Very light and efficient unit
This review is for the STEELITE 13-Inch 12-Amp 2-in-1 Electric Dethatcher and Scarifier. I ordered it almost a month ago, deep in the winter snow! It took a few weeks for the snow to finally melt which was then followed by an ice storm and 4 days without power. Finally things melted and dried enough to try this unit out. It arrived mostly assembled and all you have to do was to hook up the multiple pieces making up the handle and bolt them together, along with the dead man's spring loaded switch. It took about 20 minutes to do. Yesterday I finally got the opportunity to try it out. It came with the scarifier blades already attached so ran it over a small part of the lawn. i initially had the height as low as it would go which was a mistake because it chewed up the lawn quite a bit. I finally ended with it as high as the deck would go, or 1 notch lower. Deck height is very easily adjusted with a lever on the left front of the machine. It was very easy to roll over the lawn weighing only about 23 lbs. I couldn't believe how fast the catch bucket filled up! this machine was very efficient removing the brown, and some green grass as well as scarifying the soil. You can see the picture of the piles of removed dead grass that was less that 5 minutes work! I honestly didn't expect it to be so efficient. Replacing the scarifier with the dethatcher is a simple proces of using the included allen key as shown in the instruction booklet. One end of the blade shaft has a bearing, and the other end has a square drive socket that hooks in to the motor drive. It seemed to have plenty of power and didn't slow down at all during use. The frame is mostly plastic, but of the type that is flexible so it should stand up to a few bangs and bruises. The wheels are plastic as well, but the scarifier and dethatcher are made from steel. Because of it's 13" width, I would suggest it is not suitable for large lawns, but is ideal for smaller lawns. So far, my initial impression of the Steelite dethatcher is favourable. I will update this review in the future once I gain more experience with it if I find any issues. It does appear to be of light duty construction, but does seem adequate for the job. It is presently selling for about $169 with a $20 coupon.

    This machine is relatively easy to put together, 4 screws with a Phillips, and 4 twist on knobs. Changing out from dethatcher to scarifier blades only takes a minute using the included Allen key.

    Operation is pretty straightforward, the only really annoying part being the power cord dragging behind and getting in the way.

    Functionally, it did reach down fairly well to dethatch, it picked up more fresh grass than thatch. It mentions to pre-mow on the lowest setting for scarifying, but not so for raking (maybe it was assumed in the instructions, but not stated), I would suggest also mowing on a low setting before raking to get better performance.

    The main point on low performance is that the grass clipping collector does practically nothing, just heaps of grass are being left behind that I’m going to have to come back over and pick up.

    Owing to the convenience factors of cord and clipping pickup, I don’t think it’ll be a regularly used tool. Maybe every few years to dethatch instead f monthly as suggested.

    Works great, set it on #3 Height, would not go any lower, definitely gets up all the old grass that you could not with a rake. You still need to rake the yard though , I ended up with 20 piles of grass just in the back yard.

    Throw the grass catcher away, you wont be using it. One and a half months later my yard is looking great. Use Corn meal to put some nitrogen in the soil, you can get it at your local Feed Store 50 pound bag for like 12 bucks. That stuff is amazing what it does to your yard. Your grass will look gorgeous.. if you have some really bad spots in your yard or grass is hardly growing , I would treat for grub worms. I did that this year for the first time and all the areas in my yard that grass would not grow. It is growing now. Use Scott’s, safe for pets.
