Good game, minor hiccup with preorder bonus

- Reviewed in Canada on November 14, 2019Verified PurchaseImportant: I've been seeing a lot of reviews hammering on the product regarding the preorder content and that seems a bit unfair considering the game is pretty good. I had to contact 鶹 customer support for the preorder bonus code. I contacted them via online text chat in the morning and I got the code in the evening; same day. Minimal hassle and only took a couple minutes to talk to the rep. So my experience a positive one.
Moving on to the actual game, I'm part ways through and by no means remotely close to completing the game so just bare that in mind. Death Stranding is lately coined as being a walking simulator or parcel delivery simulator and I would mostly agree with those statements. It's a different kind of game. You are a courier connecting settlements together in a future post-apocalyptic isolationist world. I'm having fun exploring the open-world. Honestly, it feels a little like I'm playing MGSV with most of the combat taken out, replace desert (Afghanistan) environment with green rocky mountains (Iceland), and instead of Snake you play as Norman Reedus. Not the best analogy but I hope you get the point. I'm having a blast exploring the open-world and using new tools/vehicles/equipment as I progress in the story.
There is a solid online aspect to the game, not directly cooperative that you see other players, no, this is a single-player experience. You don't need a PS+ subscription, just need to be online; definitely not worth missing out on. I think this is one of the great parts of the game is the sense of being part of a community. As you progress, previous areas will have items/objects/structures left behind by other players. This could be as simple as ladders, ropes, and bridges, to name a few. These will improve your quality of life as you traverse through previous areas; see how other players made it around. It's pretty great feeling when you contribute by rebuilding roads or building charging stations that are intended to help you, but also see other players using them in their world because you get periodic notifications and "likes" when it happens. ("Likes" are sort of a leveling mechanic in the game, you get them from NPCs as well.)
I'm playing Death Stranding on the original PS4, not slim, not pro. The visual fidelity is amazing. No visible issues, solid framerate, and I haven't encountered any bugs. Looks great on 1080p but can only imagine how it would look at 4k with a PS4 Pro.

- Reviewed in Canada on November 12, 2019Verified PurchaseUPDATE:
I initially gave this 2 stars, and I think it was mostly because of the disingenuous preorder shenanigans 鶹 tried to pull on me. You guys are a trillion dollar megacorp and you're here pinching pennies with a nobody like me, smdh.
ANYWAY, I've since platinumed the game and if I docked the game for being slow, dull and contrived initially then... well that complaint still stands, but this game... this game! It's become one of my favourites in the PlayStation catalogue. Yes, Episode 3 is where the real vision of the game opens up, but there's still so much more that opens up to you after that. The game fully clicked with me in the latter half once I'd started making plans and acting on them (funny how that is, huh?) Yeah, the game makes you work your ass off to put up those ziplines, to hoard those materials, to lay out those strips of highway, to fight and claw your way through BT infested swamps, but damnit if it wasn't immensely satisfying once things are in place. Does it suck trying to get the Veteran Porter's social link up? (I'm calling them S-Links because damnit, that's what this game is: Spooky Persona). Yes, yes it does. Does it suck trying to make the First Prepper join the UCA? You bet. Does making the trek from Mama's Lab to Mountain Knot wear on you? Absolutely. But I see now that this is the intended experience. I thought to myself: am I playing the game wrong? Maybe I was, and it was discouraging. But really, don't be so serious. Take your time. Revel in the small victories. It'll make sense. This game is about slow and steady progress and that is such a genius thing to counteract our need for immediate gratification.
Because by the end, you're going to be flying around the map in your fancy ziplines. You're going to be bullying MULEs with your fully upgraded arsenal. You're going to deliberately get sucked in by the goo-Caspers just so you can farm chiral crystals. Speed and All-Terrain Skeletons will make terrain traversal easy. Trucks will allow you to move cargo en masse. It's a great feeling, but you'll have to work for it, and still it'll be more meaningful than any Epic God Level Legendary Breastplate of the No-Lifer +999 received from beating on an animatronic piñata.
