Rin’s story continues in this acclaimed sequel to The Poppy War—an epic fantasy combining the history of twentieth-century China with a gripping world of gods and monsters.
The war is over.
The war has just begun.
Three times throughout its history, Nikan has fought for its survival in the bloody Poppy Wars. Though the third battle has just ended, shaman and warrior Rin cannot forget the atrocity she committed to save her people. Now she is on the run from her guilt, the opium addiction that holds her like a vice, and the murderous commands of the fiery Phoenix—the vengeful god who has blessed Rin with her fearsome power.
Though she does not want to live, she refuses to die until she avenges the traitorous Empress who betrayed Rin’s homeland to its enemies. Her only hope is to join forces with the powerful Dragon Warlord, who plots to conquer Nikan, unseat the Empress, and create a new republic.
But neither the Empress nor the Dragon Warlord are what they seem. The more Rin witnesses, the more she fears her love for Nikan will force her to use the Phoenix’s deadly power once more.
Because there is nothing Rin won’t sacrifice to save her country . . . and exact her vengeance.

The plot twists are around every corner and they are nothing short of extraordinary. Would 100% recommend book 1 and 2 of the poppy war trilogy. Time for the third.

- Reviewed in Canada on August 17, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseEasily one of the best books I have ever read. I felt betrayed, loved and disgusted. R.F Kuang shows the duplicity of human nature and how easy it is to be manipulated if u let yourself fall into a pattern of ignorance. With loveable characters, found family, badass (a lil insane) fmcs!

- Reviewed in Canada on March 30, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseBought a new, not used, book at full price. But what I recieved was a book with notable wear in the cover. The cover is creased, bent, and worn down along the edges. Some of the pages are even coming out. I've never recieved a "new" book in this condition before. I've recieved used books in better condition than this "new" book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put it down
Verified PurchaseI absolutely love this series. It is a very refreshing read and I can't say I've read anything like it before. Once I read the first book I had to buy the second and even though it took a bit to get into it again the latter 3/4 of the book were impossible to put down, especially near the end. I'll talk about what I liked and what I thought could have been better, even though to me this series is already a must read. Spoilers.
What I liked:
- I really liked that the book drew its plots from eastern history during the war. I unfortunately did not have the chance to learn much about the Eastern side of the war during school, and it is not touched upon much at all, really, in western curriculums. As someone with an Asian background I had always wondered about the downfall of China before and after the war, how Taiwan became the way it was and the role of the west in all of this. This book is obviously fantasy, but having its main characters being from Nikara really put me into that perspective and it makes the read even more interesting and mentally stimulating to be able to draw parallels from their world to ours. Not that it is necessarily fact but it makes you reflect on the role of the west in the war, and I will certainly read up on some other historical novels/autobiographies after this.
- Extending on that point the originality of the book is also refreshing. As a lover of fantasy I find a lot of fantasy books to always revolve around the same "world". I love witches, dragons, fae, vampires, demons, angels, elves, etc. as much as the next person but it can get a bit repetitive and I like the author's take on religion and magic here.
- The characters are unapologetic. What I like about Rin, and all the characters in the book is that they kill and commit crimes without hesitation. They are merciless, and selfish, and they lie to those they love to save themselves. They do not hesitate to perform atrocities, and the way Rin descends into madness - the reader knows what is going to happen but can't stop reading out of morbid fascination, and it is very satisfying to see the characters act on their desires without moral, whereas with some other books it can be incredibly frustrating because the protagonist is always trying to protect and not kill innocents, or be the bigger person and not kill their enemies, even though it makes zero sense for the character if they are supposed to come from desperate backgrounds and harbour anger, or if they are supposed to be assassins and witches or generally a "badass" character. Like the sort of satisfaction "the boys" gives you.
- It's also very realistic the way war is fought over years and months with years if not decades of preparation, not just over in one battle that took only weeks to arrange.
Now onto some improvements, but just for me personally:
- I feel like Rin was obsessed with Altan for too long, and then all of a sudden she wasn't and Altan was very rarely mentioned after. Everything was about Altan in the first half of the book, and I found some passages unnecessary.
- This is a bit selfish, but I wish the author had written more for when Rin shared moments of friendships, and happy or funny times with the other characters. I loved their relationships so much but I feel like there was no reprieve throughout the book - it was all pretty depressing and doom and gloom. I understand that's the nature of war and Rin is supposed to be unfeeling, but selfishly would have enjoyed the book a lot more if there were more vulnerable, feeling, joyful moments where I could just smile a bit.
Thats it :) Go buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Brutal Descent into Chaos
Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseWhen I thought The Poppy War had already wrecked me emotionally, The Dragon Republic came along and doubled down on the heartbreak, horror, and sheer brilliance. This book is a masterclass in emotional devastation, complex character arcs, and deeply researched historical inspiration.
Reading this felt like riding a rollercoaster with no brakes. I was smiling one minute, sobbing the next, feeling hope only to have it crushed underfoot by the brutal realities of war. Rin continues to be one of the most complicated, frustrating, and heartbreakingly human protagonists I’ve ever read. I found myself loving her, fearing for her, wanting to shake her—and not always understanding her.
What sets this book apart is its unflinching portrayal of war and its consequences. The brutality is sickening, but never gratuitous. It’s rooted in real-world history—specifically the Sino-Japanese War and 20th-century China—and the parallels are haunting. The way R.F. Kuang intertwines fantasy with real historical trauma is nothing short of genius, and it makes for an incredibly hard, yet meaningful read.
The Dragon Republic is not just a fantasy novel—it’s an emotional experience. It’s painful, immersive, and at times almost too much to bear, but I was completely captivated. I don’t know if I’m ready for The Burning God—my heart can barely take it—but I know I’ll be reading it anyway.
