"good beans deserve a good grind" For coffee lovers, good beans deserve a good grind. Quality of the grind is the most important step of the coffee/espresso making, to get that great taste of coffee. Many coffee lovers will say that the single most important piece of gear in coffee/espresso making is the grinder. You invest in a good grinder to have that same taste of coffee every single time! The Delonghi's machine is a "Burr" grinder, not a regular blade grinder. Burr grinder basically grinds a few beans at a time in between two revolving abrasive surfaces (Stainless Steel burrs) that gives you that uniform grind every time! The built of the machine is tall(roughly 15") and looks beautiful! It is designed and engineered in Italy but made in China. Delonghi's machine comes with -Clear operating instruction as shown in the pics -18 variable grind settings for espresso, drip coffee, pour over and french press, which ever you like it/prefer - Digital display for easy reading and setting -Adjustable strength settings - light, normal and strong -If you are into espresso, it comes with Porta filter that you can directly grind into (a single serve) -You will need to experiment a bit to find out the correct ratio of grind to number of cups(should not take long at all btw). But once you figure this out, it is easy. -The grind storage container is big enough to make probably 12-14 cups of coffee, depending on the strength you like of course. -Cleaning is easy- you can remove the upper burr to make it simple. This can be quite important for many :) If you are a coffee lover, a good burr grinder is must- don't invest in blade grinder. Machines like these are there to stay for years in your house, so a good investment, highly recommend it

    CONs: Spits coffee grinds everywhere. To over come this I put my hands around the ladel while it is grinding. Most grinders spit out grinds so I would not let this stop me from recommending.

    I am a huge fan of french press, and for the last 10 years I've used a $20 basic grinder for my beans, and occasionally my spices. I was eager to try a conical burr grinder after seeing one in action at a cafe.

    The learning curve is around a medium to get the grind and amount you want, but once you figure it out, it's smooth sailing. However, grinding coffee is messy business. I'm not a fan of how much there was to clean up after.

    PROS:
    - Looks lovely on your counter, holding your beans and waiting to fresh grind each morning before you brew
    - 12 different grind settings. 12! Even the most picky will find their ideal grit size. I photographed the results of 5 settings so people can see the differences.
    - Has an attachment to grind directly into your espresso tamper. When not in use, it has hidden storage.
    - Won't grind if the proper container isn't inserted
    - Container you grind into has a nice airtight seal, so you can pre-grind as needed.

    CONS:
    - A little on the messy side. Static/dry climates seems to be the enemy here.
    - If you put in too many beans and need to remove the hopper, you're going to have a bit of a spill

    Overall, this is a very powerful grinder with a lot of variety in settings. If you own an espresso machine, or just love coffee, this will be a handy tool.

    I bought this grinder to match my dedica espresso pump for my home setup. Unfortunately, I haven't been the most pleased with this grinder. It's unnecessarily digital. This machine loses all your programmed settings when there is a power interruption. The bean hopper does not close, so you cannot easily switch between coffees. Adding just the amount that you want to grind doesn't quite work either, because the less beans that are in the machine, the more inconsistent your grind size will be, as this (like most) is a gravity fed system.

    With the portafilter holder in it spits coffee all over the counter. It spreads coffee grinds everywhere for in a 2 foot circle in the front of the machine. Extremely messy. Also, this is not a hands free portafilter holder, it will vibrate out of place 10 times out of 10.

    The container provided feels very low quality plastic, and is prone to a lot of static buildup, even when common tricks are used, (like stirring the beans with a wet spoon handle). The top has a sort of threaded locking mechanism to close, but then you have to take the lid off to access the ground coffee, which seems silly to me.

    The finest grind setting is fine for a pressurized basket. The five finest settings produce reasonably uniform results, but after that, all bets are off and you can get wildly inconsistent grinds.

    Overall this machine is not suited for a coffee beginner as it is laden with all sorts of variables and settings which don't help you brew good coffee. Likewise it isn't suited for coffee nerd because it doesn't grind fine enough, nor consistent enough. It's visual appeal is not backed up by function. There are far, far better options around the same price as this.

