is NOT recommended, for various, serious reasons, when building your natural apothecary.
It is well-organized, for ease in finding and identifying plants, is appropriate for teens through seniors. The book, while a paperback, is sturdy and substantial and must be included in a prepper's bugout bag.
Regardless where you may live in Canada (and parts of the US), there is much information and advice to be gleaned from the pages, such that the price can be deemed "very reasonable", compared to other books in this category.
I've only had the book for a week, and have already started taking it out with me on my walks with my dogs on local central Ontario forest, streams and field trails. I've been battling Lyme Tick Disease for over 13 years, and the indigenous medicine men/women in my region taught me that the medicine I need to extend my life and ease my symptoms is as close as my backyard, and they were correct!
A book of this kind ought to be in EVERY elementary and post-secondary school library, and its contents ought to be taught to our children from an early age. Just my opinion! As such, it is a good and most useful gift for pre-teens through adults.
A MUST-HAVE book! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 3, 2025Verified PurchaseThere is a lot of useful information in this book. Very thorough for each plant. It also has pictures to accompany them. Great book of you want to get back to the way out ancestors lived, foraging for medicine teas and other things.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 23, 2015Verified PurchaseThis is a beautiful and informative book.
It includes all of the major plant, tree, shrub, etc. species of Canada, each with a beautiful colour photo and/or artist's drawing. Each entry has a nice photo (some have multiple photos), as well as information on the medicinal use and edible (or inedible) parts of the plant. It also has an extremely important section on poisonous species to avoid. One of the nice little bonuses is that it often provides a few sentences on the historical uses of the plant by Aboriginal Peoples and settlers. This is a fun way to learn how the plant has been used over the centuries. The book was also put together by a team of academics and seasoned veterans, so it even includes some of the scientific evidence for the health benefits of each plant.
When the book arrived, I couldn't believe how great of a value it was. With so many colourful photos of beautiful plants and trees, this would even be a great coffee table book for those who aren't necessarily hikers. I myself plan to use it to learn all about the beautiful species of plants that inhabit Canada. When you see the photos and start identifying plants all around you (even in cities it is easy to spot them once you know them) you will never look at nature the same way again. All of the "weeds" I used to ignore I now see as beautiful plants that all have their own value, even if they aren't necessarily the thing people want on their manicured lawns.
If you are interested in learning about the plant species of Canada and/or want to learn the functional uses of plants in your local forest or field, this is the book for you. It is a great value and full of beautiful pictures and interesting facts. A+

- Reviewed in Canada on April 15, 2024Verified PurchaseIt's hefty but pretty small form-factor considering what's in it. I'm not done reading it but so far I find it really good, may update later once I finish it.
Also wanted to correct a 3 star review because they claimed this book says you can eat Lily of the valley's berries (the poisonous one). This is just a misunderstanding because Canada has two similarly named plants which berries aren't poisonous: false lily of the valley and wild lily of the valley. These look different than the other lily of the valley, they're also called Canada Mayflower if I recall.
