About the Author

When Dav Pilkey was a kid, he was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. Dav was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hallway every day. Luckily, Dav loved to draw and make up stories. He spent his time in the hallway creating his own original comic books -- the very first adventures of Dog Man and Captain Underpants. In the second grade, Dav's teacher ripped up his comics and told him he couldn't spend the rest of his life making silly books. Fortunately, Dav was not a very good listener.

When Dav Pilkey was a kid, he was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. Dav was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hallway every day. Luckily, Dav loved to draw and make up stories. He spent his time in the hallway creating his own original comic books - the very first adventures of Dog Man and Captain Underpants.

In college, Dav met a teacher who encouraged him to illustrate and write. He won a national competition in 1986 and the prize was the publication of his first book, World War Won. He made many other books before being awarded the 1998 California Young Reader Medal for Dog Breath, which was published in 1994, and in 1997 he won the Caldecott Honor for The Paperboy.

The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby, published in 2002, was the first complete graphic novel spin-off from the Captain Underpants series and appeared at #6 on the USA Today bestseller list for all books, both adult and children's, and was also a New York Times bestseller. It was followed by Super Diaper Baby 2: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers, also a USA Today bestseller. The unconventional style of these graphic novels is intended to encourage uninhibited creativity in kids.

His stories are semi-autobiographical and explore universal themes that celebrate friendship, tolerance, and the triumph of the good-hearted.

Dav loves to kayak in the Pacific Northwest with his wife.

These books are colorful, fun, and exciting for younger kids. My 6 year old really fell in love with this series and as a result, became a much,.much better reader. There's a good amount of bathroom humor in it, but I'll take that trade off! My son finds it funny and keeps him interested in reading!

    This is one of the first books that I've ever red! I'm 13 and I have Dyslexia and it makes it hard to read stuff some times. But this book was great for that, for me it wasn't that hard to read! This is one of the books that got me into reading. And now 5 years later I'm starting to write my own books!

    Now I would like to point out that there are a lot of parents that are angry 😠 about the potty humor. But I would like to say Dave was just trying to be funny, and I support him!

    I mean he could have went a bit better on the language since it's a kid's book! But in total it's a great book! Witch is why I gave it 5 stars!

    Both my young boys have comet o love the dog man books, they have the whole series and get super excited when a new book is due out. This was no exception, and it kept them quiet for a couple of days.

    As a parent while I don't love the lack of grammar, spelling and general cartoon style of these books, what I do love is the fact they get the kids interested in books, and actually reading something. The books are good value and they constantly go back and revisit them, also the tutorials in each book on how to draw characters from the book have added a lot of mileage and life to them.

    Overall, you can't really go wrong with dog man, and his new spin-off Cat Kid. Good mostly clean fun, and very helpful in persuading less than avid readers that books can be a lot of fun!

    My daughter loves dog man, so she needed the new addition to add to her collection. I seen a bunch of reviews/comments based on the fact that there is the mention of death in the story. They reference the death in previous books as well, Grime and Punishment. It is a main characters back story. If your child is completely disturbed by death maybe don't buy the books, but in my opinion if your child becomes upset by the situation it's showing that your child has compassion and empathy towards others misfortunes. It is not done in a vulgar violent way. It just mentions it. If your child is completely hysterical over it then this might be a good time to have a sit down with your child and explain the concept of death. My child is 8 and understands that people and animals die, it's not pleasant to think about but it does happen. If you or child can't handle it, I suggest maybe sticking to Curious George...