    My boyfriend has been using the well-reviewed Capresso burr grinder for a number of years for making French press coffee and espresso drinks at home. He is a “gourmet” and has a “palate.” (I like to tease him, but I enjoy his cooking!) However, at nearly a decade old, his Capresso has gotten temperamental in behavior at some grind settings. He would voice mild complaints, but wasn’t planning to buy a replacement. Here was a great opportunity for a Christmas gift!

    After doing product research on 鶹 and reading user reviews, I chose the DeLonghi Dedica conical burr grinder. He liked it right away. With French press, he noted smoother flavor. Those who think that Starbucks over-roasts their coffee still may not like Starbucks beans(!), but should nevertheless find that this grinder removes harshness while still yielding full-bodied flavor. There is also less grounds sludge in the cup. Even the most coarse setting on the Capresso produced plenty of sludge. The sludge is an objection that many have against French press. This grinder could change their minds.

    The grinder has 18 grind settings, 6 each for Fine (1-6), Medium (7-12), and Coarse (13-18). It also has three “Strength” settings, which determines how heavy a grind goes into each cup. Thus a Light strength will produce fewer grams of coffee grounds, while the Medium and Full settings will grind more grams per cup. This allows fine-tuning for individual tastes, and is particularly important for proper timing of espresso shots. My boyfriend found he found he could go down to level 14 (a finer coarse setting) for French press, but that 13 produced too much sludge.

    My boyfriend has a lower-end semi-automatic DeLonghi espresso machine (EC 155). The Dedica has an attachment that accommodates the portafilters from DeLonghi espresso machines so that you can grind directly into the portafilter. This is a nice feature. However, the grinder automatically adjusts to grind only one cup of grounds with the attachment in place. Thus, if you are making a double shot, you will have to grind one cup, wait a second or two, and press the grind button a second time to fill the portafilter. However, the Strength setting still works with the portafilter attachment in place, so you can fine-tune how many grams of grounds per shot.

    Although the EC 155 claims to have a 15-bar pump, it nevertheless seems to be a weak pump. With too fine a grind, or too much pressure tamping the grounds, the machine takes too long to pull a shot. The Dedica grinder allows the fine-tuning necessary to pull a properly-timed shot, while extracting more flavor from the grounds. Although the DeLonghi EC 155 still won’t make as rich and full-bodied a coffee as something like a Gaggia or a professional-level machine, it is a notable improvement. As with the French press, there is also less sludge from the grounds when making espresso.

    A concern with a fancy machine like this, that has digital settings for most of its functions, is how robust the circuitry and buttons will prove over the long haul. My boyfriend had an initial reservation that the cost of a grinder like the Dedica was for all the bells and whistles, rather than for a better grinder. Indeed, being only a few weeks old, he hopes for the best in terms of the circuitry longevity.

    My boyfriend will be getting a hand-me-down Baby Gaggia from a good friend who has upgraded to a fairly high-end espresso machine. He suspects the Gaggia portafilter will be too large to work with the Dedica attachment. In the meantime, he has been making more espresso than before, and enjoying the DeLonghi EC 155 more than ever.

    Most people think about upgrading coffee machines while relegating a good grinder to a lower tier. For those wondering whether the Dedica grinder delivers a better cup of coffee at a semi-premium price, the answer is yes. Upgrading the grinder will have the benefit of appearing to upgrade one’s espresso machine at the same time. The better burr grinders heat the grounds less when grinding, and yield more even grounds size with less sludge. The Dedica delivers on both counts. My boyfriend doesn’t have enough experience with his friend’s even pricier Rancilio grinder to offer direct comparison, but he does note the Dedica is a well worthwhile upgrade over the crowded $80-$100 segment of burr grinders, and certainly worth the price premium.

    Perhaps I can post a follow-up in a year to see how the machine holds up. I am thinking of buying a Dedica myself because I enjoy playing with the settings and the ease of use with all those digital bells and whistles! After all, my boyfriend has been telling me those blade grinders, while better than nothing, leave much to be desired. I would merely be taking his advice...
