Fear Of The Dark

Fear Of The Dark
Solo nightmare, can't speak to the multiplayer aspect, but playing by yourself is an exercise in self-flagellation. You absolutely do not need PS Plus to play. Simply set game to Play Offline in Settings, or when at the Expedition Screen, select Solo Expedition. Patches incoming to address solo play quality of life; it remains to be seen how the game shapes up over time. It is a Rogue-like with a diminishing playable zone; as the circle of Night closes in, you are forced inward towards inevitable boss battles. Begin from level 1 each playthrough, and strive for efficient and lucky ascension, that you might slay Lords. A sort of Elden Ring randomizer, you'll never face the exact same circumstances, equipment or enemy sets between playthroughs. The daily time limit is quite brief (15 minutes or so) so you always feel harried to avoid remaining in one place for long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rougelike with a souls flare

*As of Jun. 4th the game has been patched to make solo less of a painful experience.

**As of right now there is only solo play and 3 person groups, with duo groups supposedly coming later down the line.

Nightreign is first and foremost a rougelike. This is not Elden ring with modified gameplay, this is a new rougelike with a souls/elden ring flare over it. Over the course of three days you will grow stronger, find treasures, and fight bosses in hopes of defeating the main last boss of the run. Every run is a full reset outside of equippable relics that give you advantages. As a pure solo player I can say this: I love playing this game but it is very very difficult. That difficulty however is why I was drawn to this game in the first place as rougelikes are always about overcoming to get that perfect run- every run is a bit more knowledge gained, a new hit on a boss that you couldnt scratch before, a new enemy defeated, a new moveset learned, etc. This is where the decision is on Nightreign: if you want more souls/elden ring you should look elsewhere, if you want a challenging rougelike with a soulslike/elden coat of paint this game delivers 100%.

1.0 out of 5 stars This game is such a huge disappointment.

This game is such a huge disappointment. Save your money and do a full speed run thru of any random area of the regular version of Eldenring and then delete all of your progress and try it again that’s the concept of this game. I’m a huge fan of dark souls and eldenring but this game stinks. They should have made another add on to the original game

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a good Souls game
Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2025

-The rogue elements were not done well.
-The upgrades and power ups are weak.
-Some bosses are overdone, things like their health pool, blinding particle effects, and movement across the map.
    -Solo isn’t balanced well.
    -Completion rewards are mediocre.
    -Luck based gameplay and difficulty.
-Multiplayer is frustrating half of the time with people not working as a team.
-Rushing around a game on a timer isn’t ideal for entertainment. Especially in a Souls game.
-Fun should be the priority for entertainment, then challenge is absolutely fine when applicable. Challenge was prioritized.

Some of the past Souls appeal was the environment. Taking in visuals, sounds, and atmosphere. That’s not happening much when rushing around on an unknown timer.

I did complete most of the bosses, but the solo gameplay not being well thought out was a deal breaker. It was more frustrating than fun, although doable with practice. Additionally, the multiplayer is just too flawed, too chaotic, and doesn’t work well enough to be considered a fun way to spend my time.

2 stars for a Souls game, sad. Should have released Bloodborne 2 or Dark Souls 4.
