Bad Disc, Good Movie.
3 out of 5 stars
Bad Disc, Good Movie.
Very good movie, looks fantastic on my 75 inch 4k tv. I always liked the dune stories only problem I have is the 4K disc seems to have some kind of issue where it stops around the 40 minutes left in the movie mark then after about 20 seconds or more starts playing again after skiping a bit of the movie. I got Â鶹Çø to replace it and that disc has the same issue around the same time frame (pic) very strange... I got the 4K disc with the Blu-ray disc and the digital code, it's the one that has bilingual on the cover as I've seen another one out there with the same discs and code but that doesn't have the bilingual. I have a Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Player with Dolby Vision UBPX800M2

The use of real spaces and locations gave the 'real' feel that much CGI can't manage even yet. The cinematography was good... at one point, you see a guild highliner disgorging minute little interface craft... and the highliner seems large. The interface craft descended to land, and they are like a massive sphere where the ramp down could support 25 or 30 files marching side by side and the entire thing would have enough internal volume for an office building. They play a lot with perspective to convey how big some things are. The soundtrack also had a lot to do with the cinematography - the sound and the visual aspects were harmonized in conveying non-narrative information.

The story follows the book (mind you, I read the book in the 1980s). It is definitely closer to the book than the 1980s movie of the same name. The actors were good, some even excellent.

It has periods of action, but there are more languid and rich periods of contemplation or where some internal drama was being explored. That's appropriate for a book like Dune and the size and scope of the vision where that vision included a lot of internal growth and change. It has, in those sections, more of a European film sensibility than the typically action-laden US fare.

I liked the casting for Gurney Halleck, Duncan Idaho, Duke Leto, Jessica and Paul Atreides. Having Bautista as Raban was fitting. Piter Devries was creepy. Thifur was not what I expected, but for what he was (a strategy and computation engine), it was interesting. The version of Yueh in this movie was I thought well cast and acted.

If I had any points of minor criticism, I'd say that folks who hadn't read the book would have not had enough to fully grasp Paul's battle with the angry Fremen (forget the name of the character) and the way that was handled. I know the Fremen were meant to be enigmatic, but for the uninitiated, they were a bit confusing (my wife needed some fill in to make sense of their actions). A bit the same with the Bene Gesserit.

Set design was a pleasant surprise. The Harkonen base the Atreides took possession of, Caldan, and the various dessert scenes were engaging. There costuming was better than the 1980s movie - stillsuits were plausible looking, the Sardaukar looked more like soldiers than a hazmat team (the 1980s look), and other choices were well made. They spent time and money to imbue the setting and the details with verisimilitude and a sense of depth. And Baron Harkonen was dressed not fantastically, but in a stark and understated way that let Starsguard's performance be what mattered. Good choices all around.

Overall, I look very much forward to the second movie and will buy the blu ray when it is available. I think we finally have a decent version of the book. I would expect that if the second movie (the second portion of the book) is as well done, there would probably be an impetus to try to do some of the ongoing story that was told in the other books of the Dune continuity.

I gave many five stars to many different movie genres. But when it comes to Masterpieces, Villeneuve has done it again. My first encounter with his work was BLADE RUNNER 2049 and mark my words, you can find the same incredible quality in DUNE. It is majestic, realistic and riveting. It is original, new and unexpected.

I love special effects and interlink stories. I bought 2012, AQUAMAN, TWISTER and I¡¯m still adding to my collection every new Marvel¡¯s MCU movies and many others of the same genre for those same reasons and I find them very entertaining. So, that would not be a surprise if I tell that I own the theatrical and extended DUNE versions of David Lynch, but I never been interested to get any further after, no more than I was interested to read the books. Why this one, then ? Simple, I just wanted to see what Villeneuve has done with it. And it was such a marvelous experience.

It is well known that DUNE is an old science fiction, but it is also well known that it gave birth to the following ones, like the Star Wars to name a few. It also has been produced many times in the past in a attempt to reach the level of this last production and, I would say now, without the success of this one. I¡¯m reaching my 70s, DUNE is a classic of my youth. Villeneuve must have understood the heart of the story for getting out of the path that was taken so far and even if DUNE was considerate as ¡°to old¡± compared to the new science fiction era, he miraculously made it truly believable for this present time. The image is so stunning and breathtaking that I could almost feel the desert sand penetrate my lungs while I was watching, and I do recommend that you are looking at the special features and the work that has been done if only to understand what the desert really is. The performance of the actors brings back an emotional band that was missing in the previous versions of it, and the Fremen were introduced as a vital part of the story from the very beginning in this one, which was also neglected in the past. Even the soundtrack is amazing.

I have to admit that I¡¯m constantly on a hunt in an attempt to find one of those gems. God, that I love this one!... My only disappointment is that I have now to wait until the end of 2023 to see what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well-done portrayal of the first book
Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2022

First, a disclaimer: I last read Dune more than 40 years ago, so my recollection of the book is suspect at best.

Still, this movie seemed to capture the feel of the book far better than the 1984 movie which tried to show too much at once and ended up just being more Hollywood than Herbert. This movie captures more of the feel of the book and scenes in the movie are eerily like I imagined them when reading the book. I liked this movie because it surprised me with the depth they went to to portray the strange world of this story. You'd think that more detail might put off people who haven't read the book, but I think the greater detail was well chosen to pull you into the movie and make you feel more familiar with this strange environment; to make you feel just as much a part of it as someone who had read the book. Most movies gloss over these details in favor of the "high points".

The book that the movie came from was quite a creative piece of storytelling. It presented a universe in a remote future where humanity had spread to far worlds and adapted in strange ways to their new environments. Still, even as the environment is very strange, those who people it are still human. As odd and complicated as the elements of the story are, they are still believable because the characters are written well.

Dune is the story of how knowledge, intelligence, and respect overcome great power and treachery. A Duke is asked to come to another world by the emperor to replace the family that had been running it for centuries, if I'm not mistaken. Also, it wasn't just any world, but the only world that produced civilization's most rare and necessary substance - a very special "spice". The Duke knew that the existing ruler would not take his displacement lightly. On top of that, he wondered why the emperor had chosen him to replace the old family. The Duke prepared himself as best he could for attack, but when it came, it was far worse than he imagined. His house was almost utterly destroyed, but then, this story is not about the Duke.

Although the movie, as I understand it, doesn't even cover all of the contents of the first book, it is very watchable on its own since it doesn't leave you at a cliff-hanger as a television series will often do. Still, I look forward to the sequel since I know that there is so much more to come.