---------------------------
Let me just get the low rating out of the way first. Chatted with 鶹 CS a few times and they refused to honour the preorder bonuses, claiming I did not qualify as I ordered in 2017 and furthermore, to contact Sony for the codes, if any. False advertising on 鶹 and/or Sony's part. A true shame.
As for the game itself, I'm too early in to give it a fair assessment. To no one's surprise, the game feels a lot like MGS V, for better or worse, from its UI to the animation systems, or the way in which missions are doled out with an emphasis on how you approach them as you navigate the open world. It's a unique post-apocalyptic sci-fi tale with all the classic Kojima trappings: heavy exposition with nonsensical jargon, toilet humour, a near seamless blend of gameplay with cutscenes, emphasis on stealth and other modes of physical interaction that don't just involve shooting things, a clumsy but earnest and genuinely refreshing take on Americana, biomechanical cyberpunk aesthetics that are a dream for techno-fetishists, an inspired use of licensed music and famous actors.
Actually, I'd be hard pressed to classify Kojima's games pre-MGSV to be action games; they never were about killing lots of guys, but about tinkering with the environment and the AI in between the love-them-or-hate-them story segments; it's just that MGS V let you have your cake and eat it too and DS is decidedly lighter on the overt action once more.
It's been called a walking simulator and its systems certainly evoke say, Red Dead Redemption 2's survival-lite mechanics and its emphasis on a heavy, grounded avatar in Arthur. Only except here, ignoring your meters and the condition of your cargo and equipment has more serious consequences than just neglecting your horse or the state of your rifle in that other game. Like RDR2, there's a de-emphasis on a common, numbers-fed power curve like in action RPGs, which may frustrate many players used to getting better and better at killing things. But unlike RDR2, so far I haven't failed a mission because I didn't perform the exactly choreographed steps that were necessary to move things onwards, which is always a good thing. But further on in Episode 3 is where the game truly opens up and more gear and options become available to you. More crucially, that is where the asynchronous social aspects start to truly materialize, and they become a welcome layer to the game's depth.
I'm certainly glad it exists, and its world is compelling, with gameplay that challenges an ingrained perception of what an "action adventure" should be, which is a fancy way of saying delivering parcels isn't the most satisfying gameplay loop in the world, at least not in the traditional sense. It's a slow burn that is decidedly tedious, but somehow rewarding. We could do worse than greenlight a few more games like this.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 11, 2019Verified PurchaseI originally gave this one star due to my order missing the pre-order bonus content. After contacting customer service several times, they were able to help me get the bonus content.
As for the game, I'm loving it. It's so much more than a delivery man simulator, but I also loved the delivering aspect before the game was even released. There is a lot of depth and mystery to everything, and it's thrilling once you start diving deeper into it. The 'story' doesn't always make sense, and it gets a little pretentious at times, but the game always manages to pull me back in and make me feel a lot of emotions I wasn't expecting to experience. There are also a lot of different game play mechanics and other details in the game I find fascinating, but it's hard to go into them without spoiling things. It's a game best experienced on your own, spoiler free.
I can also see why it's a game some people would find hard to engage with. Especially if taking the time to deliver packages and make connections, doesn't catch your interest in the slightest.
But if you're on the fence about getting it, watch some of the early teaser trailers and maybe watch some short clips of game play footage. If any of that intrigues you and the idea of spending time delivering packages doesn't bother you, I think you will more than enjoy this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars A VERY story driven game
Verified PurchaseI've never played a game like this so heads up, it is very slow. There are brief moments of intense action, but the vast majority of this game is your character alone traveling the world delivering packages. A lot of that is on foot across varying terrain. The graphics are great and you can really feel alone out in the middle of no where.
There is a lot of narrative cut-scenes, as this is a story driven game. So just be warned, this is not fast paced unless you are in combat.
Only thing I wish they had included was the music player. It works in your room and at remote locations in the game a song will play. I really would have liked being able to listen to all the music I collected while I'm traveling. Listening to only my characters breathing and foot falls gets drab when I know I've got over 20 songs sitting on a music player I cannot use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this game
Verified PurchaseOut of all the games I have ever played. This game is my #1 game. Between deliveries to make, mules to defeat and BTs to go up against. This game is non stop. Definitely love Deathstranding
