Finally, a set of bearing that fit my LA 145 front axle shafts. All the others were too small. The large washers are much thinner than the factory ones. One of the bearings housing chipped off when installing into the rim. Will have to see if I can get it replaced.
Bought this bearing kit thinking I had bushings on my lawn tractor. Turns out my John deere D170 had bearings already. I just used the washers in the kit to take up some play with the wheel spindle and put new caps on the ends. I'll just save the bearings for the future.
The bearings go in easy using a large socket over them to drive them in with a hammer. I had to use some emery cloth/ sandpaper to clean up the axle shaft as the bearings wouldn’t slip over the ridge left by the worn out bushings. The e-clip and washers are thicker than the original so would not install without some modification. As I had lost the washers and clip, which was the reason for buying this set in the first place, I had to grind the thickness of one of the washers down to allow the locking e-clip to slide into place. The yellow cover fit but is a bit flimsier than the original. It should serve the purpose to hold things in place as well as keep the dust out. All in all, it is not a direct fit but with a little modification which took all of 10 minutes it will work out fine.
I got these because I read that these were needed for the front axles on my John Deere lawn tractor. When I went to install them, I discovered that the front wheel axles already had bearings. I kept them anyway, spare parts.
Easy to install, will need to smooth the shaft out a bit with some 180 grit as the bearing would not slide right on because the shaft around where the snap ring goes has a tiny lip from wear or from when it was made. other then that they are working great so far. The Long term durability... dont know yet.
This was a perfect kit for my John Deere LA145 lawn tractor. I have been rehabbing this tractor for the past year, making upgrades and repairs. I bought a new set of front wheels with new tires to replace the dried out worn tires. The new ones came with the bushings in them, and upon reading repair stories I discovered that the bushings will wear the spindles over time. I ordered this kit, and installation was very easy. Drive out the bushings with a punch, and drive the new bearings in with a large socket. One tip I will share is to remove the inner seal of the bearing prior to installing them. The reason is that when you grease the bearing by way of the grease fitting, removing the inner seal allows the grease to get to the ball bearings. I did have to sand the spindle lightly with 100 grit sandpaper prior to installing the bearings into the wheel hub. Check the fit of the bearing slip fit over the spindle first to avoid problems. A light sanding smoothed out the spindle enough that the bearing slid right on as it would not fit prior to sanding it down.
Lost the left front bearing on my JD on Saturday, and this kit had me back up and running on Sunday. Excellent price. Easy and direct replacement for my LX176. The extra hardware for different applications is nice. My spindles only required 1 washer to take up play. I also reused my original snap rings as I prefer them, but the kit includes C-Clips if yours are missing. Yellow caps also fit nicely.
