Doctor Who: The Complete David Tennant Collection (Blu-ray)
Doctor Who: The Complete David Tennant Collection is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of BBC with AVC encoded 1080p transfers in 1.78:1. Tennant's tenure in the role is notable for a reason in addition to its length — it occurred during the switchover from standard definition to high definition, at least if you include the so-called "Specials", which were in essence a limited run set of new episodes, and which are part of this expansive set. Therefore, fans need to expect something akin to a two different Doctors, with Series 2, 3 and 4 obvious upscales, and at least most of the specials looking considerably better, having been culled from native high definition sources. (I haven't been able to find any really verifiable information about this, but to my eyes the first special, "The Next Doctor", looks like an upscale to me as well, something bolstered by the fact that the Confidential about that special is in 480i on the Supplements list I've included below, while the rest of the special Confidential episodes are all in 1080i.) There are persistent upscaling "bugaboos" throughout the presentation of these upscales, including noticeable stairstepping and signs of digital sharpening (with some resultant haloing), but detail levels can often be surprisingly strong, at least given an understanding of context. The palette also looks decently fresh and vivid. Things improve markedly with regard to most of the specials, and some of the other supplemental material, like the animated specials and the two part "The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith", from The Sarah Jane Adventures, a perhaps understandably lesser remembered Doctor Who spinoff (see screenshots 21 through 25 for a look at the animated fare as well as the Sarah Jane episodes). In the native high definition material, fine detail levels enjoy a rather considerable uptick, and the palette looks nicely suffused and vivid. Even in the native HD presentations, CGI can at least occasionally look a little soft. My score is a kind of "average" spread across the entire content of this expansive set: Series 2, 3, and 4 probably hover in the 2.5 - 3.5 range in terms of video quality, while the native HD material is at least at 4.0 levels and I'd argue up toward 4.5 levels quite a bit of the time.

Doctor Who: The Complete David Tennant Collection features some surprisingly robust sounding DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mixes, with consistent engagement of the surround channels as well as some floorboard rattling LFE, at least on occasion. There are occasional goofy but nonetheless enjoyable sound effects, including some swirling panning effects as the TARDIS makes its way to new locations (both spatially and temporally). Some urban or at least relatively crowded sequences also provide good opportunities for well placed ambient environmental effects. Dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly throughout this problem free track.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 6, 2012Verified PurchaseI came to like Doctor Who, despite my initial inclination to dislike it. I watched one episode - hmm, not bad. I saw 2 edisodes - damn, I'm starting to like this. By 3 episodes - I had a bad feeling I was going to end up buying the whole show. And I did. Worth it though. It is a fun, humerous show with adventure and drama thrown into the mix. Lots of drama. Did I mention the drama? Never boring, the only not really negative comment about the show I have to make is be prepared for tears. It seems like every episode is filled with tears. Rose's, the Doctors, side characters, you - everybody's crying. If you happen to get on a Doctor Who marathon after buying this (which I did) - be prepared to feel a bit bereft yourself when you finish this box set.
The look of the box set itself is fantastic. I have never seen so much work in a DVD collection. My only suggestion would be to get a case to hold the DVDs once you buy it. It looks nice and hold the DVDs securely, but sliding them in an out may end up scratching your discs.
A good buy. Can't wait to see how Matt Smith does in the other seasons.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 16, 2024Verified PurchaseI started streaming The Tennant series on one of the major streaming services in Canada and noticed the quality was very pixelated. When I saw the BluRay on sale I knew I had to watch David Tennant and Billie Piper in FHD. My 4K player up converts 1080p video on my 4K tv and it looks awesome. Great version. I'm hoping the BBC considers a 4K transfer for Ncuti's tenure.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 15, 2025Verified PurchaseGreat shipment! No damages at all. DVD's were all playable - no fog or scratches. Case wasn't damaged at all. However, for those purchasing the full collection, you don't need this one. The Chris Eccelson collection has pretty much everything that this one has - if I'd known that I would not have purchased this collection. Sure, the last two DVD's have a few interviews and a cartoon, some other trivia, but to me not worth it. But I purchased it and opened it, so I'm honest enough to keep it.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 13, 2022Verified PurchaseSuch an incredible price for all of 10's episodes! I love all the extra special features too! Just couldn't watch one of the animated episodes on the last disc. It played fine, it's just the graphics were terrifying! Kinda like watching cut scenes from a really awful Playstation 1 game. The other animated episode was fine!
If you're a fan of David Tennant and the 10th doctor, this is a must have for your collection.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 8, 2023Verified PurchaseUpdate (June 2024) - For anyone who might have discovered similar defects after return window closed: After posting this review, I discovered the same type of defects on another BBC set I own. It was well past the amazon return window, but I ended up getting friendly & responsive communication from BBC Customer Support at DVDSupport@bbc.com.
In my case, complications at the US distributor made it difficult for BBC Support to obtain a replacement set in quick fashion. I was kept updated on progress & the different things support looked into to ultimately get a replacement sent over. Glad to know that BBC values their customers & are willing to do their utmost to resolve a QC issue!

Original (November 2023): The 3 Star rating doesn't reflect on the Series at all. The series is fantastic! This is just to caution any buyer to inspect their discs once they receive this set.
I've purchased this series twice: once for myself in 2020 & again recently (2023) for a friend. The 14 discs in my copy = no issues. So we were surprised to find that second time around, 6 of the 14 discs had terrible manufacturing defects. Sharp chipping at disc edges, deep cracks in the disc plastic, and the protective resin layer on the playable side of the disc peeling away.
See the photos attached. Unfortunately the photos make the peeling look more like 'bubbles', but when touched, they lift from the surface. If played with, even gently, the resin coating will flake right off.
Again, nothing but love for all things Doctor Who, but this was a disappointing surprise. We ended up returning the second copy intended as a gift. Our friend ended up being weary of the quality control in this set's manufacturing & would rather stick to their DVD sets (which I'll admit, do have more interesting box art design than this one).
Our situation could be a one-off; hopefully, it is. Just the same, whenever picking up a multi-disc set, make sure to inspect the discs for this type of damage. Getting through a long set like this can take longer than the return window. It would not be fun to discover these defects after the return window has closed!

- Reviewed in Canada on August 7, 2024Verified PurchaseChristmas shopping for a David Tennant fan is not the easiest! My daughter swears by it that David Tennant is the best doctor...yet anything with him in it is so hard to find! This series has been well watched in this household. Both this series and seller are highly recommended. Product is new and in perfect condition.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 7, 2022Verified PurchaseProduct arrived in perfect condition and to my surprise contained every single episodes of Tennant, Christmas specials, off year specials, animated specials and even the Sarah Jane's episodes where Tennant stars. On top of that we have all the deleted scenes, commentary, video diaries, BBC Proms musical specials and so many things that is great for a Doctor Who fan such as myself. Great as a gift for both whovians and Tennant fans alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Tenth Doctor Blu ray Collection
Verified PurchaseJust received the blu ray collection. After checking each disc, they include all episodes and specials of David Tennant as the tenth doctor from 2006 to 2010. They also include the animated serials Dreamland and the Infinite Quest plus a special the Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith. Plenty of features to keep fans of the Whoniverse happy. No problems of playing the discs using my multi-region blu ray player in Australia.
