About the Author
When Dav Pilkey was a kid, he was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. Dav was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hallway every day. Luckily, Dav loved to draw and make up stories. He spent his time in the hallway creating his own original comic books -- the very first adventures of Dog Man and Captain Underpants.
In college, Dav met a teacher who encouraged him to illustrate and write. He won a national competition in 1986 and the prize was the publication of his first book, World War Won. He made many other books before being awarded the 1998 California Young Reader Medal for Dog Breath, which was published in 1994, and in 1997 he won the Caldecott Honor for The Paperboy.
The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby, published in 2002, was the first complete graphic novel spin-off from the Captain Underpants series and appeared at #6 on the USA Today bestseller list for all books, both adult and children's, and was also a New York Times bestseller. It was followed by Super Diaper Baby 2: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers, also a USA Today bestseller. The unconventional style of these graphic novels is intended to encourage uninhibited creativity in kids.
His stories are semi-autobiographical and explore universal themes that celebrate friendship, tolerance, and the triumph of the good-hearted.
Dav loves to kayak in the Pacific Northwest with his wife.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 7, 2020Verified PurchaseThanks Dav Pilkey, I bought this for an 8 year old who was behind in reading, and had no interest in even trying to read any books. I personally thought these books seemed ridiculous and wasn’t going to buy them at first. However my son read them at school and really wanted them. So since he wouldn’t read anything else I figured what do I have to loose. Turned out this was the best investment I could make! He has been reading dog man for a few months now and has progressed farther then I could’ve ever imagined. He loves these books and could hardly read them 8 months ago. But he would look at the pictures and flip through the books everyday and try to read them the best he could. Now he still reads them everyday and gets most of the words and still loves to reread them over and over! Thank you for these dog man series! I recommend them to anyone! My 6 year old daughter is starting to enjoy them as well! The craziness of these books makes my children find them hilarious and want to keep reading more! The Dog Man books are a must have and have added a fun level of reading to a child whom did not want to read anything before.

- Reviewed in Canada on February 11, 2025Verified PurchaseGreat books for kids
- Reviewed in Canada on July 27, 2019Verified PurchaseCaptain underpants and the dog man series by Dav Pilkey have done what seemed pretty impossible despite my prior attempts - they have got both our kids reading in preference to pestering for screen time on laptops/tablets etc.
They're pretty simple to read, and entertaining if you're 7-8 years old! Being comic style books they're best read by yourself - they don't lend themselves to me reading them as a bedtime story as they're very visual books. The kids absolutely love them though, and we now have all the Dog Man books, and most of the Captain Underpants series.
Highly recommended silly books for kids - yes they're silly, but as above they've sparked our kids interest in reading over having their minds sucked out by Youtube - which to me, is worth its weight in gold.

- Reviewed in Canada on September 17, 2020Verified PurchaseThis entire series is absolutely brilliant. My 6 year old is entirely enthralled and it is so great for his imagination. The writing is quite witty, illustrations are colourful and cute , and the underlying themes of friendship , overcoming obstacles and making good choices when it’s easier to do the opposite are weaved throughout the storylines .. kids end up learning these life lessons while not even knowing it while they are reading. Totally recommended !!
