I picked this because of the DeWalt name. I have several DeWalt power tools and they all work fine and are all solidly made. This stud finder is like that too, and I also like it because it’s minimalist. Its use is simplified, its indications are clear and it’s reasonably accurate. The instructions are minimalist, too, which is maybe not so impressive. A message on the card advises the user to “read all instructions inside the card,” but the inside card has nothing to read. Just diagrams, in the Ikea style, without any writing. The only company that ever successfully pulled off Ikea-style iconic instructions is Ikea. This comes close but you’ll want to check the full instruction sheet PDF, which is easily found online although the card doesn’t mention it. The tool has an important warning indicator to show you when you’re holding it over a live AC wire in the wall. (Pro tip: Don’t drill there.) It's also useful to realize that this probes for capacitance, which can be a bit iffy, and the wall studs are edge-on to you, meaning you have to drill to hit a target maybe 1.5 inches wide. So I like to use some of those viciously powerful magnets to feel for the nails that are in the studs too, just to corroborate what the stud finder is telling me. One more thing I liked about this: It’s made in Vietnam, and I’m an ABC shopper whenever possible. So I’m calling this thing good value.
