Product description

Originally aired in 1969, The War Games marked the end of an era for the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton), following him and his companions Zoe and Jamie as they land in a battlefield that appears to be a World War I military zone—but all is not as it seems. They soon discover that soldiers from different historical periods have been abducted and are being manipulated in a cruel game. As they work to uncover the mystery behind the War Lord and his twisted experiments, the Doctor faces one of his most difficult challenges. For the first time, these original episodes have been meticulously colorized and enhanced with updated visual effects edited into a new, 90-minute feature-length experience. With updated sound and a new score, this version of The War Games offers both fans and newcomers even more ways to watch the much-loved classic story. In addition, the episode will also feature the Second Doctor's never-before-seen regeneration into the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee), alongside recovered footage not seen since the original broadcast. This release includes loads of special features including extended shots, interviews and more!

I very much enjoyed this color sharpness upgrade.
Allowed the story and acting to shine

The movie length version was even better!

I hope they do this to all the black and white era episodes

Really improved my enjoyment of Patrick Troughton and his companions

First rate story and writing and it feels like a nice re-edit

Now I see why this was so popular in its time

    Great stuff

    Hoping for more!!!!!!!

While this is advertised as a story, it really is the complete season so another season upgrade is completed but that’s not immediately apparent
    Very worth the price

Excellent set I did actually like the colour version also pleased the complete B/W series was included on this 4 disc set which is also nicely presented in its metal case, picture and sound quality are also excellent on both versions.
Overall great value for money and worth the asking price just add it to your collection while its still available.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than The Daleks In Colour but still a frivolous exercise
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 21, 2025

When I reviewed "The Daleks In Colour" I said no-one was eagerly awaiting the next one. Well, here it is anyway, 240 minutes "condensed" down to 96 with new effects and music. Overall the colourisation is sympathetic and far better than the garish crayoning that so marred The Daleks. Palettes have been kept consistent and you actually wish the whole 10 parts could have been done this way but otherwise left alone. Of course a few floaty artifacts remain but that's inevitable given the technology.

This version is slightly extended from the 90-minute version that was on TV. That version absolutely ventured into incoherence and the extra time has actually helped a tiny bit, adding a couple of moments that explain how some characters know certain things. The story is still wildly chopped about and jumps locations illogically so the extra minutes don't save it. Some extra music cues are irritating, the enforced inclusion of new Who iconography grates and the added model work is actually fine and sympathetic, surprisingly.

The Daleks was also a dreadful package because it overcharged for no added content. This package is rather better -- there are about half an hour of featurettes on the model work, re-incorporated footage and colour design. There's also a rather excellent commentary that made me, if not actually approve of, at least understand better the motivations for this release. Overall I was intending a 2-star review but the commentary adds an extra star.

As before the remaining discs in the package (3 of them) are the previous DVD release of The War Games with new disc art but no other changes. Again there's no booklet just a Who-tat leaflet. Artwork is attractive but. as I keep saying, don't get the steelbook unless you've been getting them all.

Verdict: A solid 3-star release. The original DVD set is easily a 5-star set but you probably already have that. If not then yay!

There may well be more of these. I wonder if Dalek Invasion of Earth is next (well, it won't be The Ark!)

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap Tin case with only two slots for 4 discs
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 23, 2025

This is a 4 disc set. 1 Blu Ray and a DVD stacked on top of each other on one side, two other DVDs stacked on top of each other on the other side. Not even a tray for each disc or a double tray. No, just one slot for two discs each. This is as cheap as it gets. Even the Savages had a double slot on one side. Wow, just wow how cheap this is. On the Blu Ray is the only new stuff. The remaining DVDs seem to be the exact copies of the previously released set. I therefore returned the set.

The bluray contains a tiny bit more content than was broadcast and is overall a worthwhile addition to the library.
