- Reviewed in Canada on July 28, 2025Verified PurchaseDavid Lynch’s Room to Dream is far more than a traditional biography—it’s a disorienting, immersive dual narrative that reflects the very essence of Lynch’s artistic philosophy. Co-authored with journalist Kristine McKenna, the book cleverly alternates between McKenna’s thoroughly researched biographical chapters and Lynch’s deeply personal, often impressionistic responses. This creates a dynamic push-pull tension, as if the book itself were a meditation on memory, interpretation, and truth.
What makes Room to Dream exceptional is its refusal to reduce Lynch to a neat storyline. His creative process—spiritual, intuitive, sometimes maddeningly vague—is laid bare, but not decoded. That’s a strength. Whether he’s discussing Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, or Twin Peaks, Lynch reveals just enough to intrigue without demystifying the strange alchemy behind his work.
There are surprises, too: stories about his Midwestern childhood, his obsessive approach to sound design, his unwavering dedication to Transcendental Meditation—all told in his unmistakable voice. At times, he sounds like a Zen master; at others, a mischievous outsider artist. It’s alternately funny, strange, and tender.
A note for readers: If you're expecting a linear Hollywood memoir, this isn't it. But if you're open to a genre-bending, creatively structured reflection of one of cinema’s most enigmatic minds, Room to Dream is a rewarding experience.
Bottom Line: Whether you're a die-hard Lynch fan or simply fascinated by the creative mind, this book invites you not just to read, but to feel your way through. Highly recommended for anyone who believes that the artistic process is as important as the product.

Not a typical biography in the sense that every second chapter is co written by the author, Room to Dream is most likely to appeal to Lynch fans and artists . What this book lacks in critical dissection however it makes up for in its reverence for the creative process and genuine love for the art of doing . Starting with Lynch’s childhood and his wonder at everything from the mystery of woods to women we are led to the realization along with him that his true calling is wanting to live the ‘art life’. From moving painting to moving pictures we are given a glimpse not so much into the meaning of his work as the process and uncompromising vision . I would say this book suffers from too high an esteem for subject matter and in a sense is not a true raw and real biography . Instead if you yourself are an aspiring artist or Lynch buff it is likely to appeal to you for it’s visionary quality that sometimes reaches literal spiritual proportions (One does get an insight into Lynch’s spiritual growth along with the ride) in the somewhat self indulgent rapture of it’s subject matter .

5.0 out of 5 stars Brillant

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and fascinating : biography as dialogue. If you love Lynch, you need to read this!
Verified PurchaseI am startled and dismayed at the negative and cynical reviews on here. This does not match my experience of the book at all. It is true to say there is no scandal or critical dissection of either the work or the man here. However, it is NOT hagiography in any way, shape or form. Equally, Lynch does not dissect his films or art here- again, I would never have expected that. What you do get is biography as dialectic. In alternate chapters, you get a conventional biography by Kristine Mckenna, then Lynch's own personal perspective on the events described by McKenna. He sometimes agrees. sometimes contradicts, sometimes goes off at a tangent: I found this both fascinating and charming. The book does not dissect the work, rather it sheds light on events by well-researched interviews and comments from collaborators, producers, actors and friends, then reflected through Lynch's own idiosyncratic lens. This is extremely enjoyable to read, remarkably unpretentious and full of small details which you can then use to link with the work,. It's not a tabloid cut and paste hack job, not is it a pretentious cahiers du cinema opus. I loved it and really felt it gave small but vital insights into the man and the work. I would recommend this to anyone with an open mind, providing you remember it is neither a critical dissection nor a muckraking gossipmongers delight. Time enough for these when Lynch the man is no longer with us. A delight, and strongly recommended! .

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Verified PurchaseI was reading this before David Lynch passed away recently and then after. A very sad yet humbling and inspiring series of moments for me. You will feel like you were best friends with David reading this. Its a Chronicle of his life, views, and art experiences and is a fascinating, exciting and uplifting read. Highly recommended and a great companion book to read is LYNCH ON LYNCH. This book is more about his views, experiences, and process as opposed to in depth film discussion on his movies. Brilliantly written and well thought out, I couldn't put this book down! R.I.P. Mr Lynch. You will never be forgotten and many thanks for the creative madness and works you left behind, such as this powerful book!
