Product description
Originally aired in 1969, The War Games marked the end of an era for the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton), following him and his companions Zoe and Jamie as they land in a battlefield that appears to be a World War I military zone—but all is not as it seems. They soon discover that soldiers from different historical periods have been abducted and are being manipulated in a cruel game. As they work to uncover the mystery behind the War Lord and his twisted experiments, the Doctor faces one of his most difficult challenges. For the first time, these original episodes have been meticulously colorized and enhanced with updated visual effects edited into a new, 90-minute feature-length experience. With updated sound and a new score, this version of The War Games offers both fans and newcomers even more ways to watch the much-loved classic story. In addition, the episode will also feature the Second Doctor's never-before-seen regeneration into the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee), alongside recovered footage not seen since the original broadcast. This release includes loads of special features including extended shots, interviews and more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new colorized Full Season. Must have
Verified PurchaseI very much enjoyed this color sharpness upgrade.
Allowed the story and acting to shine
The movie length version was even better!
I hope they do this to all the black and white era episodes
Really improved my enjoyment of Patrick Troughton and his companions
First rate story and writing and it feels like a nice re-edit
Now I see why this was so popular in its time
Great stuff
Hoping for more!!!!!!!
While this is advertised as a story, it really is the complete season so another season upgrade is completed but that’s not immediately apparent
Very worth the price

3.0 out of 5 stars The original is better
Verified PurchaseAs the title suggests, this is a nice oddity - at times, but it is not a replacement for the original.
These cut down versions just don’t add anything at all for me. It’s rather odd that some of the most prominent voices in the world of Doctor Who see cutting down old stories as some kind of triumph, considering the amount of missing material from these eras. I’m not sure if they are really drawing in any new audiences to “classic” era, fine it makes a good tv special, but I personally don’t really care if there are any more colourised versions of old black and white stories. These should be viewed as inferior alternative versions of classic B&W stories. It pains me to give a negative review, but it’s not just for the sake of it. Kudos to certain aspects, the colour looks impressive - at times, whilst I completely prefer the original, the *inclusion* of Troughton regeneration into Pertwee is an impressive spectacle, but it completely ruins the mystery that hung over Doctor Who at the time of broadcast. As much as I respect the work of Mark Ayers, I have not enjoyed his additional scores at all. Particularly on this release, the original score by Dudley Simpson does not need reworking, and it sounds really jarring. As for the inclusion of Murray Gold’s Master theme over the War Chief, that really doesn’t make any sense at all. The actual soundtrack options, surround and Atmos mixes sound great, apart from the new music score, which as in the case of The Daleks in colour is taking away rather than adding anything new to the story. These new audio mixes by Mark Ayers are more his forte than adding new music imho.
The lack of extras is disappointing, a commentary track is included, but unless you absolutely love this version of The War Games, it is t much to write home about.
No option to put 2.5 stars, hence an over generous 3 star review, sadly The War Games in colour doesn’t come highly rated, the original B&W four hour log version in the other hand is epic, and at least that’s included here

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap Tin case with only two slots for 4 discs
Verified PurchaseThis is a 4 disc set. 1 Blu Ray and a DVD stacked on top of each other on one side, two other DVDs stacked on top of each other on the other side. Not even a tray for each disc or a double tray. No, just one slot for two discs each. This is as cheap as it gets. Even the Savages had a double slot on one side. Wow, just wow how cheap this is. On the Blu Ray is the only new stuff. The remaining DVDs seem to be the exact copies of the previously released set. I therefore returned the set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Collectable Doctor's
Verified PurchaseExcellent set I did actually like the colour version also pleased the complete B/W series was included on this 4 disc set which is also nicely presented in its metal case, picture and sound quality are also excellent on both versions.
Overall great value for money and worth the asking price just add it to your collection while its still available.
